its been ages since the release of the ps2 and it is still yet to go online

Had no idea the PS2 could be hooked up to the internet yet. Did the modem get released? I have\'nt seen it anywhere here, always hearing about next year for that and the hard drive. I\'m wondering if Sony is\'nt thinking about scrapping the HD for the PS2 and just including it for the PS3 since X-Box is the same price and already includes both plus enhanced graphics. Add-on accessories like that have never sold well, it needs to be a part of the system from the beginning to succeed I think.

In the past for the most part that is true Dlove but with so many people wanting to go online in the coming months with their PS2\'s I think they should sell quite well.
The PS2 has such a high userbase that if half the PS2\'s are equipped with modems or HD\'s it will still be a huge number of em.

The official Sony modem will be released early next year. But right now you get buy a 3rd party modem if you want to play THPS3 online. But remember, there are no garantees that a third party modem will work with any future games.

I think a better idea would be to drop the PS2 price to around $200, then sell a PS2 w/ HDD and Modem for $300. That way Sony will be matching the Xbox\'s price, but only the people who plan on going online will have to pay for it.
If they waited 3 or 4 years just to include the HDD in the PS3, the Xbox would get too big of a grip on the market. Sony needs to counteract Microsoft right now.

I can\'t see the future. And unless you are some kind of super chimp, you can\'t either. Why should Sony risk letting the Xbox become successful when they can kill it off right now?
I think that when Sony finally does drop the US price, they will drop it to $200 (which is why it\'s taking so long for them to drop it -- because it\'s such a huge drop). And I think that they will sell a PS2 w/ HDD and modem for $300 to match the Xbox. That would make buying a PS2 the obvious choice between the two, and at the same time, would kill the Xbox.

I aggree......when I went out on November 23 (the day after thanksgiving) there were still X-boxes on the floor at Best Buy...me thinks the X-box isnt selling very well.......Didnt see any GameCubes tho........

next holiday season will probably be the real big first threat to the ps2. If
they drop the price and sell a bundle like someone said then they should
good. Not to mention they will be the first to recieve the online only FFXI.
If FFXI sells as well as other FF\'s then that probably sets up more of a
modem and harddrive user base than any ad-on has ever seen.
My guess is there will also be some kind of bundle/promotion with FFXI for
those who already have PS2s. Oh, not to mention FFXI is supposedly
coming around next holiday season.

thats wat sega said when they released the dreamcast a year before all other systems in the hope that they could get a user base and get ahead of the other systems
but now look at it..
looks like the ps2 will go this way too
its only logical.. things always become outdated and new and better things come along thats just life...
like computers for example.. you cant keep ur crappy p133 forever.. it sucks get over it and get a new computer!!!

yea that may be but the difference between lets say the PS2 and DC is a lot more then PS2 and Xbox graphically for the most part - also the userbase of dc was not as large as DC - Sony also has much more money and better known reputation which sega sadly does not
so pretty much your P133 analogy is more like this - PS2 is to P133 as Xbox is to P300
you get a little more power out of it but there isnt enough to merit a upgrade just yet unless you need it for certain tasks

1: When we play online, we hook this up through our computers right? or is there going to be a way we can play on our televisions online?
2: PS2, is it 56k compatiable? will I be able to play FFXI on my 56k line? I don\'t care about lag but pleaaaaase tell me I can?

I think that you can just hook up the telephone cord right into the PS2 modem and play. No computer required. But If anyone wants to correct me on this, feel free to. I\'m not sure about the Broadband connections, because I really don\'t know exactly how those things work.

Yep. That is one advantage that the PS2 has over the Xbox in online gaming (actually, it\'s the ONLY advantage it has ;)). It might get a little laggy, but it will still be fun.

the ps2 has 15 million+ units in peoples homes and that number grows like a fungus everyday
dont get me wrong, the xbox is a dandy console and may help you feel secure at night, BUT its coming out a year late.

ps2 is a year early...
both game cube and xbox are out now
when ps2 chose to be out earlier..
so ps2 is a 4th gen console
whereas xbox and game cube are 5th gen consoles
as i see it sony should/will release the ps3 to compete with the xbox and gamecube
