Nintendo outsells the competition with GameCube launch
Nintendo sells over half-million GameCube consoles in its first week of availability.
Nintendo has announced that in its first week of availability more than half-million GameCube consoles were sold through to consumers. The company claims those sales numbers make the GameCube the fastest selling console in history--the PlayStation 2 sold its initial shipment of 500,000 units in less than a week, but Sony did not ship additional units for several weeks after launch. In terms of software sales, according to Nintendo, Luigi\'s Mansion became the fastest selling launch game, even surpassing the stellar sales of Nintendo\'s own Super Mario 64.
"To have outpaced any other video game console launch ever would be notable in its own right," said Peter Main, executive vice president for sales and marketing at Nintendo of America. "But to accomplish this under the current economic conditions is truly remarkable. There is a seemingly endless appetite for high quality, stay-at-home entertainment at an affordable price--which is a perfect definition of Nintendo GameCube."
Of the initial North American shipments of 740,000 hardware units, approximately 100,000 systems went to Canada and Latin America and another 75,000 to US rental and other distribution channels. Virtually all of the 565,000 units that were shipped to US retailers are sold out and a new shipment of 125,000 units is now arriving at retailers.
By the end of the year, the GameCube will have 22 games in its library. Nintendo will ship two of its high-profile first party games--Super Smash Bros. Melee and Pikmin--to retailers next week.
The PS2 sold 500,000 in its 1st day in the US, and close to 1 million its 1st day in Japan
Sony had shipments of new PS2\'s every week after initial US launch (average of 100,000 a week) and met its goal of over a million by years end
There are still GC\'s in my area and my local Software Etc and EB and both say the demand is no where\'s near that of Xbox for new systems
not that it really matters but its a lie none the less

OF course it is BS. You show me one company that doesn\'t lie out of their "teeth" to promote hype.
-
yep, PS2 in "coast" mode now
i see a clear sky, and smooth sailing
-
I wouldnt say its smooth sailing for the ps2 just yet. It will do well, but there is the threat of being over taken by the xbox. But thats not likely. But yes, its looking good for the ps2.
Even though the GC sold well, I dont think the future looks bright for it. There just doesnt seem to be much excitment about it
-
My BEst Buy:
XBox - sold out first day, have had 2 restock shipments in, the third tomorrow.
GC - sold out in 3 days, got our FIRST restock TODAY! I don\'t know what kind of BS they are trying to push, but I am gonna go out on a limb and say XBox has sold more total.
PS2 will have no problem with GC, like N64. XBox will be PS2\'s only nuisance this generation.

:)
-
Yes, the demand in my area is about the same. This is marketing hype.
-
Gamecube sold 500,000 in the first week........Playstation 2 sold 500,000 in less than 12 hours. Strange how they didn\'t mention sony\'s japanese launch witch did 980,000 in 24 hours. Nintendo are lairs.
-
If I were Nintendo, I would release a statement like that too.. It\'s all part of the marketing strategy.
-
Not that it means much but as long as we\'ve got people giving anecdotal evidence here, I\'ll share mine too. In a county with a population over 100,000 12 xboxs were sold out of the 72 in stock the first two days after launch, anyone living in the area would have to drive for at least another hour to get one at the next closet store. Didn\'t ask about GC because I could see there were at least 20 still packed on the shelves the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and I\'m not that curious about how well it\'s doing. As expected, neither of the two were in stock by the next time I checked, Sunday. Keep in mind at least twice as many GCs were available at launch as there were xboxs so selling more units overall is not so hard to believe. As of yesterday the xbox cubby was full and the GC section was empty. I\'m not sure that says a whole lot but there it is anyway.
Contrast the above with never having seen a PS2 on the shelves for a full six months after the US launch, though I checked regularly, and the fact that in March they were still being sold at online auctions like U-Bid for double the retail value and you\'ve got to get the idea there is no comparison.
Just maybe the momentum for the xbox will build slowly as word of mouth spreads and more must have ‘xbox only\' titles hit the streets but I honestly don\'t see it ever happening in a big way, those crappy kiosks sure aren\'t showing anything to go wow about at the moment. Nintendo is a distinctly separate market and there seem to be too many loyal N nuts out there for GC to fail at being a hit, in North America at least. Even I\'m interested in a few of their games all though I don\'t really care for Nintendo.
One thing for sure is both consoles have a lot of catching up to do.
-
I find it very sad, that a well respected company that has been in the business for years has to go down to that deep level and say that their console is the fastest selling in history while it doesn\'t even come close. :( I find it especially sad, since everyone who reads a bit of newspaper and remembers back when PS2 was sold knows that it\'s a big lie.
-
I sure do love the Toy Story 2 quality graphics on my PS2. Whoo boy, it sure is swell.
-
Rast, every system has lied about it\'s launch......... and vulcan x-box doesnt have a chance to catch up to ps2! It doesnt have the stuff! Its gotten bad reveiws for most of it\'s games and didnt sell nearly as many x-boxes at launch then ps2 did. Ps2 has better upcoming games as well.
-
The xbox didnt sell nearly as many as the ps2 cause they didnt ship nearly as many. And Halo, DOA3 and a few others have got pretty good reviews. Especially Halo. The ps2 only had one game at launch that was getting good reviews
-
not to mention, the xbox and gamecube didnt sell out at launch
noone near the frenzy that occured a year ealier

