Title: What version is your PS2? Lets all play this fun game.
Post by: RichG on January 10, 2002, 11:44:08 AM
Hopefully this will pass sometime.

Well as everyone knows consoles are re-engineered and re-released to cut down on cost and fix problems. The PS2 is no exception to this and therefore a few versions of PS2s are now out around the world.

Im curious as to what version your PS2 is, when you bought it, and if you had any problems with it.

Identifying your PS2...

With exception of the JAP models (which is 1000x), the other PS2s have a code written on the sticker on the back of the unit in the form 3000x.

x is a number which refers to the country. 1 = USA, 2 = AUS, 3 = UK, 4 = EURO...

So im guessing (for examples that) MM\'s ps2 is 30001, RACERS PS2 is 30002, 00seven\'s PS2 is 30003 and Samwise\'s PS2 is 30004.

Also note if you got a PS2 GT pack the code will be 3500x

Next is the version... in America they have v1, v2, v3, v4 and v5, whilst in UK and Euro they have v3, v4 and v5.

HOW TO IDENTIFY VERSIONS AND WHAT THEY MEAN!!!!

V3 (Launch version for Europe, over a year old) = 10 screws on the bottom of the unit.

V4 (Released in March, DVD fixes and stuff) = 8 screws on the bottom of the unit.

Then came a special console known as 3000xR. So in UK it was known as 30003R whilst in america it was known as 30001R (see sticker where normal code would be).

30003R can come in both v4 and v5 flavours which both have 8 screws on bottom.

Remove expansion bay cover (doesn\'t invalidate warrentee, its just a cover on back which you can take on and off for extra hardware).

THE R MEANS THESE PS2s HAVE BETTER LASERS!!!!

30003R v4 - Metal rim on cover and no screw inside expansion bay.

30003R v5 - Plastic expansion bay cover and a screw inside.

V5 is the latest PS2. This PS2 doesn\'t run software like DVD region X and also has the latest drivers already installed (like what you get with DVD remote control).

The different PS2 versions have mainboards that are different. As new versions are released the mainboard is normally different to the previous version in a way that it makes it cheaper to produce for Sony and is more anti pirate like.

Apparently the better the version the more solid the unit. Less lip sync, less errors and better drive lasers etc.

So now identify your PS2, say when bought it and if you have had problems.

Mine is 30003 V3, bought on launch, had problems after about 12 months, had a lot of reconditioned v3\'s sent to me which have had problems as well.

Hope you find this post interesting, it should hopefully show that the new PS2s are more stable.

Richard.

Yeah technically you should have the R series PS2. The fact that you don\'t have the R series PS2 means one of two things...

10 screws - 30003 v3 (Launch PS2).
8 screws - 30003 v4 (Released around March).

Either way it sucks because theres 2 versions ahead of that now and you should have at least got the R series. This means that as well as missing out on the updates of the machine you have the older laser therefore you may get the old disc read errors which have been reported on this forum time and time again.

Further more theres a chance of the old someone taking a PS2 back to a shop and them restocking it and selling it. It seems strange for a shop to be selling PS2s which have been around since Launch / March depending on version. I\'ve heard of people not getting V5 but getting V4 R series which is bad compared to V5 (when you spend same amount of money) but i\'ve never heard of anyone getting V3 or V4 without the R series at this late date.

I don\'t mean to sound negative and I wouldn\'t worry about it, well "I" would but thats just me. Your PS2 is probably fine. At the worst its one which someone has taken back to the shop (ie second hand) and they have restocked it. However on the other hand they might have just had a few none R in stock, afterall the people who work in the stock part of the shop can\'t really tell what PS2 your getting.

EDIT - Just read over that post. It sounds so negative. If the PS2 works I would try not to worry about it. You could prehaps exchange it but you run the risk of getting a none working console and then you would have to go back to the shop again.

You replied quickly... I re-edited my post if you want to re-read it and I also added a EDIT section as well.

