I\'m not racist at all but I was just curious how they can get away with calling a TV channel Black Entertainment Television. You know if there was a White Entertainment Television everyone would be up in arms. They play Black only college football; Does that seem a little racist towards everyone else to you? I know some of you may say that NBC, CBS, etc. are all "White Entertainment Television" with a different name but they do contain black people. And why do they, of african descent call themselves "African Americans"? Shouldn\'t white people then be called "European Americans"? Why can\'t we all just be americans? Like I said, I\'m just curious. I\'m not trying to make any racist comments, but I would like some other\'s input and opinions.
-
I think people should stop classifing each other in the world. I guess its BET for the same reason there is an all asian cable channel in my area. Remember the old TNN? TheNashvilleNetwork, nothing but country/western type stuff.
I definitely dont agree with XXX only cable channels. I do agree that we should all be called americans and just identify with our races in our own fashion.
At the same time though, I think every ethnic group should have a cable channel, TBC the british channel,BET...french channel..etc.. etc.. Do you know what I mean? I just dont think only 1 or 2 races should have their own exclusive channels, should be all or none.
-
I dunno, but I think BET is cool. I watch it all the time since I\'m a big fan of hip-hop. I don\'t really care if its called Black Entertainment Television, as long as they show what I want, then it\'s all good. :D
They even have NSync\'s Gone video in rotation now, and they aren\'t even black.
-
BET exists for the same reason that Playboy channel and ESPN exist. It\'s focusing on a target-audience. I kinda understand where you\'re coming from, but BET doesn\'t try to keep anyone from watching it, and neither does TNN, Nick, or CMT .
It IS a little different when you\'re talking about racist country clubs and other sporting clubs. Should women be allowed at male-only country clubs? Should we outlaw Asian festivals? I honestly don\'t know the answer to those questions. It\'s obviously a very heated issue.
-
Well BET also plays Eminem, Bubba Sparxxx, and a few more I can\'t think of that are white. So it seems to me it\'s called Black Entertainment Television, because they are entertaining black and any other color viewers that like rap/hip-hop and the blues...
They have blues music on there sometimes.
It\'s just called BET because it was founded to appeal more towards that race. In todays time though it\'s not uncommon for all races to enjoy differnet types of music. \'ESPN deportes\' is called that cause cause it\'s for spanish speaking people. So i think you see what I\'m sying

Oh, glad you cleared that up because I was about to say:
I definitely dont agree with XXX only cable channels.
That\'s right, there should be XXX on every channel.
But yea, it is racist, kind of. I mean, it\'s not like they keep white people from watching it.
I do have to question channel 265 on our satellite system. The Klan Entertainment Channel? Now that doesn\'t seem right.
LOL, just kidding, of course.
It seems fine.
Wait, what?

something else I just thought of, BET and other channels targeting a specific group of people are really no different than anti-abortion groups protesting...KKK and skinhead groups demonstrating, church gatherings..etc.

I\'m not racist either, and I have black friends, but what do you expect with BET, its the same principles as a black guy saying a manager is racist because he didn\'t hire him, from what it seems to me, its not whites separating the races now, its blacks
**remember I meant no harm to anybody in this post**

I\'m not racist. I just don\'t like black people.

If you two really believe that, you both need help. Sure every group has it\'s bad apples, but typically, who are the majority spreading the bs we call racism?

Blacks I know are just as racist as whites. No doubt about it.

PTB: my question is why do you even associate with racist people?

I\'ll second that. I don\'t envy any african-american (or anyone other than caucasian) walking down the streets of Alabama, Mississippi, or Louisiana.

I don\'t envy anyone, I don\'t consider one race any different from any other, but I still stand with what I said, to me blacks seperate races more than whites do, and if you think other wise thats nice, I\'m just going off what I have seen

Im exiting this conversation before I get myself into trouble.

just say what u feel.

