you have single handedly created the WORST console controller in existance. you make the dreamcast controller seem like a work of art!
anyone know if the japanese controller will work in my US xbox?
-
Maybe there is a third party controller out there more to your liking. Have you looked at any of them?
Ace
-
Well mad cats has made a "hands friendly" X Box controller, I myself think the controller could have been a little better, but all in all it isn\'t half bad.
-
I know what you mean. I don\'t how many gamers they asked and polled but controller just sucks ass. I would have liked it if they would have just copied the dc pad and change it black and but Microsoft in the middle.
But until I pay off some bills I will be forced to keep the controller. But I have Nbalive 2k2 and I just hate playing it because I hate using the damn the controller. You have to press that damn black button to face your oponinent. Then move down to Y to block.
Thing is just too damn big.
-
It\'s official! I\'m the only one who likes the Xbox controller...it fits in my hands perfectly.
Oh yah, don\'t get the interact 3rd party controller. You have to press the buttons really hard to get a response. Unacceptable for games like Halo or DoA3.
-
Yes, the Japan controller should work on the US systems thats what people said on some Xbox forums. I got use to using the controller. :D
Heres the picture of the Japan controller. The select, start, clear and the black buttons has moved. I hope its the size of the Dreamcast one.

hmmm, now i wonder where mm can score a japenese controller

mm this is the second topic you started that you attacked the xbox controller. As I said in the first thread, the controller isn\'t bad, you are just used to the PS2 one. If everyone was using the xbox controller for 5 years, the dual shock would seem too small and its buttons too far apart.
I now really like the xbox controller. Get used to it.
-
http://firingsquad.gamers.com/features/ramblings2/
They also like the Jap version better.
some size difference huh
-
Well MM, it could be worse.. MS couldda ripped off the N64 controller and doubled it\'s size. ;) Maybe some of the Nintnedoites are right and it\'s all in how you hold it. I\'ve had mine for like 3 years now and it\'s still the most ungodly controller I\'ve set eyes/hands on. Xbox\'s is big, and takes some getting used to... but I jus don\'t see how you can say it\'s worse than the dreaded 3 prong boomerang.
-
I liked the Nintendo 64 controller a lot, though it was rather intimidating at first. I think it just varies from person to person.
Xbox\'s controller is okay, but it hurts my hands after a while. It is too bulky when it comes down to it.
-
maybe you hands are just too small MM...and you know what that means...............im hungry
-
nope, i got hands like clyde :)
it was just retarted to put the analog sticks on different levels and put the white/black buttons up so high
-
Yeah i thought the xbox controller was comfy until i got to play it a lot and my hands started hurting. Those black and white buttons are a B...! I thought they tested it and made it comfortable for the majority of the people, both small handed or large handed. And why did they put the analog stix on different levels? I dont know. I prefer the playstation stix for fps. Timesplitters was fun as hell and you had total control over movement over aiming. Also for games like starwars starfighter where you had the roll/yaw and pitch configuration. Plus the innovation put into games like yanya cabalista could never be reached. Even though the game was a flop another game could do the same thing and greatly improve on it making it great fun. For the most part the controller isnt a total nightmare. It could have been worse.
DAMN YOU MICROSOFT!
-
The controller is good especially for FPS like Halo. And as for those black and white buttons, they aren\'t used that often at all. The xbox controller has 6 buttons in easy reach and two that are a bit of a stretch. I don\'t see what the major problem with it is.