Hmmm excuses, excuses. Well you could come out with the old "it crashes after 2 hours of gaming", these are one of them excuses that the shops can\'t really test because they aren\'t going to play your machine for 2 hours. If you get a stock exchange now, they probably have got new stock, theres a chance you will get 30003R V5. You could also just tell them straight, all the information you know. However a PS2 is a PS2 and they may say that your PS2 is fine and not allow you to swap it then.

SCPH-10000 Import and a SCPH-30001 US.

No problems with the exception of ICO.  The horrible noise that it caused my machine to make made me return the game.  And i really wanted to play it too.

Yeah the exact same thing happened with mine. Well I was lucky? as my PS2 broke down about a week before the warrentee ran out but it sure was a hassle getting a working one from Sony.

My ps2 is bundle with GT3,

Model, 35001.

I have one question, does this model use .18 or .25 micron chip?  Hopefully, it was .18 which is more energy efficient and performance slightly better.  So, does anybody know?  Can somebody show me a site that talk about the new ps2 model with .18 micron chip.  Thanks.:D

Post by: RichG on January 11, 2002, 04:13:20 AM
You guys STILL aren\'t getting this thread. All your doing is posting your model number. Whats the point in that! I didn\'t right a thread about a page in length when all I could have said was "what does the sticker say on the back of the PS2".

The model number simply states what country the PS2 is from and has nothing to do with version number which states a) how new the PS2 is and b) what enchancements it has over previous PS2s.

THE ONLY PEOPLE who have understood this is Fastson & D3AD_RAGE.

IT ISN\'T that hard to understand. It makes me think that a lot of you have read the topic title and replied to that without reading the thread. Which still shows your ignorance as the thread title asks for the version not the model of the PS2.

If none of you can read the thread and spend 2 minutes looking at your own PS2 to find out WHICH VERSION it is then this thread mess well be closed. Least then I know I won\'t have helped anymore people getting extra posts (which it seems thats all they have replied for).

Don\'t mean to sound angry but this is the second time i\'ve gone over it.

EDIT - know it all wannabe. Thats what im going on about. You need the version of your PS2 to find this out. As a guess i\'d say since yours is GT pack it will be version 4. This was the version where the micron was .18.

the only thing the R means is that you dont need to save the info on your memory card so you can use the official sont dvd remote.

in other words the R has the info in the hard ware.

No better lasers and the like. The erm... dodgee shops which do chips also sell PS2 component parts say if you bust your PS2 messing inside. They sell the standard laser (30003) and the R laser (30003R). The R laser won\'t fit in the standard PS2. It is an upgraded laser. Theres even more differences but I don\'t know them all but the R definatly means the PS2 has a upgraded laser along with other changes.

D3AD_RAGE: I feel you should be allowed to swap your PS2. I know you are lying to them but say that it was true, your PS2 crashes, you shouldn\'t have to have a second hand PS2 from Sony because you bought a new one from Toys R Us. Another words they have been crap over this situation. Can\'t they give you gift vouchers so you can get one when they come back in stock. I can\'t believe they haven\'t offered you anything else. I mean if you ring Sony your getting a second hand machine for your new machine you got a Christmas, its stupid! I would get back on the phone and tell em it aint your fault that they have no stock and that you would like your money back!

ring up and ask to speak to the manager, then say you was rudely talked to by a certain person of the staff, and then explain it to the manager......usually works better

Im sorry! I didn\'t mean to come down too hard. I was just being grumpy! :)

For you tacos...

Look at the expansion bay on the back of the ps2. Remove its cover...

Version 4 - Metal rim around cover and no screw found inside the bay.

Version 5 - All plastic cover and you will find a screw inside the bay.

Hope this helps.

Rich.

Thanks Rich! I have a version 5 I do believe. I have an all plastic expansion bay cover. I see a big screw in the middle of the expansion bay if that is what screw that you are preferring too. Thanks again.