The reason why they have BET is so that African Americans have a channel that they could relate to. They don\'t need a WET because majority of the people on TV shows are white. For example TRL\'s countdown is mostly white artists versus 106 and Park [which is on BET] which is mostly black artists. It is not racist at all because it does not say "Only for black people" but it is targeted to them but anyone can watch it.
-
Yea don\'t think of it as racism, think of it as demographics.
They\'re trying to get ratings.
Besides, it\'s not the first time it\'s happened, we already have the WB. ;]

 Very ignorant statement.
I don\'t understand how someone can say that the concept of BET is racist. It is not a Blacks-only channel. They don\'t say whites can not participate. As a matter of fact, BET is owned by white people. So explain the logic behind the whole argument.
I don\'t see any threads about St. Patricks day being racist, or Telemundo being racist, or Lifetime being sexist.
Enough of that stupid logic.

TNN was all hite before it was bought and changed?
BTW, just b/c black entertainment is in its name doesnt mean its exclusive. They just target a specific demographic.

The only white people I remember seeing on the channel were Eminem and Nsync.... So I guess they do target a specific demographic.

Cool, I was just wondering.
I don\'t see many black people on the Country Music Channel. Is that racist too? No. Its a niche market. At the time that BET was created there were no other channels showing music videos of black artists. So they started their own. WTF is wrong with that? Now it has become a channel that caters to Hip Hop and R&B fans. How is that racist? Because there are more mainstream hip-hop artists that are black? C\'mon now that is bullsh!t and you know it. A lot of you just wanted a little opportunity to let out some of your pent up aggression you have against blacks because apparently you think we get unfair treatment. That is also bullsh!t. Anyone that tells me there is no more racism in American society is a fuking liar and oblivious to the truth. Racism isn\'t as bad as it used to be; but it still exists. And on that note "Reverse" Racism is also out of control. I know a lot of white people that would hesitate to walk down a street in the ghetto after dark just as much as I would to walk down a street in the deep south.
BTW, I keep saying it and no one responds. How is BET racist while CMT is not? I have never seen a black person on CMT. Maybe in a commercial; but I don\'t watch it enough. At least you have seen white people on BET. On that not, isn\'t Telemundo racist? All they have are Hispanic people. Boo @ that. BTW, Just in case you were wondering, or you missed my last post. BET (as well as Telemundo) is owned by white people.

So because it says BLACK Entertainment Television it is racist? If it was changed to Urban Entertainment and had the same programming would it NOT be racist? Your logic is flawed. I already explained why it is called Black Entertainment Television yet your vision seems to be clowded. When the channel was founded EVERY music channel, let me repeat that, EVERY music channel was ALL white. Not one black artist. So they decided to make a channel that would showcase black artists. Hence the name. The channel itself has branched out into different kinds of programming and is far from exclusively black. Why is that SO hard for your mind to grasp? CMT shows NO black people and they are not racist? Get your heads out of your asses. Your logic is so terribly flawed that it sickens me.
Its like talking to a brick wall with you guys.

Wow, man.
How high is this guy\'s soapbox?
Dude, don\'t you remember acts like Prince, MJ, (OK, so he\'s not black anymore...) herbie hancock, eddie grant, run dmc, PE?
They all had videos on MTV at its earliest stages.
Not to throw gas on a (boring) fire, but they weren\'t all, I REPEAT, ALL white channels.
-
^^^See, that shows how much you know. The first Black artist to be shown on MTV was Michael Jackson. Before that not ONE minority artist appeared on that channel. This BTW was after BET had already surfaced. They were not showing the artists you mentioned until a long time after that.
-
Where are you finding this info? I\'d like to read it for myself.
-
It doesn\'t bother me that much. I mean think about it. I have about 115 channels on my TV. I\'m gonna do an experiment right now. I\'m gonna flip through every channel and count the number of black people I see.
*Experiments*
Okay, outta the 115 channels, I saw 2 black people. And about 100 white people. And the 2 black people we\'re on ESPN and BET. So it\'s fair for them to get a target channel.