You can\'t jump while looking in a different direction. That\'s the problem. You have to take your finger off the R analog just to jump. That is why the PS2 controller is still #1 IMHO -- because the 4 shoulders make playing FPSs a breeze.
-
I like the jumping button right where it is and it was the designers decision. I read a bungie interview that said they didn\'t like the way most FPS are filled with people jumping and shooting--every online shooter I\'ve played caters to people who jump constantly and shoot. The way Halo is configured makes more sense because you can\'t dodge nearly as effectively.
It\'s a great change and it\'s the way a FPS should be.
-
The 3 prong bomerang sucked, PS2 has THE best controller. and x boxs controller sucks a fat nut
-
I really like the N64 controller. It fits right into my hands. The Z-button is a really good idea, and only the C-buttons leave something to be desired.
I also don\'t care for two shoulder buttons on controllers. I think if they structured say the GC controller to give your middle fingers a specific place to rest in the back of the controller, they could put the second shoulder buttons there. That way you could support the controller and still hit the buttons without thinking about it...
-Eik
-
Hey watchdog I am big xbox supporter and I have big hands. But lets be honest the damn pad sucks ass. The button are spaced to far apart. It sucks you have to be like 7\'1 300Ibs and have giant hands in order to say the xbox pad is perfect.
moving from the black and white buttons down to A,b,Y,X and that analog is horrible. I hate it.
That is why the ps2 controller is so better. The buttons are so much easier to access. ANd moving from L1,R1 and down to Triange or cirlce take no brains at all.

mm, I\'m just curious. I know a lot of ppl accuse you of being a PS2 fanboy but I believe you\'ve stated time and again that you\'re more of a Sega fan but I take it you don\'t like Dreamcast\'s controller either?
Personally, I own the dual shock for the PS1 and it feels a little small to me and it cramps my fingers around the first joint and sides. My Dreamcast controller feels a little bit more comfortable but it cramps my fingers around the second joint and only at the joint. Although I haven\'t tried the Xbox controller for an extensive amount of time, my initial impression was that it felt the most comfortable for my grip. My question is, what is the most comfortable controller that you\'ve ever played with?
-
Quddus, no I don\'t think it is a bad controller. How often do you go from black button to analogue stick? Not very often. And even in Halo when I have to turn the flash light on or in Amped when I want to switch the song or change the camera angle I don\'t find it to be a terrible inconvienence.
I too find the PS2 controller to be a little small, but once you get used to it, its fine too. I suggest you use the xbox controller exclusively for 5 years and then come back to me.
-
The "Dualshock" is the best controller ever designed IMO. It was innovative, and has always been viewed as a great controller.
The N64 controller was horrible, the dreamcast sucked ass too. The X-Box, It\'s alright from what I have used of it. I haven\'t spent a great time using it though. Once when I played Halo at Software ETC. Thats it though, so I can\'t really judge it.
-
The Japanese controller looks so ugly.
-
You really care how a controller looks? As long as it works well.

WRONG!!!
Best controller ever is the Japanese Saturn pad.
Followed closely by the Genesis 6 button pad.
:fro: :fro: :fro:
-
Ashford I agree with you 100% percent.
-
At the risk of being burned at the stake...
The PS and SNES pad are the worst...
That cross shape and 4 button layout really sucks for fighters.
And why the heck did Sony have to use symbols instead of letters???
I hate it when someone tells me to press Square and I have to look down to see which button to press.
-
You are all Wrong! the worst controller was the Atari Jagaur\'s! the origianl was crap the pro controller was better (they added shoulder pads and it was smaller).
Still didnt like the number pad in the middle tho.....
:hat:ScottyJ:hat:
-
I still think the worst controller is the NES controller.
It was too stiff and flat. BAH

How the hell is that any different from somone telling you to press the letter "A"

The Japanese Saturn pad is NOT the best, the Saturn NiGHTS pad is, silly! The Japanese Saturn pad is second!

True. True.
Altered, the NiGHTS pad is the one that looks like the DC controller, am I correct?
Because, I saw a few pics of it and thought it was a 3rd party DC con.

Burned at the stake is too good for you. Castration is more appropriate for you
the PS pad is hands down the best controller, and your whine about symbols is hillarious.
You mean to tell me you wouldn\'t have to look down to see a letter, but you have to look down to see a shape
I have the PS controller memorized 6 or 7 years ago which made the transition into the PS2 very simple
-
Well most controllers have a,b,c etc in a logical pattern across the pad so it\'s easy to find the correct button when told. But with the shapes garbage it makes learning the controller tougher. By now most people have figured it out, but my sister asked that very question over christmas when I was helping her play JD and really there is no good answer. It makes more sense to have it alphabetical, it was a illogical decision by Sony.
I thought the Nights controller was the Jap. Saturn one? If it isn\'t, then I meant the Nights one.
Yes the Nes and Snes controllers were terrible. The dual shock is just a natural progression--improved--of those early pads. I swear if we weren\'t all used to having our hands unnaturally bent to hold PS-like controllers we\'d all hate them. The GC controller is a great pad becasue it naturally fits into your hand. The xbox, to a lesser extent, does the same thing. The dual shock doesn\'t, not as well anyway.

