Title: Forget SSB, go buy Pikmin
Post by: Eiksirf on December 11, 2001, 09:09:03 PM
I bought both and Pikmin is way more fun for me.

I was curious if anyone else here actually has it?  I\'m about 3/4 through the game.  I\'ve been clearing up all the stuff I missed before I go after the next level...  It intimidates me. :)

Anyway, it\'s really fun.  You can explore and try stuff and if you aren\'t happy, you can start the day over.  It\'s totally nonlinear, and it has tons of replay value...

Actually, I wrote a review if you want to read it at http://www.ngenres.com/puzzles/index.html

So let me know what you think of Pikmin.  And if you don\'t know what you think yet, I\'ll give you a hint: you like it.

I was helping my friend choose what GC games he should get and we picked up SSB, Rogue Leader (his choice, and we had to decide either Pikmin or Super Monkey Ball.

And of course we got...

Super Monkey Ball.

Yea I have that, too.  Super Monkey Ball is worth it, plus it has multiplayer unlike Pikmin.

He should definitely get Pikmin though, IMO anyway.

I liked both Pikmin and SMB more than Rogue Leader.  I didn\'t care for the first one, either, so I guess it\'s just not my type of game...  It\'s decent anyway.

We\'re gonna rent Pikmin this christmas break though. I like new games with new themes.

Then you might also rent Luigi\'s Mansion.  It was fun, but with other, better games, there wasn\'t much incentive to go back after beating it.

I\'m asking for this one for christmas.  I read your review, but I feel that multiplayer aspects should definitely be added.  There are lots of options I can think of that would make the game much more grand in scope with the additon of a few multiplayer extras.  Anyways, great review, very simple, yet stylish.

They\'re not ants, they\'re tiny tella tubbies!

Which doesn\'t bother me at all, though I should find the very idea disturbing. Anyway, everything I\'ve read about Pikmin makes it sound pretty darn interesting and visually it looks delightful as well as impressive. Glad to hear N fans are getting a kick out of it!

They tried to make them big breasted women to appeal to gamers like you, but the polygon count slowed the game down. ;]

I want to play a game where I can blow stuff up and shoot people.  If they made a platformer where you get to control James Woods running through levels blowing the crap out of vampires, then I might buy it.  :D

I don’t see how older gamers can enjoy commanding “teletubies with flowers on the head " and monkey ball well I guess it looks pretty good and probably quite a challenge since your controlling the platform but give me GTA 3 and THPS3 any day.

And I don\'t see how some people haven\'t gotten sick of the FPS genre yet. I got my fill ending with the first edition if Quake. Granted I went through a long stream of similar games up to that point but they finally lost their appeal for me. Now bring on an updated version of Heretic and I\'m there...

Missing elements of most shooters that a game like Pikmin seems to have in spades are imagination and innocence. Probably there are more but both get to the essential divisions between the two. You can burn out on the blowemup bloodnguts rush. If you don\'t fear the stigma attached to playing games meant to delight both young and old there\'s plenty of enjoyment to be had there as well.

There\'s a little thing called gameplay.  It comes from the actual event of playing games.  You would realize why people liked these things if you actually played the games.

And mm, I tried in vain to find a picture of a Pikmin where I could edit it to have a big butt and impress you, but those things barely have bodies, so it was harder to do than I thought.

No offense, but before you bash at least give things a chance. SSBM is mindless fun and Pikmin is NOTHIHG like Pokemon for christ sake. Pokemon was an RPG and PIkmin is a puzzle / strategy title. Big difference.