You probably don\'t have a clue as to how it feels to be black in America. Historically, we have been purposely shut out of every societal institution and prevented from participating in the so-called "American way of life". We have been separated from almost the first day we were brought here against our will during Slavery. There are millions of everyday examples of how we are still made to feel separated. You act as if racism no longer exists in this country. It would be different if racism was abolished along with slavery, but the James Byrd incident didn\'t happen 200 yrs ago. It would take longer than what is allowed in a forum to explain to you my own personal experiences of racism, and you still probably wouldn\'t understand. Some whites still make a distinction between the races, so don\'t act like it\'s just Blacks. Until the harm that was wrought during and after slavery is adressed publicly, this country will never be fully united. Your casual dismissal of real racism in the workforce is a testament to just how separated we really are as a nation.

How in the HELL do YOU know what it feels like to be black? Turn on the t.v. everyday and you\'re made to feel as if your black skin is more of a curse than something special. You\'re made to feel as if your kinky hair, your thick lips and your broad nose is not the beautiful ideal.

There\'s nothing wrong or illegal about BET. There\'s also nothing wrong or illegal in starting up a "WET". But you can bet all the left-wing NAACP wackos would come out of the woodwork and protest to high heaven over it.
The one thing I wish people would get over is this "dash American" trend. "African-American", "Asian American", "Latin American". Unless you were born in Africa and moved to American you\'re not "African-American." And if you weren\'t born in Asia and moved to America, you\'re not "Asian-American", you\'re just American.

Personally I prefer the term African American, who are you or anyone else that they feel they have the right to define what others wish to call themselves? Although I\'m not originally from Africa, my ancestors were and I have the right to identify with them if I so choose. That is part of my blood and heritage and I\'m proud of it. The idea that others feel that they can control who you are is part of the problem that has it\'s roots in racism.
Yes you are right, some NAACP members probably would protest a WET, but I don\'t think that is right either. Every person has the God-given right to define himself on his own terms, it\'s what being human is all about. I would not stop anyone from expressing love or hatred toward anyone, myself included, as long as it doesn\'t affect my life or health but at the same time don\'t hinder me from doing likewise.
-
The reason I don\'t like "African-American" or any other "dashAmerican" name is b/c those words already have a meaning and they are contrary to the way you would use them. "African-American" is a person who became an American citizen not by birth in the United States, but by immigration from Africa.
If you want to call yourself the son of Jihad or whatever else fine, but the words that are being used already have a definition and are being used incorrectly. It\'s the same thing as calling a lawnmower a tree.
-
To be honest, shouldn\'t they be reffered to as, "American-Africans" ? I mean how many blacks do you see born in Africa and move to the US? About 98.78696% of them are born in the US so they are not really African.

Your right about the WET thing, BUT..most everything is WET tv. Just think about mostof the shows on the air now.
I also agree with the 2nd part of your post. Everyone on my fathers never call themselves african americans since they were all born here. I try to stay away from the african american term as much as possible. In africa, I am hated by 100% africans..why? I not black enough, even if I was, I not african, plain and simple. True enough that I have it in my blood dating back 400+ years, but im an american, plain and simple.
However on my mothers side, they still call themselves german and polish americans, but yet were all bornin america.

Screw it I am through with this I am gonna go global with my new magazine Ivory to compete with Ebony, its on. Who cares about race that station was created awhile ago, it has its points, but it does not refuse white viewers, and nor shall any other tv stations.:D :fro:

There you go again, that is only your POV but you are not the one that determines how a group chooses to define themselves. There is no "correct" way that those two terms must be used together it is all a matter of choice and a majority of blacks in America wish to be called African American, when you refuse to do this in a sense you disrespect their choice. Africans that immigrate from Africa do not consider themselves African American, they consider themselves just African.
Why do you call yourself American? This country was named after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian. This country was called something else by the original indiginous ppl that were here first. Why don\'t you call yourself that? Are you a descendant of Vespucci? Why don\'t you use the "correct" term? You call yourself an American b/c that is your choice, why can\'t others be respected by being called what they wish to be called.

