Title: I need help picking out a CD Burner.
Post by: Proud To Be on December 10, 2001, 09:04:22 PM
Im getting pissed. I told my my mother, which told my rich grandma to get me a CD Burner for christmas.

Well, we go to Best Buy and check out all the CD Burners they have there. The cheapest one was $199, which I had no problems with what-so-ever, I consider it kinda cheap to say the least, but my rich ****in grandma does. wtf.

So Im stuck, where can I find a cheap, good quality CD Burner?

God it makes me sick saying that.

I usually just buy from people with alot of positive feedback. Thats what I do and I\'ve never been burned

A coaster is a bad cd, which some burners tend to do. The VeloCD has a feature called burn-proof..makes sure you will never make a bad cd.

Just get any burner with burn-proof technology (or something like it). Then you should be OK. Good brands include Plextor, HP, Yamaha etc. But they\'re prolly not the cheapest. Just remember the key word: Burn-Proof™

burning CD\'s is BAD !

Because they are Plastic and you will release pollutants into the atmosphere like Phenanthrene which is a PAH

Facts about PAH\'s
PAH Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (basically 3 benzene rings joined together)

Known Carcinogen and can prove to be highly dangerous of ingested within the human body (Inhaled or ingested)

Can breakdown into other forms of PAH’s like Benzene (also known carcinogen)

Can combine with others to form fare more dangerous forms like Benzo [a] pyrene

oh and Benzo [a] pyrene unzipps your DNA

oh you mean burin CD\'s as in making them and not just setting them alight with petrol ?

D\'OH

Mitsumi has never steered me wrong.

You\'re best bet is honestly getting one OEM or even retail from a site that adverts on http://www.pricewatch.com

but you\'ll probably find a good one at http://www.newegg.com as well.

If you have to buy in person, try CompUSA.  They have a better selection than the 14 Yamaha drives Best Buy keeps in stock.

Well, I currently have a SCSI Yamaha CRW2100SX... It\'s unbelievable, it supports just about every reading and writing method, cd text, etc.  Not to mention the 16/10/40 speed, which is nice, cause I like burning in 4.5 minutes...

Only thing is, This one costs over $1000 Canadian - but I\'ve not steered you wrong.  The non SCSI version will probably cost a bundle less, and if it\'s still to expensive, my older Yamaha (4/4/16), which must noawadays cost a lot less was still super reliable and efficient, if slower.  I\'d reccomend any of the yamaha series, they\'ve served my family well (Between my dad and me, we\'ve owned 6).
