I just recently found this board, and I havent ever been able to find anyone who had Xband. I hope I just have!! Anyway, I used to play NHL96/97 all the time, I was ranked #1 in the nation for a while. My name on there was Eagle-Eye CuZ. Anyone remember me?
Edit: I thought I would throw out a few things that I remembered: A club on there called MWP. Some names like SkoalmanMWP, skinnypuppies, Cpt. Video.... I hope I don\'t sound crazy to you guys. :)

actually, Ive never heard of it.

Luckee is everywhere! lol. Well Xband was a modem that went into the Genesis so you could play people anywhere in the country through the phone lines.
-
ok..I vaguely remember the online sega thing, but wasnt it segacd or saturn?
-
I don\'t know if they had it for those systems too, but the one I had was for Genesis, It went down hill when PS1 came out because everyone kinda stopped playing Genesis.
-
Oh god.. there were 2 or 3 Genesis modems if I remember right. One that was released soon after the genesis which would allow you to dial up a friends house and play.. but it never got supported and probably died before it made it off the production floor.
There was a modem -TYPE- device that you could hook to the Genesis and download games and demos thru the Sega Channel if you had cable. That never came to my area, and I live in the country so I never even had cable until the whole minidish craze got started.
The Xband was a 3rd party device I think.. and they made one for both the Genesis and the SNES. I\'ve seen them at McVans videogame trader but never felt inspired to pick one up since barely anyone in my calling area has a genesis still, let alone the modem for it. I wouldn\'t even know what games were compatable with it. And no, luckee, it was for the Sega Genesis.. although they might have also made SegaCD and Sega32X games for it as well.
The later models of the Saturn had a modem included, and also a keyboard if I\'m not mistaken. Even though DC will probably be seen as the main forerunner of Online consoles, Saturn was actually the first Internet capable/ready console.
You might talk to the resident Sega freak here, DJRazzyFantastic, or AlteredBeast as most people know him. If anyone on these boards would have one, it\'s him.

I remember the Xband. Hard to forget those ads in the vg mags with this,"You never know who, or what you\'ll be playing." Then it had a pic of some freak of nature playing away on his SNES or Genesis.
I really wanted to pick one up, at the idea of playing some decent SSF2 competition, but from what I read it really benefiited for local players. Not for playing someone half way across the country.
Congrats on your ranking shovel. It\'s such a shame that online play for consoles is still not in the near future. I wanna play you fools is some games rather than talk about em. :) Well, still fun either way.

It is for me. I\'ll be on PSO in about 30 minuites, followed up by a few rounds of gettin lagged an fragged in Q]|[. :D

I no longer have it for genesis, in fact I think Xband went out of business. When I first got it I thought I was good but man there were some really good players out there, It took me a long time to get to #1. I had over 700 wins :) There were a lot of people with it too, I never had a problem hooking up w/ someone. It would search local first. After each game you could chat with your opponent, and you could even pick up the phone and talk for free. It even had its own version of Email called Xmail. It was really fun.

this sega thing sounds cool, i can rember seeing sega pirate tv adverts, but unfortunately never saw it

I doubt this was released in England. Speaking of rare hardware I seen a Sega Nomad on ebay the other day. Its a hand held Sega Genesis, or as us English call it the Megadrive. :)
It looked classy.

Smartass. :nut:
(Phantasy Star Online and Quake III for Dreamcast: Too bad there really ARE people out there who have no clue that the DC is online, and won\'t even know these games existed on console till they hit some other next-gen system) :(