You were making a comparison between the two, and what I\'m saying is that there is NO comparison. By trying to show similarities of an organisation that promotes hatred, violence and White Supremacy to a network that promotes Black culture and awareness not at the expence or detriment to other cultures is a form of ignorance b/c you have not taken the time to do the research to see just how much the two differ.
As per your other statement, if you choose not to be associated with the term African American then that\'s your right but the statement that you\'re hated by 100% of the Africans on the continent is false. Do you even know any Africans from Africa? By your statement I highly doubt it. I have very good friends from Kenya, Nigeria, Liberia and Ethiopia and they feel no such way at all (unless you\'re speaking about yourself personally and why would 100% Africans just hate you. What did you do to them personally?). You might be surprised how some of the "brothers" from the motherland actually feel about African Americans. Now it is true that some Africans do not like African Americans but that is b/c of the colonialism that permeated African society fostering ignorance and hatred of one\'s own origin, the same way that some Blacks in America refuse to associate themselves with Africa due to the ignorance and self hatred that was created as a result of slavery.

The thing that upsets me is that you really believe what you are saying.
Because they were not showing black artists they should have just forgotten about it and let bygones be bygones? Do you realize how absurd your argument is? Were they black artists not worthy of having their videos aired? Do you expect white people to notice the lack of minorities on MTV and bring it to the forefront? No.
What you are saying is that when Blacks try to showcase more minorities, they are causing more racism. When in fact they are showing an accurate portrayal of American society. I know its been said before but there are no blacks, latinos, or asians on "Friends". Maybe you have never been to New York; but where is there an area with NO minorities in New York City?
You seem to have some sort of dislike towards minorities, blacks in particular. Care to tell us why?

It was just an observation in response to kimathi\'s posts about the "ignorance and self-hatred that was created as a result of slavery". Well said, I think that answers the original question perfectly.
And to add something that I thought of earlier: If they had called it something else like just ETV for Entertainment Television, I doubt anyone would have a problem.
With the name, though, they showed their demographic and some people took offense. Like if MTV was called Teen Television, would people over 30 have reason to complain?
Anyway, kimathi did a great job there.

What I am about to say may sound harsh. Infact, I know it is harsh, but it\'s true. You need a tragic thing to happen to you and then the only person there for you to depend on be a black / african-American. It\'ll change your perspective on a lot of things in life and maybe take some of those youthful naive opinions away.
I say this, because I speak from experience. When my mother got cancer, a lot of people never came around to bring me food while I was sleeping in the hospital with her (I was 13) . Do you know who did? A black man named Mark, who was part of the religion my mother and I was in . I had never really known a black person before, so I didn\'t have a lot of respect for them at the time. I was young and dumb. He showed me a lot though, not only about how to be compassionated and put color aside, he also showed me character. He was a black man, who came to live in a town in Kentucky that was still extremely racist and he never once acted like a victum nor did he let it get to him. Instead, he went about his way and done nice things for everyone he could. He never once formed the opinion that because some white people are racist , that all of us are.
Because of him and all that, I now have quite a few black friends and feel completely comfortable around them.
You can come up with any stupid excuse for not liking them, but they are still just stupid. You can try to make them legit complaints, but they aren\'t. I mean, look at your quote. What does it say? It is you complaining about how some black people are nice and some act like "gangstas" and are "complete ****". Do you think some white people don\'t do that? If that is what you think, I am positive you need to get the hell outside and have a reality check. There is terrible people in every race and you can\'t judge a complete race by a couple.
Wake up, kid. The world isn\'t that simple.
As for the actual topic of the thread, BET (that is the topic, right? ;) ). I don\'t personally see anything illegal about it. It is aimed towards a certain group of people, just like the LifeTime Movie Network is aimed towards women - hell it even says , "Television for Women". Is that sexist? No. That is just a channel aimed towards a certain demographic / sex. To make it even simpler, it is no different than the cartoon network being aimed towards kids. Does that mean kids are the only ones allowed to watch it? No. I know plenty of adults who watch it, including myself.
What some of you are missing is the line bewteen targeting an audience and being racist. It would be racist to make a BET channel and the ads on it saying "White people are not allowed to enjoy this channel". That would be racist. For there to be a channel that is just aimed towards the black audience, that isn\'t racist. It never says a white person can\'t watch it. It just has its own specfic audience. Big difference.

