Hehe, I always have the best written titles don\'t I?
Well, I was looking in a Dell magazine, and saw one for $1800+ and I didn\'t find it to be that good. I think it was 1.9GHz, 40GB HD, 256RAM, 64MB Geforce 2 MX, DVD and CDRW with Windows XP. I went online to the Gateway site and customized my own PC with 1.8GHz, 256RAM, 40GB HD, 64MB GeForce3 Ti 500, CDRW and Wiindows XP for $2000. Grr...anyone know how to find a nice PC that I can get with a GF3, at least 256RAM and at least 1.8Ghz? A gaming PC would be nice, but I don\'t know any of those PCs names, other than alienware.

My general advice:
AMD XP over Intel.
Make sure (if you get AMD) you get PC2100 DDR ram (Twice as fast as pc133)
IF you do get PC2100 DDR (Double Data Rate) ram, get a Video card with DDR ram also, otherwise you bottleneck the ram anyway.
Of course you\'ll pay through the nose, unless you buy the componets and build it yourself. Mine cost $750 for all but the CD and DVD
NOTE: I am BIAS:)
Me got\'s Athalon XP1600 with 512Mb PC2100:)
-
"a fool and his money are soon parted"
that refers to ANYONE who spends 2000 on a PC, especially one from gateway
you can get a top of the line athlon 1900 XP with 256 DDR ram system with a Geforce 3 for less than 1100$ USD, INCLUDING monitor
like so:
* $313 - Athlon XP 1900 with cpu, fan
* $61 - PC2700 DDR 256MB
* $157 - GeForce3 TI 200
* $116 - 19inch monitor
* $90 - DVD/CDRW
* $31 - Sound Blaster Live Value
* $34 - Altec Lansing IBM345
* $100 - case and 350w power supply
* $25 - NIC
* $60 - mouse and keyboard
* $100 - operating system [free if u use linux :)]
--------------------------------------------------
$1087
if u pay $2000, or even $1500 for a similar OR LESS computer!
i mock thee!
-
Pay attention to the motherboard chipset your getting. You don\'t want to get stuck with a bad chipset.
-
Well MM, where would I get all this stuff for that cheap? And a motherboard. And harddrive. Where should i get all this stuff if i decide to get what you said.
-
try http://www.pricewatch.com
thats where i got those prices
build yer own PC, dont buy one made with cheap [overpriced] parts
-
DO NOT get a GATEWAY!!!!!! they are CRAP!...I wish I could have sent mine back.........
:hat:ScottyJ:hat:
-
in my opinion the only great pcs are the ones you make yourself
heck my pc has a lifetime gaurentee and lifetime technical support - yea its pretty cool ;)
-
I\'d get the Dell... but thats just me. ;)

man i couldnt agree with you more ive got a 2.0 ghz with 256 pc800 ram thats works worse than my 450mhz with 128mb ram
lukly i got a gforce three a 19 inch monitor and a scanner with my new one

Dell makes good machines. I\'ve had 3 and their service is good, too. Gateway is so-so.
Basically you can go either Intel or AMD. Some points for- Intel- If you get an Intel machine get a Pentium 4. Everything below that is over-priced and under-powered. Do not settle for a PC133 motherboard. It\'s RDRAM or nothing for Intel. Trust me, the performance will soooo suck.
- AMD - Current king of the hill in performance and always in price. Make sure you get a motherboard that supports DDR Ram up to 266mhz and you\'re good to go. AMD processors run at a higher temperature than Intel\'s. If you buy pre-built, make sure the service and warranty are good from whomever you get it from.

I dont know much about pc\'s, but I do know what Rob said...follow his advice!

Okey day. I don\'t know if I\'m smart enough to choose parts that are compatible with each other to build my own PC. I have a Gateway right now, and want to get a Dell. Would I be safe going with Dell?
-
Yes; just make sure you get a machine with RDRAM
-
Question for MM....
Can i take the PC i got now, which is a 1.4ghz amd, and just replace the motherboard, and CPU??? with that XP chip???
-
of course you can
swapping a mobo is very, very easy
they will be the exact same size
-
What if i wanted a gaming PC? Whats the best one? I only remember the name of Alienware, so I don\'t know who else to look at. Customized Computer (http://www.alienware.com/main/configurator_pages/area51.asp?SaveQuote=scrwdup21@hotmail.com) from Alienware.
-
The nature of PC gaming requires you to have a decent to high-end graphics card. Those can get expensive if you buy them pre-installed. You will get it cheaper if you buy an AMD system vs. Intel.
-
I don\'t like AMD cpus.. We don\'t give warrenty\'s on them. Only the manufacture warrenty. Reason why, THEY FRY. Yep u leave the sink off or it comes off. Say BYE BYE to your cpu and the motherboard.
Intel cpus don\'t fry, they just crash your comp or slowdown. Then u can fix the problem. Although Amd cpus are faster then Intels and cheaper.. They have that little problem. Which isn\'t so little.
But get whatever u can for the cash u have. Get the best of what u can afford. That\'s my rule. :)
Here\'s a movie that shows what happens to AMD and Intel cpus if the sink was to come off.