Maybe it is the fastest selling (in a week). Anybody who reads the newspaper knows that Nintendo is the fastest selling (yes it is in tech news all over the place). Come on just because Nintendo possilbly beat Sony at something you guys put it as BS. It\'s not just you. Nintendo fans do it. Xbox fans do it. Believe what you want but you\'ve gotta except defeat.

I remember the remark, but am not sure who said this. However, I do know what Sony writes in their official PR\'s and this is a quote out of it when they introduced the specs of the PS2:
With this large drawing capability, it is possible to render a movie-quality
image. (Refering to the 75 Mio. Pps number and 150 Mio. particle drawing rate).
IMHO, MGS2 beats Toy Story graphics in many ways. Detail, atmosphere and weather effects. While the graphics on PS2 might not be as clean, they sure look more appealing IMHO.
Another thing to note is that I don\'t think Sony lied about something that silly that everyone with a bit of memory can prove wrong just like that.
-
"Employees at all of Sony\'s competitors at one time or another have told Next Generation editors they believe Sony\'s performance benchmarks are unrealistic or inflated."
-Next-Gen
Maybe Sony feels this way about Nintendo\'s numbers. We\'ll wait and see if they say anything.

Nintendo did not beat PS2 in anything. Who sold out in the first day and who didn\'t? Nintendo is just finishing up selling their first shipment. Nintendo fanboys just won\'t accept that Nintendo will be defeated by Sony.
-
I thought this issue would be brought up, but I don\'t see how they can go wrong. You throw in as much polygones as possible on screen and have a look how fast the GS can render them. I guess at 75 Mio. pps was the limit. Sony stated that the data is messured. Do I trust these numbers?
Yes. Current games are pushing way over the 10 Mio. pps mark. Outcast appearently pushes 18 Mio. pps! Burnout comes in with 13 Mio. pps. These are numbers that have been stated by Sony (20 with most effects on, not considering in-game calculations) to be achievable. The other thing that is interesting, is that the EE has two sets of VU\'s. While one is for 3d geometry calculations, the other one can be used to perform AI calculations independendly. If this is true, then the drawing rate of the polygons aren\'t involved and you can expect PS2 games to reach 20 and more million pps. It will be interesting what the next generation of games will be pushing. :)
-
The PS2 is really powerful and I\'m sure it can go into the 20mpps range.
I\'m just trying to prove that everycompany stretches numbers every now and then.
I still sceptical at Nintendo\'s numbers.

