Title: Progressive scan DVD for PS2?
Post by: DLove23 on November 26, 2001, 07:49:19 AM
I saw an article somewhere(can\'t remember where it was) that stated Sony would make the DVD capabilities of the PS2 progressive scan.  I know X-Box decided not to and I was disappointed in that since they do support it for games.  Seemed stupid to me.  I have both systems and wished at least one of them supported this feature because when I do end up going high end I don\'t want to have to buy a separate DVD player when I already have 2.  Any legit info would be greatly appreciated.

If you\'re going to go "high end" (which I assume means buying a display that can accept 480p signal, then you\'d be well advised to get a better DVD player than the PS2.  Even if they somehow add progressive video output in a future driver (which I think is unlikely), the PS2 has other shortcomings that would make it inferior to even the cheapest dedicated progressive players.  Too much edge enhancement, poor audio reproduction, and the noise from that damn cooling fan... to name a few.  Get the Sony DVP-NS700P if you want a good cheap progressive DVD player.

Thanx Coredweller.  What I meant by "high end" is when I end up getting a widescreen HDTV.  I currently have a 36 inch WEGA and am happy with it for now but would like to have a DVD player capable of displaying high resolution images on a high definition set when I get it.  I\'m not made of money so I would have appreciated one of my game systems with the DVD function to be capable of it.  Especially when one of them (X-Box) has the feature but only for games and not DVD playback.  I\'m not THAT picky, I don\'t need the best possible picture known to man but would like it to somewhat match the capabilities of the HD set.  For now I\'m sure I\'m fine though with either.

You can get progressive scan DVD players now for under 400 bucks.  Also a great way to do it is to hook your PC up to your HD set.  That\'s what most people do.  It looks fantastic.  I only do it on occassion.  I will hook my laptop up, but it looks great.