I
No it isn\'t
those shapes are well associated with Sony controllers and very distiguishable from other controllers
Square circle triangle X is the way to go

The controller was the most interesting part of that game.
-
You get a person who has never played a video game on a console before and tell him/her to put these items in order:
c, b, d, a
circle, square, x, triangle
Then you tell me which method is more logical.
-
Thanks for explaining what I meant, Watchdog.
And I don\'t own a Sony controller so excuse me for not memorizing their lame pattern.

a b c d seems more logical than c, b, d, a.
But some people learn visually and others are auditory learners (that means hearing). So while letters may be easier for you, numbers or shapes may be easier for somebody else.
-
How can you even argue this?!?!
Everyone who has ever gone to kindergarten knows their alphabet and therefore will know how to crack the code I provided earlier (assemble these in order c, b, d, a).
My whole point is that by using an established ordering routine, people do not have to relearn something that could easily be avoided.
________
But some people learn visually and others are auditory learners (that means hearing). So while letters may be easier for you, numbers or shapes may be easier for somebody else.
________
You saying garbage like this makes no sense at all. So you are saying you learned your alphabet from your video game console? Give your head a shake. Visual, auditory whatever, it doesn\'t matter when people already know the system. Numbers would work too, and no one would have a problem with that either, but when you introduce a system that has no natural order or sequence you are making people work harder.
-
First of all "a b c d" are letters of the English language so that would only make sense to English-speaking people. Second English is read from left to right. The buttons on the PS2 controller are diagonal in relation to each other. So in what order do you read them? The shoulder buttons can read differently depending on how you look at them.
-
*chuckles to himself*

You have been arguing that most controllers have the letters in a logical order -- which makes them better than the "shapes garbage" of the PS2 controller. And after that, you even praised the NGC controller. So tell me, if you will, how the NGC controller is set up more logically than the PS2 controller...
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sumasshu.homestead.com%2Ffiles%2Fngccontroller.gif&hash=fbef1465e29783446a480a11a23d193f95a21986)
Reading that the "English" way, it reads B, Y, A, X. If anything, I would say that that is more confusing than the shapes of the PS2 pad.
BTW, I think the "feel" of the NGC controller is highly overrated. I actually think the Xbox controller feels more comfortable in my hands, but the Xbox button layout is worse (due to the buttons that are too close together).

I said I liked the feel of the GC controller and still do--although I haven\'t really used it much. I never said it was set up more logically, I just like the way it fits into my hand--different argument.
Disregarding the controllers that don\'t conform (you are right mixed up alphabet is no better than shapes), the controllers that do follow a logical pattern are easier to learn--that was always my point and still is.
Yes I am aware that the Japanese have their own alphabet, and frankly I don\'t care what organizing principal they use on their pads. Diagonal or not, assigning letters to the buttons could be as simple as closest to the player, left to right from there.
The shoulder buttons could follow the same principal using the only angle that makes sense--while the controller is in hand. The xbox controller isn\'t set up like this, but it still is logical once you look at it (right to left, bottom to top): two alphabetical columns.
At any rate this argument has been push far too far. My point is a simple one: my sister (a gaming novice to say the least) grew confused and frustrated with the "kindergarten controller" (her phrase, not mine). She wondered why they labelled the pad in such a confusing manner. It would have been easier to say hit \'b\' (she would understand that \'b\' would be next to \'a\') rather than hit triangle.

