Sony Corp.\'s year-old PlayStation 2 is leading the multibillion-dollar video game console race, followed closely by Microsoft Corp.\'s Xbox and Nintendo Co.\'s GameCube, according to a report released Monday by Credit Suisse First Boston.
Sony sold 962,000 PlayStation 2 consoles between Nov. 11 and Dec. 8, according to CSFB estimates based on figures compiled by research firm NPDFunworld. Microsoft, which launched Xbox on Nov. 15, sold 934,000 consoles. The GameCube, introduced Nov. 18, sold 602,000.
In the last few weeks, each company at separate times claimed to have the best console launch ever, using their own sales figures. Monday\'s report by CSFB represents the first independent evaluation of sales data. The report shows that although Xbox and GameCube have garnered the lion\'s share of media attention, PlayStation 2 outsold its rivals, primarily because it had the inventory to meet demand, while Xbox and GameCube were limited by production constraints that delayed both launches.
"The bulk of the revenue for this category is still driven by Sony\'s PS2," said Sean Milne, vice president of research firm Soundview Technology Group in San Francisco.
Nintendo expressed optimism over the figures. "We are ecstatic," said Beth Llewelyn, a Nintendo spokeswoman. "We\'ve sold over 800,000 GameCubes in the U.S. to date, and we will ship 1.3 million units by Christmas."
Microsoft spokesman David Hufford said, "Xbox has caught fire since launch."
Analysts cautioned, however, that the contest is not so much a sprint but a costly, five-year marathon, and the winner may not necessarily be the fastest one out of the gate.
The fervor over short-term bragging rights eclipsed a larger trend--that video games as a whole have taken off, injecting billions of dollars into a soft retail environment.
Spurred by aggressive marketing campaigns that have plastered video game ads on everything from soda cans to late-night TV, sales of consoles, software and peripherals will surge 36% to $6.4 billion this year, according to estimates released Monday by NPDFunworld, a market research firm in Port Washington, N.Y.
"It\'s additional proof that even in this economic environment, our brand of entertainment is resonating with consumers," said Sony spokeswoman Molly Smith.

nice to see xbox there
but I still fear its future here in europe.
Nintendo needs to get its head of its arse and realise that they shouldn\'t use the same damn marketing as they always used to

they are ignorant and dont care what we (the gamers) think, they even rejected square once again. I think that the current nintendo president needs to leave. He spoils what would otherwise be a great game company

Yes..........:) :) :)

Thnx for the article ras, this bodes very well for all three consoles, and very impressive for MS. I actually would have thought Xbox sells would be a lot slower at the start and then maybe build momentum as time goes by since this is their very first console. This is very interesting indeed when one considers that the best is yet to come for the Xbox.

So true Biz, actually among the realists of us the Xbox may be exceeding our expectations, or at least mine. Can\'t wait for Project Ego, Enclave and Brute Force. :D

me too kimathi :) ...I\'m so curious and excited about Project Ego,Shenmue2,Doom3 and Brute Force !

WOAH, I am suprised that Sony sold more than Xbox and GC. With all the hype surrounding the two newcomers launch, I thought they would sell more than the soon to be 2 year old PlayStation 2.
Hell yeah!!! :D

I\'m not surprised at all due in partly to PS2\'s larger library of fun games right now, or at least, this is the main reason that most of the ppl that I knew used for still getting one. It will be interesting to see how this plays out next holiday season when Xbox has a larger list of it\'s own fun games.

That\'s all I need to hear. I need to start saving up for an X-Box now.

XBox has great WOM advertising behind it. Even old people that come into Best Buy know what XBox is.
It is interesting to note that Best Buy\'s fastest selling console of November was...Dreamcast. When we lowered the price to 50 bucks, we sold 75 in two hours. If Sega was actively making and shipping them, they could have easily sold more than all of the other consoles. I can\'t believe how many people still come in day after day asking if we have Dreamcasts.
On another note, one of the last games, Conflict Zone, was supposed to ship yesterday, but we didn\'t get it in today! We better get it, dammit!

Yes I am surprised too that xbox is selling that well.
I wonder how well xbox would sell if they had more consoles on the shelves? This must be very nearly 100% sell through--makes you wonder how mnay consoles Sony is selling because of the lack of xbox units.
I am glad N is doing poorly--this great company needs a wake-up call.

What\'s up watchdog.:) :) Both Sony And Xbox is outselling the gamecube yes nintendo does need a wake up call there a world outside of kiddy games.

Dreamcast for 50?
I can\'t find any of them anymore here on Guam.. :( Nonexistent. I will just have to wait till someone trades one in.

The x-box have been aout for a month now and have sold almost a million. The PS2 has sold a little bit more than the x-box. But the PS2 has been out for over a year!! This is not good news for MS and Nintendo. Even though the x-box and the GC is out this doesn´t affect the sales of the PS2. A lot of people talked and said that after the GC and the x-box arrives, the PS2 will drop back heavily. LOL
This is in the Homecountry of MS. The US!! If a japanese company like Sony is selling more PS2 than MS is selling x-boxes in the US just a month after the launch of the x-box then you can start woundering how the x-box will sell in Japan!!!
I have to say: The GC and the x-box has no chance whatsoever to catch up and beat Sony. It is not going to happen, Call me a fanboy or whatever but come on, the PS2 just keeps on selling like hell!!
-
I don\'t think MS or the big N need to beat Sony\'s sales figures this time around.
Do you think that there is not enough room in the console market for two or three consoles?

