When it comes to Electronics Boutique, GameCube is lagging in third."
"Last year, Capcom announced that Mikami’s popular Resident Evil games would only be released for GameCube. That announcement was made a few days before GameCube’s disappointing Japanese launch last September. As an artist, Mikami may like the way his games look on GameCube, but executives at Capcom watch the bottom line. “If Nintendo cannot get its numbers up, particularly in Japan, we may need to reconsider keeping Resident Evil exclusive to GameCube,” ,” Gardner recently admitted in a recent interview with MSNBC.com."
"If you look at GameCube right now, it’s doing okay, but nothing like I might have hoped… and any problems GameCube has had in Japan have been without the challenge of Xbox entering the marketplace"
"The only one who is trailing in mindshare is Nintendo"
"Nintendo is re-thinking the cel-shaded version of The Legend of Zelda that was unveiled last August at its Spaceworld trade show"
" I cannot share the specific number publicly, but the amount of awareness that we have for Xbox is significantly higher than it is for GameCube. "
Hmmmmm........RE may be appears somewhere else afterall. But i thought capcom was in a contract with nintendo but i could be wrong.
:)

I really do hope they trash that cel shaded crap they call Zelda...Zelda on N64 sold millions of copies, why mess with a winning formula?
Nintendo will grab more market share...Miyamoto even stated that the big games are set to come out Fall 2002 and that will be their time to shine...I know I\'ll be picking one up when Metroid is out...
-
so GC owners have to wait 8 months to play zelda or mario?
so lame, no wonder thier in 3rd place
-
It makes me wonder what Nintendo\'s been doing...all their big titles in late 2002, perfect dark perhaps pushed back to 2004?? That is lame...

nintendo have shown time and time again that they dont like to stick to the same ol\' winning formula, they like to innovate and experiemtn and mix it up, particularly Miyamoto...
something like this is evident with the fact that Rare gave away the Bond license because they didnt want to be contricted to the movie...
but i expect that they didnt think the backlash would be so bad, hence, they are re-thinking their strategy

no...nintendo need a stellar name franchise to be released NOW waiting 8 months as mm stated is pathetic and they have no chance of getting a decent market share unless they do some killer marketing and start pumping our third party titles...because their first party and second party isnt doing jack **** right now..

Then why does Mario Sunshine(cringe) look like Mario 64 on steroids?
Star Fox Adventures and Eternal Darkness are supposedly coming out in March...these will probably be their next big thing...
Nintendo hasn\'t had much 3rd party support since the Snes days...
-
yeah, cause they raped the 3rd party developers on thier proprietary medium royalties. same with Gamecube. why do you think they use the 8cm disks? so the developers have to buy them from nintendo.

because currently no one has any good ideas as to the direction that the platform genre can go in, Mario and Jak & Daxter (i dont care what anyone says) are the pinnacle and peak of the genre, and unless it is radically redesigned Mario isnt going no where
i\'d still like to see him go back into 2D, 3D is teh sukk!!!11!!!1!!

they are not in the same vain as Zelda and Perfect Dark
Ps2 has MGS2 and Final Fantasy, the two stellar system seller series for all gamers, and they have helped the PS2 sell BIG TIME...thats what GC needs...

of course...and look where its gotten them...thats why they need to get their in house developement teams cranking or they will have to hit the road (jack (they wont be coming back no more no more no more no more))

and approximately how long was it after PS2\'s launch was it these "stellar" titles came out?

I think Zelda is right up their in the adventure category...it was a proven formula for success (speaking in terms of game sales). I could have maybe seen a side quest or something like that going cel shaded, but not GC\'s killer app...

difference is...PS2 didnt need them then, GC does..
-
The point is that Nintendo happens to do well without the 3rd party support. Their inhouse developement is pure gold (depends on who you speak too) and their games are usually must haves...
Like I said, give it time...
-
there was a point? ;)
yah, they do reasonably well on pretty much in-house alone...reasonably
but they are not, and will not do well unless.. ^^^see points above
their in-house is not doing enough currently to compete against too powerhouse machines such as XBox and PS2...and at the moment, its looking disastrous for them especially with their most stellar titles so far away..and still a severe lack of third party support <<<--- t\'was my point :)

Read the actual article. A lot of it was left out in the topic post. It says something about how, luckily for Capcom, GC sales are picking up in Japan.
-
But you also must see that they are not aiming for the same demographic as MS or Sony. Nintendo doesn\'t have any "competition." It almost seems as they are on their own platueu of sorts...I think people will see the games once they start coming out and start sending some love Nintendo\'s way;)

I still think it\'s trash that the RE series is GC only...Knowing Capcom, it won\'t hold for long anyway...