Thank you very much, Bozco.
Today, you have proven yourself to be nothing more than a Sony fanboy.
"Bozco\'s Dictionary"
gamer - one who owns at least one Sony console.
Now on to your second point...
Go back and read the thread and find where I mentioned the DC controller. Oh wait, you can\'t...
If your reading disability didn\'t hinder you, you would know I said the Japanese Saturn and Genesis 6-button pads were the best. But then again, those aren\'t real controllers as they weren\'t made by Sony.
-
did i just hear a toilet flush?
-
I didn\'t waste my time and read the whole thread you cock, I just figured since you mentioned letters that you were talking about the DC contoller, oh and just to let you know I own a DC, just thought you should know since you ignorantly label me, and I still think your a dumbass with the whole letter and shape thing, if someone can\'t figure out the controller in two seconds maybe they should take a class or something for it
-
Yawn...
I went to school to learn how to put A, B, C, X, Y, Z in order, not triangle, square, X, circle.
And you\'re still a fanboy for thinking only one who owns a Sony console is a gamer.
Please...
What other choice words do you have to direct towards me?
-
come on kids, take this crap out in the school yard, so we can all point and laugh
i dont wanna have to close my own thread :(

Sorry, mm...
But I don\'t see how my preference for the Saturn\'s controller over the PS controller could piss someone off so easily.

Sounds like a PSX/PS2 owner to me! :D MM, you\'ve been playing PSX/PS2 for almost a damn decade, of course you\'re going to dislike a totally new design. On the other hand, I\'m a Dreamcast owner and never owned a PSX/PS2 so the Xbox controller is PERFECT. It\'s not a matter of taste. It\'s not a matter of hand size. It\'s not a matter of whether you\'re a biased gamer or not. It\'s a matter of GETTING USED TO SOMETHING TOTALLY NEW. Unless you\'re quickly adaptable, I don\'t think that you\'re going to like the Xbox controller until you settle in. Once you settle in, you\'ll see why it\'s an engineering work of art. Your hands NEVER get tired, period. Keep an open mind about the controller and play on and you\'ll get used to it. In fact, you might even wonder how you ever played with the Dual Cramp/Dual Cramp2 controllers. I\'m a DC owner and I hate the DualShock controllers. It\'s all relative, m\'boy!
On the same line of thought, when I first saw the Xbox, I was like, "Damn! That sucker is huge!" But now, I\'m saying, "Damn, the Dreamcast is small!"
-
I think the Dreamcast controller was the best, hands down. I don\'t know about X-box, when I played it in NYC, it felt a little bigger, but it wasn\'t like I couldn\'t adapt to it. I don\'t really care for PSX/PS2\'s controller that much..but it\'s adaptable.
N64\'s controller on the other hand, no way!

I own a Dreamcast and I still think the XBOX controller is just too big. It\'s not that I\'m biased, it\'s because my hands simply hate the XBOX controller.
It\'s uncomfotable! I try to ignore it when I play Halo in my friends house.
The dual shock controllers are very comfortable, you have to have mutated hands if you don\'t like it.
Microsoft should\'ve made the controller smaller, that\'s all I\'m saying. It would be a very, very good controller if it was much more smaller.
I\'m not bashing the XBOX itself, don\'t get me wrong, it\'s an excellent system, but the controller will take a LOT of time getting used to.
BTW, I find it very funny that you consider a controller a "work of art."

