In a CBS Marketwatch report, information has surfaced that suggests that a deal with both Enix and Square is currently underway. This could give a major boost to Xbox sales in Japan, where the two companies produce some of the leading game software titles such as "Dragon Quest" and "Final Fantasy."
"These big companies are very important and of course we are talking to them," Seamus Blackley, one of the so-called founding fathers of the Xbox and the game machine\'s technical director, said during a recent interview with CBS.MarketWatch.com
It is now apparent, more than ever, that Xbox is actively going after both Square and Enix, who are open to working with Microsoft to provide titles for the Xbox.

Tatsuo Tomiyama, an administration director of Enix made a statement about the company\'s involvement with Microsoft.
"We\'ve talked about making games for Xbox, but we are not planning to make Dragon Quest series for that machine as the game\'s target player differs from those that Xbox targets. It\'s going to be something different, even if we decide to make something for them (Xbox)."
Square
Square spokesperson Hideki Tsuchiya also confirmed the company is in talks with Microsoft. "Our company policy is to produce game titles for the game consoles that are hitting the jackpot, and we have nothing set about Xbox game development." The company remained tight-lipped about Japan shipment targets and on how many consoles will be available on the launch day.
Tsuchiya said, however, that Xbox seems an ideal platform for online game titles, given the machine\'s broadband capability: "We see a big growth potential in online game market and we don\'t want to be left alone when the (online game) boom suddenly arrives."
Wow, it\'s not just a rumor that they are talking...the companies are actually admitting it. Hopefully they\'ll admit some games some time in the near future. Maybe FFXI on all platforms will happen afterall...
This would definitely boost sales of Xbox in Japan...time to get out the check book M$. J/K:D

I know that Square announced the Final Fantasy series all the way up to 15, and that FF10 and 12 were to remain exclusive. What\'s the deal with 13-15?

Wow, it\'s a Square rumor. Remember Square rumors everyone? I haven\'t seen a good one in a long time. There was a million of the damn things back when Gamecube was still Dolphin and stuff. Ah, those were the days.

Did you read the whole post? There\'s none of the, "supposedly Microsoft is talking behind closed doors with Square..." BS. And the company having no comment like before...

Basically the equivilent of them saying "Square and Enix might be backing Xbox."

Basically the equivilent of Miyamoto saying "We\'re showcasing our hardware to them, to see what they think."
The quote from that Square person directly says that they don\'t have plans to make anything for Xbox. This whole thing says nothing. Except that Square and Enix maybe possibly perhaps might bring some games to Xbox in the future.

The money thing was a joke mm...and that\'s a whole debate by itself. What if Sony offered more money to stay exclusive, I\'m sure Microsoft could put up an equally impressive sum. AND I also think Square would garner a bigger audience and thus increase game sales and perhaps profit. This is just my opinion, like it or not...
and before you take this any further out of context M4...I never said it an "official announcement" or something to that matter. As you can see, I used "maybe" and "this would" as in these things could happen...which they could. ;)

I never said it couldn\'t happen. I just said that this article only provides solid evidence that they might possibly perhaps maybe happen. Which doesn\'t really offer anything new when it comes down to it. It always was known that it could happen, this is just an article dictating what we already knew.

I was under the impression that Square was making FFXI for PS2 only and had been canned for GC and Xbox. I was also not aware that Square had commented on the situation rather than say "no comment".

That\'s the thing. They said "No comment." Which could mean anything. There\'s always been two possibilities: That they back Xbox, or they don\'t. And this article just confirms that there is still two possibilities: That they\'ll back Xbox, or they won\'t.

You know what square said.. they\'ll develop for the console thats hitting the jackpot. In that case, 13-15 will be exclusive to Ps2... if it\'s still leading the moarket by a good margin, which I belive it still will be. Enix stated that even if they were to develop for Xbox, it wouldn\'t be a dragon quest game.. why? Japanese peopl love Ps2.. and Dragon Quest is one of the biggest names there. The case would be the same for Square.. Why leave the console where they know they\'ll sell more copies of their game than the Xbox even has systems shipped and where they know the game will sell well??