I build pc\'s so I will offer some advice. Don\'t get the Pentium 4. The new Athlon XP 1.5 GHZ will run the same as the P4 2.0 GHZ. AMD is better for gaming while the P4 is for audio/video. Get at leat 384 MD DDR(preferrably) because most new games already require 256MB. Definitely Geforce 3 or ATI Radeon 8500. Make sure the hard drive is a 7200 RPM ATA-100. Make sure the board in the system runs @ >200 MHZ and is RAID ready. With this combination, you should score a 6000 in the 3D Mark2001 test. (madonion.com). If you look around, you can find this system for less than $2200. If you want a super powerhouse, check out the line of Falcon southwest Mach V. PM me if you need anymore guidance.

All CPUs, including Intel\'s, fry when their temp threshhold is exceeded. It is possible with newer motherboards to monitor your CPU temperature and shut the computer off or reboot when it hits a certain temperature.

who told u this dood. I SELL pcs. Intels cpus that run on mb normaly slow down the computer why? Because there\'s LESS POWER being put though the cpu to STOP the cpu frying.. That\'s what the Thermal Diode is for. It\'s designed to tell the MB that the CPU is getting to hot and to stop putting power into it.. Just enough so u can shut off what your doing and turn the machine off.
I\'ve yet to see a Fryed Intel cpu. I\'ve seen heaps of amd cpus come back fryed.
Maybe intel used to have cpus that fry.. But once they got set up so they don\'t allow power through the cpu. (P3, P4, etc) It stopped. Amd mb don\'t have a thermal diode. Why, I do not know. Maybe AMD couldn\'t give a rats arse if the cpu fryed. Off course any cpu can fry if they get too hot.. But INTEL cpus don\'t allow themselfs to get that hot.
Again.. The vid.

Watch THEM BURNNNNNNN!!!!!!!.

I don\'t know why AMD won\'t use thermal diode. Probably to keep costs down or something. I\'ve heard it\'s real easy to crush the core of the Athlon and I was careful putting mine on and had no problem, but if -____- is buying a pre-built system, he won\'t run into this problem. However, I haven\'t heard of anyone refusing to put a warranty on one of their AMD machines. Where do you work?
-
AMD doesn\'t include an heatspreader like Intel does to keep the cost down.
Also, if the CPU over heats the system crashes, most people don\'t leave their computers on when it crashes so the risk of the core actually melting isn\'t that great. But when it comes to the older Tbirds, if you start with out a heatsink or one that hasn\'t been properly seated the core will melt with in 8 seconds. The AthlonXP (based on the Palomino core) deals with heating a llot better than the Tbird\'s.
There was a video where some guy played a game of Q3A on a Palomino (AMD) based system using passive cooling only. It ran fine. Ofcourse I don\'t reccomend this since it is a fact that Athon\'s get hotter. Due largely to the fact that there is a large transistor count running at a very high clock speed.
EmperorRob, it\'s true that it\'s easly to crush the core of a Tbird, since AMD doesn\'tinclude an heatspreaded, and leaves the core naked.

Puh.. That vid really scared me Soul..
Hmm.. BTW, nO-One: Which motherboard do you think is the best?
I was thinking about a Asus :)
-
Abit KT-7 or the new Epox. Just make sure it iaccepts DDR Ram
-
Abit is always a good choice if you know what you\'r doing, and be ready for some defect since they aren\'t known for the best quality control.
I know the Epox board has gotten good reviews, so have msi boards.
I haven\'t kept close taps on the mobo things lately since it\'s all become darned complex, the via kt266 chipset is supposed to be very good, the nForce is nowhere to be seen and hasn\'t been the super king of all benchmarks that it was supposed to have been. And now a new AMD chipset is arriving.
-
The 266A chipset is great as long as the chip is not the via. Via has many conflicts with nvidia(hence the reason I have a playstation2 instead of a pc now).
-
YES YES YES! NO! Damn u VIA!
I got an FIC mobo that runs great except for the 686B - ATA100 - Win2k problem. VIA needs to get off their butts and stop eating that Taiwanese pizza and do some work.

I work at CHnC.. Computer Help and Networking Central. It\'s my brothers buiness. We do have a 1 year warrenty for the CPUs.. But it\'s void if the CPUs overheats and frys.. or is overclocked. If the cpu doesn\'t work or just stops working without being fryed. Then we will replace it. AMD don\'t even allow a warrenty if it frys.
-
DO NOT, I SAY NOT BUY A DELL MACHINE
I have a p4 1.3ghz, 256mb RD pc800 ram, geforce 2 GTS, 60gb HDD and an extra 40gig HDD and it gets a 3dmark of 450 and thats runninh on win ME
buy AMD, buy Nvidia thats all I have to say
and be sure to get a beefy PSU to power your CPU and Video card

I forgot you live in Australia, don\'t you? If you don\'t use AMD approved heatsinks and motherboards or overclock your chip, they will not replace your CPU; that\'s the terms of their warranty. Also if you buy retail cpu\'s, AMD\'s warranty is for 3 years.
MGR, your problem is not Dell, it\'s Microsoft. The only thing ME is good for is maybe a flashy Christmas tree ornament.
