Title: Ghettomath\'s CD Recommendation
Post by: Ghettomath on January 31, 2002, 06:15:45 PM
BAND:  Thursday
LP TITLE:  "Full Collapse"

I know a lot of people in these forums are not so musically open but Thursday\'s second album was just released two weeks ago and it is all I can listen to.

They produce music that is very hard to define.  If you like groundbreaking and earthshaking you will enjoy Thursday.  The lead singer alternates between softly sung emotional music and periods of strained, animal-like screaming.  Bass is implimented, awesome riffs are implimented, even PIANO is implimented.  It is punk, almost emo (a softer, more "emotional" punk) mixed brutally with the screaming of metal.

If your unsure fire up the modem and try:

"Cross Out the Eyes"
"Paris In Flames"
"Understanding In a Car Crash"

Anyone else have the CD tell these people what they are missing!

I just downloaded a couple of the songs you recommended.  I like them.  This band is better than many bands that seem to be popular now.  The singer sounds a little like that guy from The Cure, but the rest of the music is nothing like The Cure.  In the song "Understanding in a Car Crash" the lyrics make reference to a Neil Young song.  "The needle and the damage done."  If they like Neil, they\'re ok in my book.

Here\'s one for you folks.  It\'s a band I just found and they\'ve got one album that I dig a lot.

Band: Opeth
Album: Still Life

If you\'re going to download a song from like Audiogalaxy or whatever, I recommend listening to the song Godhead\'s Lament so you can get right to the meat and potatoes of why I dig them.  If I was forced to describe this music, I\'d call it a creepy mix of Death Metal and the Moody Blues.

Hope you like it.

Dolby, you\'re the man.  I didn\'t find "Godhead\'s Lament" but I downloaded "Benighted" and "Face of Melinda" and this sh1t kicks ass.  Excellent musicianship.  I\'m going to buy one of their records soon.

I wish I could contribute something here, but I\'m not sure if any of you would like what I like.  Actually I like so many different kinds of music you probably wouldn\'t believe it.

I do have an idea to try:  Download some songs by Buckethead.  Try the songs "Night of the Slunk" or "Nun Chuka Kata" or "Machete" or something from one of the bands he\'s been in, like Praxis or Cobra Strike.  Good luck finding it... heh heh.

I don\'t want to sound like Mr. Knowitall over here, but yes, Opeth kicks a$$. I have all their albums. I\'f I had to rank them, I\'d probably put them like this:

1. Still Life
2. Blackwater Park
3. Morningrise
4. My arms Your Hearse
5. Orchid

Also, they have a new album on the way which will be two CDs. One will be soft and the other will be hard. I can\'t wait, Good Stuff. :)

Hey Core, those songs are great but really, try to find Godhead\'s Lament.  It\'s just one of those songs that sounds BETTER REALLY LOUD!!!  I can\'t get enough of this album and that song in particular.

OPETH RULZ!

OK Dolby & Delphian, I\'m sorry but I might have to revise my Opeth comments slightly.  I just bought Still Life, and while I love the melodies, lyrics, and recording quality, I have a small problem with the vocals.  It seems that Mikael Akerfeldt sings in at least two different styles.  One is the normal human voice I heard on "Benighted" and "Face of Melinda."  The other is that kind of scratchy raw "devil" voice that I\'ve heard in many other death metal bands and such.  I don\'t think I can get used to it.  Even when I\'m loving the guitar leads, that voice comes in and just seems to ruin the song for me.

In spite of that, I still think the CD was well worth it.  My question is:  Did Opeth record other songs using the normal human voice?  That man has such an awesome voice when singing in a traditional manner.  They remind me of the Galactic Cowboys from the prime of their career, and believe me that is HIGH HIGH praise.  I would seriously buy every one of their albums if I knew they weren\'t all recorded with the devil voice.  These guys are great musicians, but I have no idea how to get over the vocals.

Thanks for the help!

Well, awhile back I went through a really big death metal/growling vocals stage in my music listening, and when I got out of that, I actually found it hard to listen to regular clean vocals again. I eventually got through it though. Maybe you just need some more time to let the music settle in your mind? I\'ve always admired Mikael for his incredible vocal range. In fact, good growling vocals are actually really hard to do, just like good clean vocals, unless of course if you\'re a natural. Clean vocals just can\'t properly portray the angry and dark emotions in many of opeth\'s songs. But on songs like Face of Melinda, which are sad and tragic, they fit perfectly. Just my take.

Oh, and to answer your question, most Opeth songs feature the growling vocals with occasional clean vocal breaks dispersed throughout. Off the top of my head, I think there is only one other song of their\'s that has only clean vocals. Track 3 off of Blackwater Park (I forget the bloody name of it).

I recenlty downloaded Arch Enemy - Angelclaw at someones recomendation, merely to try to be more diverse. I was kinda liking it for the first minute and then the guy starts growling. It really put me off, I couldn\'t get into it. Oh well, each to their own.