I think it\'s the other way around. Not like this whole thing matters anyway (I am arguing for the sake of arguing, we do need something to talk about don\'t we?). Sony \'fanboys\' can\'t accept the fact that Nintendo may have beat the PS2 in launch.
-
ok, lets theoretically day that nintendo "might have" beat sony\'s numbers at launch
do you really think the GC can match the PS\'s installed user base?
-
nope.

Bullsh it
Nintendo didn\'t come close
980,000 in one day in japan
500,000 in one day US
They might have squeeked out the 1 week US record but Nintendo owns nothing
Its even funnier that Nintendo fans can\'t admit the fact when the data is so obvious
now prove to me that the Lamepube is the fastest selling console in comparison to the above PS2 numbers
-
Yup PS2 kicked ass in Japan. I don\'t think gamecube sold the fastest here. The media says so but this is the media we\'re talking about.
-
The PS2 sold 500,000 in one day/week
The Game cube sold 700,000 in a week
How is that not selling more in the first week?

Keep telling yourself that. I could see if Toy Story was shown in real-time; but the fact of the matter is that it was pre-rendered months in advance with better models/textures/lighting. Had they put in the same weather effects as MGS2 they would have had better weather.
-
Okay....
First off, lets say that Nintendo sold out 700,000 units in the first week. If so, then that would make the GC the fastest selling console. Lets not confuse this with the fastest selling console in one single day . This is totally different. That would mean, that GC sold 300,000 more than Sony did the first week, due to the fact Sony could only ship 500,000 the first week of the PS2 launch. Make sense? Thought so. You will note that I ignored Xbox sales, because to my knowledge, MS has not released anything saying how many units they sold in the first week (300,000 I suppose). You can also argue that the selling point for the mass PS2 sell-out in Japan was simply because the PS2 was a cheap DVD player for the Japanese market. Does it matter? NO. I am just saying, you can go in circles over this whole matter for along time. IN the end, each console sold an impressive amount.
Second off, does it really even matter? Before everyone starts screaming that Nintendo is "liars", think about it for a second...What company has not lied to increase media hype? As Gohan has already pointed out Sony kept goin\' on about "toy story quality graphics" and I even remember some George Lucas media hype...
I don\'t see why so many of you are concerned with what company Y sold and if Company X sold more than company Y.
MM said it best once again..

-For those of you saying PS2 sold 980,000 in one day in Japan could we please have links to respectable new sources? Don\'t get me wrong, I\'m getting a PS2 this Christmas, I\'ve already got a Dreamcast and will get the Gamecube this summer. But you Sony fanboys really piss me off.

No the words of someone who honestly cannot stomach Nintendo. It will always has been and always will be Lamepube to me.
Plus I actually enjoy calling it the Lamepube, it fits. Its not like we don\'t hear Gaystation often or suX-Box now is it

LMAO
look who\'s telling who to get a life. A person who joined a forum cause my rant. How much more lamer is that. You put in all that effort to sign up to tell me this
and go check it out for yourself it is fact and I\'ll be damn if I\'m actually going to search news archives to get you the news.
As for Sony Fanboys I am a huge Sony fan, but I also like the DC somewhat and will be geting an Xbox .I just really dislike Nintendo, but if it was Sega or MS proclaiming the same false hoods I wouldn\'t hesitate to point them out
It is a videogame console but this is a debate forum where crap like this gets posted so deal with it
-
Toy Story is less impressive than MGS? Surely you jest.
That\'s all I\'m going to say about that.
-
I didn\'t join PS2 Central because of your rant. Jeez your stuck up on yourself aren\'t ya?
-By the way gents the Gamecube IS the fastest selling system....in North America...:D So Nintendo told a white lie..
-
But you Sony fanboys really piss me off.
ya ever try going outside for a bit?
-
To call the PlayStation 2\'s launch anything but a success would be to severely discredit Sony\'s development and marketing teams, as well as anyone else directly involved with the system\'s launch. Japanese gamers are known for lining up outside their favorite Akihabara-region electronics store in anticipation of a new game release, but the demand (and the lines) for the PlayStation 2 surpassed all expectations. The system sold approximately one million units in its first weekend of release. These staggering sales figures, as well as the potential of such a powerful and versatile machine, caught the attention of even the mainstream American press. Newspapers and television news shows around the world began to run stories about the incredible new device that Sony had unleashed on Japan, and so the hype began to build abroad.