It is no different than when people with Italian/Irish/Greek/etc. parents call themselves Italian/Irish/Greek/etc. People that have parents or grandparents from different countries in the carribean say that they are that nationality. It is not a slap in the face to America. It is more like showing how diverse and rich the culture in america is. Americans come from every continent on earth and the people here like to show that. Yeah I think being called African-American is alot of bull.
You don\'t see white people everywhere being called: Polish-American, German-American, Italian-American, French-American, etc.
They are AMERICAN! And when one of my black friends went on a Safari to Africa, he thought he would have it made there cuz\' he was black, he was treated like nothing more than an American cuz\' those true African people don\'t consider so-called, "African Americans", African at all.

Yeah they just say Polish/German/Italian without the "-american". If you see someone that has parents from Sicily, they will say that they are Italian, not Italian-American. Nothing wrong with that?

Nothing wrong, just personal preference.

Do you challenge any of these as facts? So I disrespect you by not agreeing with your incorrect use of a word? Then call me and all other white people "WHITE THUNDER" or you disrespect us. See how that sounds?
You are claiming that you were born in Africa by saying you are African-American. I won\'t claim to be European-American, b/c I was born in America and no matter how far up my family tree my relatives from Europe are, that does not make me European.
Actually some of the things we are discussing go deeper than a debate about BET.
My philosophy is more akin to traditional African thought and beliefs. Those facts you brought up are indeed true but in keeping with African tradition, I am what my father was and what his father was to him and so forth all the way back to Africa b/c to us, what your ancestors are and think DO matter (yes I know I used the word think in present tense, that is a whole nother spiritual thing). I think most Blacks that want to be called African American are alluding to this belief. We are still connected to our past. It is said that a ppl that forget their past are destined to continue to make the mistakes of their past and I believe that.
If you want to belive that is an incorrect use of the word, then that is your POV but it is certainly not mine. Yes you do disrespect ppl by not calling them what they wish to be called and if a white person wanted me to call him WHITE THUNDER, then that is what I would call him. Why? Because it is a matter of compromise and that is trait that makes us human. If I want to have peace with my neighbor, then I will respect him/her. Personally, I don\'t care what you call Black ppl (do your own thing) it\'s no skin off my nose. If you choose to disrespect others b/c you don\'t believe in compromise then so be it and you deserve whatever reaction you get from them, be it good or bad. That\'s your karma. I prefer harmony first ,above all.

Gohan, I totaly agree with most of your post except the last part. I used to think just like you about how Africans feel about African Americans. As I\'ve I stated before, I have several good friends from different nations in Africa and their attitude is just the opposite. I was given my name "Kimathi", in an African Naming Ceremony by Africans. To be totaly frank, by my experience, the brothers and sisters that I\'ve met from Africa wish we wouldn\'t call ourselves African American. They prefer for us to call ourselves just Africans also.

Just a thought...
That is true CHIZZY, but there were so many factors that resulted in that phenomenon, that couldn\'t be explained in a forum. I\'ve done a lot of research concerning African history and the effects of slavery and that would be another whole book on it\'s own.

You don\'t get what I\'m saying.
When I see a black person walk up to me, I don\'t hate them right away. If they ask me a question, I\'ll answer. If they ask me a favor, I\'ll do it. If they come up to me and say "hey nigga, gimme so money(example)," I just walk away. And the truth is, at least half of them are like that. Since they\'re black, they can call eachother niggers, be loud and obnoxious, and act like they need to be different in a radical way. And don\'t give me **** like I\'m racist. How many times have you seen a Fubu shirt? Fubu means "For Us, By Us." Well, that\'s not racist. You say BET is a channel to see blacks? Well why can\'t they see other races if they\'re not racist? CUZ THEY FEEL THEY HAVE TO.