Why develope for only one system? And who knows how Xbox will do in Japan in the coming months/years? What if it hits the Jackpot and becomes the next PS...

I really hope Square does go multi-platform. All gamers should get their games. It\'s only fair IMO. SUPER MARIO RPG 2 ON GAMECUBE would kick some serious bootay!
And if it went multiplatform... maybe all systems could play future Final Fantasies online together...... cool.......

Super Mario RPG 2 came out...remember Paper Mario?
I really believe that FFXI should go multiplatform if not any other Square game...well that and the next Chrono game.

Not big stock, I think they own like 33% of the company in some respect...I\'m not sure.
What would Sony do?... I\'m sure Microsoft would be right there to take them under their wing should anything happen.

Say it with me class, "Xbox in Japan = DOOMED!!!" The DQ series was the only thing that could save the Xbox in Japan. Microsoft needed it. Now that it\'s going to a different console, it hurts Microsoft even more.

Japan has had many mixed reviews about the game even on PS2 - so would people really care to buy a new system for a game that is avaliable for a system they already have
anyway just saying - xbox needs the big games for the japanese to bite into it and the big companies arent willing to risk that yet

FFXI is just a prospect of possibilities that a developer relationship between Xbox and Square/Enix could bring about...it wasn\'t the point of the thread.

hehe Microsoft had to do this move in order to get Japan sales. Since Microsoft got into the gaming business all this buying out of game companies is not good for a company. More money more problems. He\'s forcing people to get the Xbox.

What is the big deal if square develop for the Xbox? i have a ps2 and xbox and i couldn\'t care less which console they develop on, i would be happy if they developed for PS2, XBOX and GC that way everyone gets to play there games, which in return would mean more sales for square, and make the gaming industry grow, which means better things for us gamers.
People take this whole square thing to serious, do you really think that it would hurt the PS2 that much, i don\'t. The PS2 has a good name, and is very very well knowen, they will still sell loads of consoles.
But i would like to see what they could do with the Xbox hardware.
But anyway that is just the way i feel about things.

Microsoft don`t need Square to sell in Japan. They need horse breeding- and subway-simulations. And dancing games. And Karaoke games. And other weird stuff.

"We are speaking with Microsoft and we have no current games in development for Microsoft."
That\'s like me talking to the Air Force about making a personal nuclear bomb for me. And their response : "We are speaking with GmanJoe. We have no bomb under development for Gman."
What news is that? They\'re always talking in some form or another.

i know its not a point but a prospect none the less and the important reason for Sqaure/Enix to develop for Xbox is for the japanese support - and if sqaure and enix arent gonna think about making games that would pull in the japanese market like ffXII, Etc. and Dragon Warroir - then its all in vain because it wont make a difference much in xbox sales

Why would that kill rumours? Microsoft could probably buy 20% of square, don\'t you think? I mean MS could pump big money into square as well, and it doesn\'t sound like Square if it is true, is ruleing out makeing games for Xbox, if they are talking to MS in the first place, but that is if the rumour is true in the first place.
Also Ace i am glad to see someone feels the same way i do to. If i was to hear that square was developing for all consoles that would be great.

It\'s just wishful thinking to me. It could happen, but not anytime soon. And if you really want to know the truth, I could care less if Square did develop for Microsoft or Nintendo. In other words, I wouldn\'t lose to much sleep over it if it happened.

Sure they could.. But Sony could tripple.. No 15x the number MS is offering.. Everything is good in theory.
Its not gonna happen. Square is Sony\'s little whore.. Whether they like it or not. Sony has bailed them out to many times.
Square is in dept to Sony.. Remember?
Enix on the other hand is a open book.. From that comment.. It doesn’t seem like they are to keen to develop for the Xbox though.

FFXI was never planned (or plain :p) for XBox...a Square guy once said it might go multiconsole and they had GC in mind...TeamXBox picked it up and thought that multi-console meant XBox...but this was a long time ago...it started so many rumours...if only people actually read the article properly...