Obviously ya did
You read what was written you joined up and made your 1st post a reply to my rant
and stick up for myself ????????
what was that all about. I\'m just posting facts, and yes Nintendo has the fastest selling system in NA after a week, but that is not what the articles around the net are saying and that is all I have been doing was pointing out the fact.
and to be honest I\'m surprised that the it is selling this well, but figuring all the diehard N fans and gamers who just have to have it at launch and its $200 price tag its understandable
-
I am personally not surprised by the huge amount of units sold durin\' the first week. There is one thing you all are overlooking and that is this is the holiday season and videogames are more popular than ever. You mix that with the fact Nintendo is a big brand name and a $200 dollar price tag, making it the cheapest next generation console and of course it is going to be a fast selling console.
BY the way Ddaryl, I don\'t even remember the last time I saw someone say "Gaystation" or "sux-box" around here...
Oh and you\'re right, I should get some special award, MM..;) How about my own chimp? :D
Thanks for the..err..spam, Ryu!

-I said stuck up on yourself:D. But again I didn\'t come to PS2 Central because of your rant. Was looking through the boards seeing if I wanted to join, read a few post...(including yours) and decided to join. Another reason is I\'m getting a PS2 for X-Mas. If I joined up just because of your rant then I would have left after replying, but I didn\'t. I plan on being on the boards for a long time.

Hold up... so this whole argument is about about who sold the most consoles in the first week, and people are trying to say Nintnedo is the fastest sellin console ever. I\'m deeply suprised alot of people didn\'t pick up on this. Nintnedo has a long history of twisting the truth to serve their needs. While they don\'t often outright LIE.. they aren\'t honest either.. not by a long shot.
Sony sold out of their entire stock of PS2\'s in one day. HAD there been say... a million at the initial launch, you could arguably say those would have sold out the same day also. Nintendo only won the "Fastest in a week" award because Sony didn\'t have the supply to meet demand. Clearly, the console with the most demand this generation has been the PS2. Nintnedo\'s "Record" will always live in the shadow of Sony\'s hardware production problems.
Anyone remember when Nintnedo claimed that their console had the largest userbase EVER? Letting people assume that they meant the N64 when in the fine print you can see they were talking about their handheld Gameboy. Or that little comment about shifting their entirety of their focus to portables. Everyone assumed they were dropping most of their support for the Dolphin, but then whala! A lil tiny GameCube... with a handle.
People need to learn how to read between the lines when they\'re talking about anything Nintnedo "Offically" says.
-
Is it me, or did this hype die extremely fast?
I remember the X-box\'s and Gamecubes launch day was crazy, and then a few days after that, now everything seems normal.
Like someone said in an earlier post, nothing but smooth-sailing. Sony without question will win the "Christmas War"
-
I wanted to buy an xbox for my brother for christmas. I called Toy R\' Us in my area and they said of the third shipment, two are left and he wouldn\'t hold one for me because they are in high demand. Needless to say, when I got there 45 minutes later both systems were gone. They had half a dozen GCs there (shipment #2 I\'m told) and they too are in high demand. I actually watched one get sold.
So I would say it\'s just you.
N and MS are going to sell every system they ship this year, just because you say the hype is dying down doesn\'t make it so.
This paranoia is senseless. The PS2 is not threatened by these new systems. The userbase is there and so will the games. Open your minds and accept that the new systems might actually be good and desired by others. Even if both new systems out pace PS2, the PS2 will not be abandoned by devs because there is too much money to be made.
So please, stop all this fanboyism.

WORD.
That is what I was saying back in the Summer when we were making predictions of this Christmas\' console sales. I said that the Xbox and NGC will sell out no matter what, and the PS2 will still sell more overall (because of the availability). The demand is VERY high right now for all next gen consoles, and this won\'t change until after Christmas.