I don\'t consider it disrespect just b/c you want to be called something and someone else doesn\'t want to call you that. My full name is Robert. I prefer Rob, but when someone calls me Robert or even Bob I don\'t consider it disrespect. I understand what you say but I think you are misunderstanding the intentions of others.

So what...Hillfiger is racist, FUBU isnt. BTW..most dont walk around calling themselves niggers, they call each other nigga\'s. There is a big difference in term. All types of people are loud and obnoxious. White people are the ones I see more of "being different" as you put it. Punk rockers..metal heads,goths...etc..etc
I dont care what you say, it comes out everytime you post vivi, I believe you to be racist and prejudice for what ever may have happened in your life between you and a person of color.

Maybe you don\'t consider that disrespect but there are others that do, I being one. Calling others what they wish to be called is a form of acknowledgement and the beginning toward mutual respect between parties. Mutual respect breeds cooperation and mutual cooperation creates a bond. A bond secures peace. Maybe ppl that believe like you do are the ones that misunderstand.

You know what? Every time a crime has been commited against me it has been an "African-American" person. all 3 times I\'ve been jumped and mugged, both times my car was broken into (I watched one happen, and they caught the second one with my stereo 3 blocks away), and my apartment building was burglarized. I can\'t even come up with this kind of crap. Do I think that the people as a whole are criminals? No. If it wasn\'t them, it would have been someone else. It\'s the facts of life, kid. Theives are theives. Beggars are beggars.
Maybe you\'re upset because you feel like you can\'t be in their club or something.
-
How about something like the "Black Entertainment Awards" or whatever..... They hold awards shows for only black people to win. I don\'t really see this as being fair and I do consider it to be racist, white people can\'t win, chinese people can\'t win so is that not being racist?
I mean black people can win awards in the Academy awards, Golden Globes or the grammys so why do they feel the need to have their own awards show? There is plenty of talented white people or even Japanese people who never get a true chance to show their talent to the world or get rewarded for it but you don\'t see them *****ing about it.
Anyway that\'s just my little view as I see it today.
-
This is a losing battle. No matter what I or anyone else says you guys are always going to ignore it. I don\'t know how Japanese and Chinese got into the argument but if you want to go there. Japanese and Chinese people have a bunch of asian only clubs and organizations themselves. There is an asian equivalent of just about every african american organization you can name. The same goes for every other race.
Also I still don\'t understand how shocasing black artists and talent is racist. If the television landscape is 90% white with some minorities sprinkled in what is wrong with those minorities having ONE OR TWO channels that showcase their race? The spanish have got their own awards show. I\'m sure there are awards shows in asia also.
-
Well ok, but do have you ever seen a whites only award show? Could it be Black people aren\'t talented enough to win the academy awards or say a Grammy? No they definitley can be so why must they have their own damn awards show where they don\'t hand out awards to anyone other than black people. That is extremley racist. Why don\'t we have a restaurant where only white people can eat? Because it\'s wrong to discriminate based on skin color alone. Gohan you know you can\'t argue against anything I have said in this non gramatical paragraph.

"If the television landscape is 90% white with some minorities sprinkled in what is wrong with those minorities having ONE OR TWO channels that showcase their race?" - LIC
Yeah, but the funny thing is.. I\'ve watched the BET and rarely do they ever have "All Black" or "Predominantly Black" casts in their shows/movies. Usually it\'s a cast of white actors with one big name black actor. That\'s it. For example, the movie Screwed was on recently. 1 black guy in the whole film.. whoopty friggin do. That hardly classifies as content appropiate for a channel that\'s supposed to showcase the acting talents of the black community.
I\'m not even going to get into the rest of the argument. We\'re all forigners here. Lets not forget that while we squable over "White Rights" and "Black rights" and racism and all that.. the true forefathers of this land are sitting on tiny little reservations out in the middle of nowhere. Seems like noone ever pays them any attention or asks their opinions on just how strongly they feel the sting of racial prejudice. The victims of our grandfather\'s genocide, and perhaps the most opressed race of them all in America is simply ignored.
Where\'s their TV channel, Award show, Music hour... ?? More than that.. where\'s their dignity?
Ah christ... nm.