im willing to bet most people that have bought it so far have been gamers of the \'mature\' age...plus i dont think they are aiming soley on the \'kiddie\' market, but the entire spectrum of ages in their demographic...remember, an adult can play a kiddie game and enjoy it...chances are young children wont like an adult game as much (or they wont be able to play it (KingPin for example ;))) if they were aiming soley for kids, then Rare would not be ANYTHING like they are...they are aiming for the entire demographic...
I still think it\'s trash that the RE series is GC only...Knowing Capcom, it won\'t hold for long anyway...
aye, t\'would only be a limitted time exclusivity contract anyway...as it stands they are only getting 2 of these \'exclusive\' resident evils, and remakes of Resident Evil\'s on other consoles
another point...if Nintendo are so focused on they kiddie demographic...why did they try and secure the Resident Evil series?? i highly doubt the head honche at Capcom thought "hey, lets put our darkest most profitable series, on a machine aimed at children"...Capcom would have been propositioned (;)) by Nintendo for the rights..
-
I shouldn\'t have used the word, demographic...it really didn\'t apply to what I was trying to get across... sorry.
I was trying to emphasize more on the no competition thing...Nintendo gamers are a very loyal bunch and will no doubt show up more and more as Nintendo\'s classics are revived...Myself, I\'m waiting for Starfox, Banjo-Kazooie 3, Donkey Kong, Killer Instint 3 (rumored), Perfect Dark, Metroid...and I\'m 20. So I really don\'t want to argue the whole "kiddie" thing...

It\'s a vain attempt to "prove" they aren\'t kiddie. Just like Conker ( I love that game)....
Na, I think it was somewhat a good move for Nintendo as they try to appeal to a wider demographic and the "mature" gamer. Eternal Darkness, Too Human, Resident Evil, Perfect Dark...
I really didn\'t mean to argue this from a demographic standpoint...so take that out of perspective...
-
its a deal *thumbs up*
so you believe what?? they are trying to appeal to their loyalist fans?
-
Of course...why esle would their be 80 mario games:P
-
well, if you had have just said so in the first place you could have saved a lot of text! my wrists are sore (although thats for a whole other reason)...bastard
i dont think so much they are targetting soley loyalist fans...thats possible reasoning for the Cell Shaded Link though... you must admit, he is much more like his previous more kiddie incarnations from the likes of LttP, unfortunately they didnt count on their fans, ones who grew up with the series, and ones who started on OoT growing so attached to the OoT and MM depictions (not to mention how awe-insprired and hope filled they were all about the tech demo...let down even more because of that thing)..hence their re-thinking of the game, which means it would take EVEN LONGER to come out and they need it for they are not soley appealing to ther loyal fans as shown in their \'vain\' attempts to destroy their kiddie image and to appeal to the common gamer..
vain or not, it is still an attempt to attract more people cheaply and without having to put out a variety of games from the likes of 3rd party...ugh, im going over old points now... and forgotten my train of thought
they are a business out to make money...and right now...they are doing a terrible job of it (at least as far as the GC is concerned, gameboy will always put food on the table)

Mario is the backbone of the company, along with some other great franchises that alot have grown up with. While I don\'t think they are soley appealing to their loyalist, I do believe they make up a big portion of their user base...my 2 cents.
I agree with your post though...

and on that note, the discussion ends (at least for me, off to bed...lousy australian times, grr)
nice posting with ya

I was fixing to say the same thing...it was starting to swirve into other topics...better we end it here.
Good debate...see ya

Marketing. That\'s a big key, here. I think Nintendo\'s ads are failing miserably. They can\'t create interest in the games.
In fact, as Australia prepares for the Xbox/GCN combo, Xbox is advertised all over including X\'s on the sidewalks while no one has heard of Gamecube.
Nintendo needs to spend some of that hard-earned cash on advertising if it hopes to sell more product than it already does (which is almost debatable itself).

J&D was good but it is not the pinicle. Come on, without Crash, Sonic and Mario, J&D wouldn\'t even exist. J&D, while a fun game, borrowed so heavily from the big 3, and innovated very little.
I\'m sorry, but you can not say J&D and Mario in the same sentence.

