Title: GeForce 4 info.......
Post by: rastalant on January 15, 2002, 08:42:47 AM
THERE\'S BEEN A bushel of information about Nvidia\'s upcoming NV25 and NV 17 announcements and we have some oil to put on this fire. We have been quiet about these chips but now we\'re not being.
From sources close to the company, the Fudzilla heard quite a few details.

NV 25 will be called Geforce 4 and will have the 4600 mark -- if we are talking about fastest version. It will feature 128MB DDR with a 128bit bus. There is still no any specific clocking of the memory but we can say that it is likely to use 600 MHz memory.

Nvidia will continue to use Titanium brand on this card since lot of people recognise this as acronym for speed. Sources suggest that they will call these cards "Titanium version".

The Geforce 4 4600 could means Geforce 4 with 600 MHz RAM just like Geforce 3 TI 500 meant 500 MHz DDR memory. When I say 600 MHz RAM, I mean on 300 MHz DDR memory.

The big surprise for me was the clock speed of this new Geforce 4 chip. It should be clocked from 250 to 275 MHz according to the source, which implied that it is very hard for Nvidia to accomplish this 300 core due to the complexity of the chip.

The card will have support for AGP 8X, the sources added.

As for the slower version Geforce 4 4400 you should expect 64MB DDR at 64-bit also to be called "Titanium version". We still do not have much information about exact clock speeds or the memory of this chip.

NV 17 will use Geforce 4 MX brand. It is interesting to see that what we used to call Geforce 3 MX – the very own NV17 becomes Geforce 4 all of a sudden.

We also learned that the NV25 was sampled to manufacturers back in December of last year and card designs should get to the final stages real soon now.

We will see some announcements in February, while you can expect cards sometime in March - Cebit time.

The last thing is the launch date – "a nice lady from the parking lot " said that company will launch the product in the first week of February and we may add that it should take place on February the 5th but I should warn you that this timing may be changed at the last minute.

Mass volumes of these chips are expected in March to meet the demands of its Geforce 4 manufacture partners.

So I guess that after this, an NDA (non disclosure agreement) does not make any sense, right Nvidia?

Cool........I can\'t wait to see this beast.:thepimp:

The geforce3 was close to $300 when it was new(it still is I think), I\'d set more along the lines of $500-600 aside.

just think

sometime in 2005 or 6 there will be a game that actually takes full advantage of the card

I was going to get a Geforce 3 but now I\'ll just have to wait for that Geforce 4.

Kinda funny I\'ve been waiting since my original Nvidia TNT 16mb which I still have in my PC

wait :crying:

take advantage of it?

a GF 4 will guarantee me a locked 120 FPS [max hz of monitor] at 1280x1024 resolution with EVERY detail turned on and 32 bit color.

...no offence...but you\'re simply wasting power for resolution and FPS...

...the same AI,physics,animations,gameplay...in a word...the same Game with better texturing, more draw distance and more FPS!  it\'s really sad :(

sad?  not when i beat down people at Quake3 team Arena CTF, in a 10 person firefight.  if i dip below 60 fps, it affects my aim and movement

Frames Per Second  is king when it comes to shooters, we all know that.

oh, and breaking a 10,000 3dmark score  :)

and lastly, making other peoples PC\'s look like toys

sure...frames per second are very important but 120 fps is a waste of power...however you missed my point...

no, i see yer point

i want to play Q3 and RTCW at max FPS, and with my monitor\'s max refresh hz being 120, it wont drop but a few FPS in a heavy firefight

i wish my xbox could do that.  im gonna go blind looking at 30fps while playing halo

What the 64MB Geforce 2, it would be nice to have one but my TNT2 has handled every game I\'ve thrown at it

I think a game like Quake3 could easily run at 170 fps on the XBox...while Halo of the X couldn\'t run on a PC...with the same details, effects and features...

ps:
I\'m pretty sure that if you could theoretically see, right now,all the potential of the XBox,PC games would look really sad!

theoretically   is the key word
there is no console game out there that my rig couldnt handle.

halo at 30 fps on a geforce 3 or 4 rig with all details?  laff, it will be done at 60+

I really think the core MHz is purely a joke. It\'s really just a gimmic if you think about it.

The most important aspect in data through put is how fast the memory is able to function. Sure, having a high core frequency is a plus, but I\'d rather have X card with a 275/600 than a card with a 300/550.

With nVidia\'s LightSpeed memory design, it\'s able to perform at or higher than ATI\'s Radeon lineup, regardless of their "potiental" specs.  ATI thought they could buy the show with outrageous specs, thinking they can win the hearts of market share holders and customers, but once they released that product, they had such inadaquet drivers to go along with it. This is where nVidia has established itself in the market, being able to distribute "most" of the time  quality, functional, and fresh new optomizations. I take into respect that ATI has indeed improved, but playing catch up in the PC graphic market is a up hill climb all the way.

Now back to the subject. I feel as though this war will never end. Just take a look and tell me how many games fully utilize the Geforce technology. I mean all of it\'s nice features. I still respect the first GeForce 1 up until today. If nVidia wants to be top dog in this situation, it has to let developers take advantage over it\'s technology and fully implement it into it\'s games. If nVidia is constantly releasing something new and X company already chose Y technology when they released Z technology, analysis then claim the title being "outdated."

I think the summer will be very interesting when ATI\'s new flagship card is released and nVidia\'s. I highly ensure you that their flagship cards will come at a premium, but without doubt, the prices will come down with competition.

Also, how about them BitBoys! King of Vaporware!

I have to admit I fell asleep about two sentences into this, but I had to chime in and say I want to make sweet love to your avatar JM.

Peace Out.