Damn man, true dat.
Soon enough, the government is going to take what little they have now like they did in the past.
I think they made a book about the times the government screwed them over, the name of the book escapes me right now.
-
OK, so now we go from they are racist because they don\'t show white people, to they don\'t showcase black people because they show a lot of white people. whatever.
As far as Native Americans go. Believe it or not you pay for Native American reparations every year. Did you know that? Your fore fathers may not have even been in this country when the Native Americans were first slaughtered and stripped of their land yet you pay reparations every year. That\'s funny because most people don\'t want to apoligize for something that happened a little over 100 years ago, let alone pay for something that happened 300+ years ago.
I have Native American Grandparents so I could have taken part of the "reparations" also but chose not to.
In case anyone was wondering about what reparations Native Americans recieve:
Any Native American can attend a state school in their home state free of charge for however many years they attend school. This includes Room and Board/Tuition/Books. So basically Native Americans receive upwards of $40-50,000 each.(Low ball figure)

Okay, I have never met one white person who says, "Yeah I\'m Italian-American." NO ONE SAYS THAT! NO ONE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN! They either say they\'re Italian, or they\'re white. IMO, Black people are Americans, cuz\' despite their roots, they are nothing like real African people.
And you can believe what you want when my friend went to Africa but it\'s so true. Hell, he read an essay about it in our english class. He was surprised at the fact that it was possible for Africans to be rascist to him! Him, that is "African" as well. And even if he was trying to search out his roots, he wouldn\'t fit in, cuz\' he isn\'t african. HE IS AN AMERICAN. Him and I would be treated equally in Africa, cuz\' we are both considered only as Americans.
Kimathi, you seem to always want to be on the weaker side of the argument.

Really Gohan, those reperations aren\'t enough. That\'s no different than if Nazi germany had won the war - undergone a slight change of ideals - and decided to pay for the schooling of what very few Jewish people were left... and that\'s supposed to make it all better. Well, seein as how there\'s an African American collage fund, let\'s just tell all the black people around America who deal with racism on a daily basis to STFU because we\'re making "Repperations".
Money does NOT = Dignity.
Besides, any moron with a guidance counceler can get his way paid through collage in their home state. I suggest you do some serious reading on how American buisnesses and the American government are still finding ways to screw over the Native American people. Do you realize that in Montana(I believe) if 6 or more Native American\'s are found in a group off the reservation.. their considered a warparty... and it\'s legal to shoot them.
Oh, but we\'re payin for their collage so it\'s all Okey Dokey eh? There is no justification or aboslution for our treatment of the Native American\'s by our govn\'t and our culture.. both past and present. Don\'t even try.

and before you even think it, im not picking on you as you so often think, im asking a simple question.
black people in america have alot more african backround than you think.
Me personally, wont call myself an african american b/c im a half breed, my *black* side wasnt born there, and neither was I.

Well I\'m talking about the new generation of black americans. 97% could care less about their roots.
Just like 97% of whites.

Money does NOT = Dignity.
First of all, the United Negro College Fund is privately funded and operated. Native American scholarships are paid for by the government.
Second of all, I never said that Money = Dignity. I was merely commenting on the FACT that the Gov.t recognizes their mistake and is in essence trying to pay them for what they did over 2-300 years ago yet will not apologize for something that happened 100 years ago.
Third, It is illegal to have a goatee in Massachusetts. What is your point? There are a lot of stupid old laws in the books.
BTW, SonyFan I agree with you on pretty much your whole post. I was just trying to clarify some of my statements and offer a rebuttal to some of yours.
