I live in the UK and have a UK PS2. IF I but games in the USA, will they work on my PS2?

No, they wont.
U have to buy a chip to your PS2 first. I suggest Neo4 *******. With that chip u can play mostly everything.  It will cost u about 95$.
Or, u can buy an Super Universal PS2. These wondermachine plays everything :) All formats DVD, Japenese, US, European games etc....  Only bad thing about this is the price.... it costs
499$.
