Does anyone else have this problem? It seems to run fine and everything, but the drive opening/closing always produces a sound of grinding plastic. This is, without a doubt, problematic.

My old PS2 started doing that right before I took it back. The best thing I could come up with was dust in the tray gears. BTW thats not the reason I took my PS2 back. Mine did that about a month it\'s just dirty gears probably. And it\'s kinda hard to clean them without popping the console open. I never really worried about it myself, cause it didn\'t effect the way the console functioned.

Yea. The system is really dusty (not because I\'m not playing it, just because I haven\'t taken the time to wipe the dust off of it). So that could be it. Oh well.

Woo boy, you guys oughta hear my DreamCast, I think it\'s really ill. My neck also makes a nice loud clicking sound when I take my head far to the left. And I think my PS2 is pregnant, the bottom side bulges out so it wobbles about on the table when vertical.
My PS2 is getting quite dusty too... as is my MegaDrive, and SNES, and N64, eep! *gets a featherduster ASAP*

My PS2 makes this noise sometimes, but only when a disc is not in the tray - but it never affects anything, so I just shun it.

No!!! definitely not recommended. Last time I tried that with any kind of CD player, the WD40 ended up on the cds and then it ended up on the lens, and the cd player never played the same =P

Yea, that would suck.

My ps2 makes grinding noises when it\'s coming out of the system w/o a disk inside.... But that\'s the only time I hear it, and it\'s not terribly loud.
EDIT - Just thought I\'d share:
Today I got a CD Laser Lens Cleaner, the reason I got one was because - You know how when you put in a game and hit reset and start it up, and the game starts up without going to the black screen with Browser and System words on it? Well my ps2 went to that screen and made clicking noises and took longer to boot up the game - Now that I got a Lens Cleaner, my games boot up as fast as when I first got my ps2!
I\'m soo happy! Earlier I was thinking my ps2 was going to crap out on me... Now I know it\'s not gonna.. Bladez, I know your ps2 does the same thing, with the clicking noises and stuff... I\'ll have to let you borrow it. It helps a lot.