My take on this is....
1. Xbox and GC commercials are all over the place. PS2 console, relatively few.
2. PS2 will drop the price by February, that\'s my guess so don\'t quote me. Sony makes their own hardware and is finally making a profit off its console sales(they recently announced), so they can reduce the price in the US. So expect another surge of PS2 sales soon.
3. Xbox is selling quite well, just 30,000 units shy of beating PS2. That\'s only half a football stadium, folks! Quite impressive!
4. What\'s this? PS One is selling too! :)
5. Game Cube sales will pickup as we get closer to Christmas. Also, when Resident Evil finally hits this Spring, expect a GC surge.
6. Pokemon will save GC again.
All in all - the three systems are doing quite well. GC is at what I expected since its line up of games is small yet the consoles are still selling. PS2 is unexpectedly selling well even though the TVs and radios have mostly Xbox and GC stuff.
****
If Sony had 2 million PS2 at launch, it probably would have sold out in 2 weeks. Remember how long PS2\'s were continually sold out at stores? Just last Spring, nearly 6 months! If they had the supply, there would be 10 million PS2 owners in the US alone.
-
I got to agree with Bossieman. I don\'t see Xbox or GC anywhere catching up to the PS2 this generation. And I do believe it is relevant. None of this company (especially Microsoft) is in this console war to settle with second.
I also agree with GmanJoe.
-
Well, I would think MS and Nintendo would have to be crazy to think they would out sell the PS2 this Christmas season. It\'s just not going to happen with the raw numbers that Sony has shipped.
I am sure they have long term business plans. Do you think they would just throw up their hands and say we can\'t beat Sony, so lets give up? Of course not. If that was the case, Sony would have looked at Nintendo and Sega and would have said screw it.
Of course all three want to be number one. The gaming industry is huge and I think two consoles could coexist.

All 3 can co-exist but it wont be any 33% each more like 70% Sony 15% MS and 15% Nintendo.
Maybe not that high later on but current numbers in USA:
Sony PS2: 91%
MS: 5%
Nintendo: 4%
The Sony numbers will drop but how much, down to 33%?
-
That\'s a good question, but only time will tell. If MS and Nintendo have the games people want then it will change.
I know it\'s obvious, but it\'s always the games.

Just give the Xbox a little more time, b/c as you rightly point out it has only been out for a month and a million in sales by the end of this year is very impressive for the underdog MS. You state that PS2 has been out for a year as if that is a disadvantage, but therein lies it\'s advantage over the Xbox b/c it has had time to build a larger library of games. Give the Xbox that same amount of time to build it\'s library and see if the PS2 still maintains this very tiny lead of less than 100,000 more units sold over the Xbox. By next holiday season, I will be fully surprised if it is not the other way around.
The only thing that I\'m actually surprised at is how close the sales are for that time period given the circumstances. I fully expected the PS2 to absolutely spank the Xbox in sales. I actually believed the Xbox sales would be a distant third due to the fact that it is the underdog trying to break into a new market. I\'m beginning to wonder if PS2 sales are already peaking in the U.S. with it being relatively so young here. I wonder what would have happened if they had launched at the same time, would PS2 still be the current console leader? With a five year life cycle, the Xbox has a lot of time to gain ground and it may end up dominating sales in the U.S. The entry of MS in the console market could end up fracturing the current chokehold that the Japanese have with Sony owning Japan, MS dominating North America and Europe being the key for complete leadership in the industry.
On a personal note though, I could care less who ends up selling more units as I will have the best of both worlds.
-
These figures are so damn inaccurate. Of course the PS2 is selling more! The figures are from November 11 to Dec. 8th. Xbox wasn\'t on sale until the 15th and GCN wasn\'t on sale until the 18th.
-
it doesnt really matter who is selling more units now
what matters is who wil have SOLD the most at the end of this generation
and we all know who will have the largest user base
:)
-
Who? Tell me, I want to know. ;)

Actualy if you think about what nintendo is doing they are on the ball if your thinking long term. Xbox and PS2 titles are getting more and more adult....lets say 15 and older. That means that PS2 and Xbox\'s core of people will be basicly done with console gaming in 5 or 6 yrs. Nintendo is pushing its products to the sub 10 yr old market where the money should be. All they have to do is have mature enough software at the end of the 5 yr console lifespan to keep those kids who were 10 and now 15 buying the apps. So nintendo\'s market is about double what xbox and ps2\'s is except the fact that the people who are going to be getting the xbox or ps2(except for christmas presents) can afford to buy them themselves in most cases. Now before i get alot of guff from post teens in here about how they are still console gamers and im impling they are immature for still being there, im talking about the market as a whole. Im 20 and was never a big console guy, i mostly leaned to the computer software titles that were 3d before any of the console manufactures could make a 3d console cheap enough to sell.
What i cant understand is the drastic change in microshafts marketing concept. For damn near 30 yrs microsoft hasnt give\'n a hoot about hardware, and they were right. The money is in the software in the computer market. If microsoft makes 4 million xbox\'s and sells that for just enough to not loose money(about $200 or so) and kicks the software price from 50 to 60 bucks you would prolly see GC and PS2 head\'n for the dumper for christmas sales, and thats where the money is with consoles. I would be willing to bet that they only sell twice as many consoles from Jan 15th to October 15 as they do from Nov 1st to Dec 24th. And thats saying something!

The way I see it. PS2 and X-Box will be the major player this gen, with Nintendo gurading it\'s niche kiddy market fiercely.
However, I don\'t see the X-box making it in Japan....
The real winner of the war will be seen end of this year but I don\'t think anybody can get away with a major share like the Playstation One did..ever again.
