People have been all too fast jumping on the PlayStation 3 bandwagon of late, with the Xbox\'s and Gamecube\'s arrival on the scene, so PlayStationCenter took a timeout with Sony to see whether there was any truth in the rumours.
Speaking to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today, it seems as though the PS3 is still a fair way off, and their focus is still on the PS2 and more importantly, their online network.
They told us, "Naturally people will start talking about a PlayStation 3 with the competition starting to "heat up", but we can assure you that the PlayStation 2 is here for some time to come."
They added, "We have seen nothing on rival systems that could not be achieved on the PlayStation 2 with a little work, and to say that we are going to rush the next console to effectively get one over on the competition is plain ludicrous. The PlayStation 2 has much left to offer, and with the inception of our online technology we believe a whole new world will be opened up to console gamers."
When asked if the rumoured PlayStation 3 was in development they would only state, "We have looked at a number of strategies to strengthen our position in the market, and to bring out a PlayStation 3 would not be a good move for our existing user base. I\'m afraid you will have to make do with the PlayStation 2 for now [laughs]."
Now.. Can we stop these crazy PS3 rumours? :evil:

i think im gonna start camping out in front of Best Buy soon so i can get one when it comes out, kinda like those guys waitin on Star Wars 2 Tickets, same principle :D

i really dont see how you think its a bad site, theres not anotehr website that has a better forum or news page... they update the news pretty often, and the boards are about 70% helpful people compared to 30% trolls or fanboys...i guess since they suck is the reason they got an award for bein a very good Xbox site :rolleyes:

So um, will the PS3 finally see the release of the promised ICBM missle launcher Peripheral promised with the PS2, or are just going to have to wait until their online network is up and running as to allow for real-time course correction???? This is getting rediculous, I\'ve had mine on pre-order at Babbages for over a year and a half now!

i don\'t know what u huys are all talking about, sony has already made a couple of PS3\'s. and i have one, it\'s running at 200ghz, it can process 400trillion polygons per second, u can also run your cable, or satalite through it and interact with football games and basketball games on tv, in real time! it should be at EB in about a week, so everyone start calling everyday asking about it, and don\'t listen to what the guy on the phone says, just keep calling back.

Ok if I had to insert my 2 cents into this one, heres what I think.
I think that Sony should wait to market their system just around the time where the next generation starts. Marketing it BEFORE the majority of the competition releases their product is going to send their market share out the door packing.
Otherwise, if Sony chooses to challenge the odds, it\'s going to mean this at the end.

I don\'t see MS ever dominating.
I see them competing for sure
but with SOny Toshiba, and IBM already in bed together and the PS3 being one of the main beneficiaries fo this combined effort. MS and the XBox2 will have just as much work to do next gen and this gen

Well, I didn\'t respect Microsoft at all when they announaced they were releasing their X-box, but now that it\'s out, I do like a lot of titles. Some people don\'t buy it for the incredibly large size of the unit, perhaps the controller, and maybe because it\'s just because others say not to buy it. I feel that X-box is going to remain very competitive. Especially since their DVD\'s haven\'t been cracked yet (no pirating, yet). Sure, one day they might. But Sega\'s Dreamcast was cracked once it was released. That spells profit drop, no question.
Nintendo\'s view as of late, remains strong. They are still performing quite well, despite of recent Nintendo 64 history. Sure, they aren\'t without their mistakes, but right now, a lot of respectable titles are releasing. It should keep them making money for ahwile.
The next generation is going to be very interesting. With ATI\'s Radeon 2 success, will it in fact continue to build a superior product to rank higher than nVidia? Will we see Toy Story like visuals in the near future?