I\'m not wrong with saying that the DualShock sucks and you\'re not wrong with saying that the Xbox pad sucks. It\'s just that you\'ve been playing the PSX longer and are used to it. In fact, you\'ve been playing with small Japanese controllers all of your life, so of course the larger Xbox pad is difficult for you to adjust to. I don\'t think I\'m a freak because I don\'t like the DualShock, it\'s just too small and I can\'t remember where those alien symbols on the buttons are. With X, Y, A, B, at least I know that there is a universal button placement, but there\'s none of that for Sony\'s convoluted design. The Xbox controller is just fine, so fine that I got whipped by a 6 year old in DoA3. He\'s small for his age and he held the controller just fine. The same was true with his 10 year old brother and my 10 year old cousin. I repeatedly asked them, "Is the controller too big?" And they said, no and continued playing. None of them complained about the controller size. It\'s only an issue to hard core gamers since it\'s not what they\'re used to. Microsoft was smart not to listen to the hardcore gamers and go with the data they already had. Because ultimately, it\'s the casual gaming crowd--the crowd that has no problem with the Xbox controller--will make or break the Xbox.
Get used to it. You\'ve been treated like a Japanese gamer so long until you actually believe it\'s the "right" way to do things. Keep an open mind. The "right" thing isn\'t always what you\'re used to or what most people are used to. I\'m glad Microsoft realized this and gathered their own data: American and Japanese gamers shouldn\'t be treated the same.
-
The new better and smaller XBOX controller resembles the Dual Shock 2.
They should\'ve made it black though, now it doesn\'t match the system itself.

MM is a fanboy! :p Anyways, I can spot lots of things "wrong" with this Japanese controller. Japanese gamers must have triple-jointed thumbs. However, they also like Final Fantasy and other Japanese-style RPG\'s.

I didn\'t say the XBOX controller sucks, I said it was uncomfortable.
It was hard to use, but it was still playable.
I\'ve been treated like a Japanese player all my life? What system did you have before XBOX? I\'m willing to bet that it was a Japanese company that made those previous systems. I should be able to get used to using the XBOX controller as fast as you did then. Because we both have been playing Japanese systems all our life.
The N64 pad, IMO, was a bigger controller than the XBOX controller, and it was made by a Japanese company. This whole "Big controller" thing isn\'t new. Both controllers are very uncomfortable, IMO. But, overall, the XBOX pad is better.
Just face it, some people dislike the XBOX pad, some people like it.

i was the one that said it SUCKS!
i\'ll keep saying it untill my japenese one arrives, or this dandy unit that makes me so happy!

With the Joybox Converter you can connect any PlayStation or even PlayStation2 joypad to your Xbox console. It supports vibration function plus features a memory card slot for saving game data.

****Ack, please remove images when quoting someone. takes that much longer to load, and eat bandwidth
The only problems I see is that the black and white buttons are simply too low and the color doesn\'t match the XBOX.

I had to adjust to the Xbox controller also, albiet more quickly than others. I also realized that I had been conditioned by the Japanese too and I had to correct my viewpoint on things. I have already accepted the fact that everyone won\'t like the Xbox pad and that\'s fine. However, there are those who will suck it up and get used to it and then there are those who will ***** and complain and never want to get used to it (MM). There\'s nothing wrong with that. However, if you\'re human, your highly advanced brain should be able to synthesize the Xbox controller and button layout and then you\'ll get used to it just like you got used to your other consoles.
Clyde on the other hand might want to stick with the Dual Shock and Dual Shock 2 which were designed for chimps by chimps. ;)

This has been argued here at some length before. What I find amusing is when people commonly refer to the top-facing button orientation, of the DS2, as being placed in a confusing and "illogical" fashion, when in reality it\'s only 4 buttons. Correct me if I\'m wrong, but that is some steep learning curve. Sheesh. Guess we are in real trouble when 10 digit phone numbers become a reality for everyone.

That\'s why I didn\'t even bother to say anything about it in my post.
Seriously, who still looks at the controller to see if it\'s a triangle or a square or if it\'s an A or a B?

I don\'t have to look for the A and B buttons, but if I would have problems with the Dual Shock since I\'m not familiar with the layout. It is by no means intuitive like the ABXY scheme. When I\'m playing a fighting game, I think the symbol inscribed on the buttons become VERY important. As seasoned Dual Shock players its second nature to you guys, but to someone not familiar with it, it takes getting used to just like the Xbox controller.

Only thing I don\'t like about the X-box controller is all those buttons are too damn close together. I can\'t hit the right buttons on DOA3.
-
My suggestion to everyone is check out the Madcatz Controller, its smaller, the buttons are spaced out, and its built sturdy
-
yeah, sturdy to break after 13.87 hours of usage
-
You mean 13.86 man.
