Title: Games that really take advantage of the PS2\'s hardware...
Post by: CS2x on January 31, 2002, 03:39:22 PM
In my opinion, there are many PS2 games that look nice....but which ones really push PS2? I\'m not just talking about graphics, because you can have really amazing graphics, but there may be less on-screen animation or dreadful pop-up....the games need a combination of things. For example, you could say GT3 pushes the PS2 way further than GTA3,  but that could be wrong...although GT3 looks nicer, it has far less compplex A.I routines running, far less on screen activity, sounds, ect....(I\'m not stating GTA3 pushes PS2 further than GT3, it was merely an example)

My vote goes to Jak and Daxter for the game that pushes PS2 furthest.....simply because

(a) It has absolutely NO load times, coupled with....
(b).....amazing, sharp graphics, with lovely lighting and textures...
(c).....and with scenery that can be seen for literaly miles into the distance, with lots of onscreen activity, heat hazing effects, and great character models......
(d)..............it also has hardly any slowdown, running at a constant 60fts.

And all this with no load times!

(note:I\'m not saying it\'s the best PS2 games, just the one I think has really used PS2\'s potential)

Other games are...
(1) ZOE-Cack game, but increadible detail and speed (everyone seemed to forget this games amazing technical splenor!)
(2) MSGS2
(3)Devil May Cry

devil may cry did not have good graphics. some of the best graphic games are GTA3 MGS2 and Resident evilCVX (wasnt a great game just had really good graphics)

but graphics dont make the whole game

What I think he meant was the fact that the world loaded very quickly then didn\'t have to load any after

DMC had amazing graphics IMO.  Remember, there is more to good graphics than a super-high poly count.

Ironfist: Yep. Absolutely. You could have a hundred trillion polygon sphere and it still would be.... a sphere. :) Good design and attention to detail can compensate and even bettered than pure hardware power.

Just look at games like Vagrant Story, Chrono Chross, FF9 etc running on the dated PSX but still looks good and can even crush a lot of crummy games like TimeStalker(redefines the meaning of BLAND graphics) on the DreamCast despite it\'s superior hardware.

I thought DMC looked pretty sharp myself

I didn\'t think GTA3 graphics were all that great but the AI routines and the size of the enviroments are grand

Jak and Daxters graphics and world is very impressive. I just didn\'t care for the gameplay all that much or the characters

I\'m hearing quite a bit of praise for Drakans graphics not saying there the end all, but they\'re sharp and clean and the enviroments are huge and free roaming. I\'ll probably pick the game up and judge for myself soon

just your copy ol\' buddy...i mean..like...three seconds of unnoticible load time to initally start the world...small save times each time you get a new powercell (which are covered by animations) and split second cartridge length load times when you go through a warp gate

there are no points when you sit there thinking "ohh, its loading"

my vote DEFINATELY goes to J&D...amazing, up close its characters and rooms have as much details as say...Resident Evil Code Veronica X (probably better) plus you have all the rest of the world...its absolutely incredible!

lol.  I didn\'t notice this until reading all your comments.  I guess I should read a little slower.

FatJed86, how can you claim that GTA3 has great graphics (even looking past the slowdown), and not give credit to DMC for having great graphics?  like Bob said, how can you claim RE:CVX has good graphics but DMC doesn\'t?  IMO, DMC blew away RE:CVX\'s graphics (and the funfactor too ;))  I\'m starting to wonder if you\'ve even seen DMC.

*ICO Spoiler*
The second to last battle with all the black creatures had quite a bit of activity on the screen at once.  And there doesn\'t have to be a lot of activity on the screen to be a beautiful game.

the ai of gta3
jak and daxter
mgs2, where shotting people in different place effect them different ways, graphics, everything,

dmc
ico
state of emergency ( seeing all those people on screen at once impresses)
final fanatasy 10

but to be honest i dont think any game has yet push what the ps2 can do, it will always getting better. look at the ps1 compare tekken, to tekken 3

well said kop. I also agree that none of the games out now come close to pushing the ps2. Ive also *heard* that none of these games are even pushing %50 of the ps2\'s capabilities.

RECVX had great graphics 2 years ago when it 1st came out on the dc.  on the ps2 it was basically the dc version with a few jaggies but better color depth.  it still looks ok but there\'s better looking games nowadays.  how can u even compare it\'s graphics with dmc.

other games with impressive graphics

silent hill 2
ace combat 3

For real?  I play the game and after the game was first loaded.  I eject the disc and play the game without the disc to see if there is any loading.  to tell you what.  Even without the disc, i repeat without the disc in, the game still run @ 60hz, there are still lot of action on screen like enemy still run around and attack, i run around the big world and there aren\'t any load time.  I died and the game continue again and again after i died without any load time and without the disc in the ps2.  Nearly everything are already loaded on screen first time and it doesn\'t need the disc anymore except the music, cutscenes where characters talk.  If you have jax and daxter, you should try playing the game without the disc after it first loaded and see what i mean.  Before, I used to think mgs2 really using a good amount of ps2 potential.  But after seeing J & D, i think i haven\'t really see anything yet.  PS2 is really powerful and J & D proves it.

Baulders Gate: DA was fairly decent but not as good as the aformentioned games.

Are you sure you\'re telling the whole truth Paul2?  I know for a fact that J&D doesn\'t even go for a second without the disk in.  It streams data off the DVD constantly, which means the DVD has to be in the PS2 at all times in order to play.

Ohmigawd!!! How could ANYONE for even a split second, think that Resident Evil: Code Veronica X has better graphics than Devil May Cry?!

Tell me something, you don\'t live in America do you? I have no experience with PAL versions, or imports of any kind, but I have heard that some of those verisons unfortuanetly suffer graphically. Is this what is going on? Do you have a PAL version or something?

I will have to agree, the PS2 has yet to see it\'s prime in games, especially with games like "Xenogears" on the horizon. But, if I were to give a couple of examples of what games I think push the PS2 a bit, I would say MGS2, FFX, GT3, Baulders Gate DA (the water was pretty cool), and J&D. I know that there are many great games that could be listed, it\'s just so hard to pick.