They were referring to when SSBM was released, the sales picked up. But now, Nintendo is back into the sales slump that they have been in more often than they would like. This is the latest sales chart from famitsu:
Jan 14th-20th
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.famitsu.com%2Fgame%2Fhard%2F2002%2F02%2F01%2Fimg%2Fbou_.gif&hash=5e8ee59bd24f4ecbb63a55ed391a94bff7a8f1f9)
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.famitsu.com%2Fgame%2Fhard%2F2002%2F02%2F01%2Fimg%2Fen_.gif&hash=c5faa0f1f2647e697831d1582d1942055271c6d9)
And this is from the week before that week:
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.famitsu.com%2Fgame%2Fhard%2F2002%2F01%2F25%2Fimg%2Fbou_.gif&hash=3000ccdddf6c18e59b4967c491b7ff309e8a25a4)
As you can see, it\'s just getting worse and worse for Nintendo, and the PS2 is consistantly selling 3-4 times as much as the NGC. The next few weeks the PS2 sales will probably be up even more because of VF4, then Xenosaga. And the NGC sales will probably be even worse do to the lack of any good software coming out for the next few months. To tell you the truth, it wouldn\'t surprise me if the Xbox surpasses the NGC\'s total console sales within it\'s first couple of months after launch.
-
this could be REALLY bad for nintendo
they are in a rush to pump games out, whether they be "completed" or not
-
I know GameCube can pump out come crazy looking games, they just got to get cracking on things soon. =)

i walked into Electronics Boutique the other day to see a huge wall dedicated to Xbox (only the centre of it had any software/hardware apparell, but the rest were just posters of the XBox logo)...then i was looking through the store and came across this small corner... about a square yard with a picture of a gamecube, 6 game boxes (one box for each game) and a small sign saying "pre-order your gamecube now"
great going Nintendo

did i ever mention its innovativew qualities?? did i ever say ""hey...Jak & Daxter is the most innovative game ever" or "Hey, Jak & Daxter revolutionised the industry" NO so shut up
Mario = Common Agreed Upon Best Platformer ever
Jak & Daxter = Cliche\'d to death, and (without getting specific) doesnt offer anything new, but it has just so finely tuned (the realization of the entire world is a HUGE factor to the gameplay and is why i would put it ahead of Mario64) it doesnt offer much new over other platformers, but everything is just perfect and the developers put in so much effort (and that is obvious) and basically...if you play J&D you cant go back to say..oh..i dunno...Gex the Gekko...or Spyro the Dragon
plus the fact its the only 3D platformer ive ever liked, which means M64 and and 3D sonic games are pretty much **** in my book (3D ruined the genre) i was just paying my respect to Mario

heh, Nintendo will never put out an incomplete game.. too many delays.. if they wanted to put out an incomplete game, they should just put the game out for its originally planned release date..
-
For that reason alone it is not the pinacle. If they can\'t come up with one original idea, innovate a single thing, then it is not the best. Fact of the matter is that game isn\'t possible without every decent platformer that came before it.
Halflife is the pinicle of FPSs because they inserted fresh ideas into a stale genre and made it great again. J&D, while a good game in its own right, didn\'t. They made the FPS equivalent of Quake 4, and nothing more.
It is a good game to be sure, and I did enjoy it, but the imitation is never as good as the original because you get the feeling that you\'ve been there before.
Bob, why do you get so angry, if you can\'t play nice like a big kid maybe you should stay in the gated playground with smaller kids. I wouldn\'t want to hurt your feelings again.
-
Watchdog...im not angry at all dude...if it comes across that way, then i apologize, im being very mellow :) i like to swear and inult sometimes just for kicks
ok, you name me one platformer since Mario64 that has innovated?? there are none
and to say J&D has not innovated is pretty stupid in itself... the realization of the entire world adds SO much to the platformers gameplay, which puts it SOOO far ahead of oither games, yoiu dont just warp to one gate do your missions and come back, you can be doing as many missions as you want at once and the game is much less tedious than the standard Mario games
have you played it? (seriously)
plus its way of story telling is fantastic, the animations are so superb, sure this isnt innovative for the gameplay, but it literally does have better animations than top of the line CD movies/cartoons, and it is extremely innovative by way of story telling
by pinacle i meant you will not play a better Platformer than J&D...and i speak the truth...
-
Yeah I played it over Christmas. It is still a platformer without new gameplay elements. I was impressed by the things you mentioned (and the graphics!), but it was the same old tricks.
No, I can\'t name a better platformer (Rayman was good though, just as I\'d say for it\'s time), but any Mario game is better and they were all first. I\'m sure Mario Sunshine (hate that title) will be better, because it\'ll look at platformers differently and give gamers something new.
J&D hasn\'t been a big hit--despite aggressive advertising--because people see it and think it\'s a clone--and that isn\'t far from the truth.
People are losing interest in platformers because it is becoming a stale genre. You don\'t need a mascot anymore to sell a console. J&D for the PSX at launch would have blown everyone away. It would have been a groundbreaking title, it would have changed everything. Now, it\'s just another title to add to the pile of "me too" games. It is certainly at the top of the pile, but that\'s it.
To be the best you have to beat the best, and by copying and taking no risks at all, you\'ll never do that.
-
agreed
but my point still stands
-
LOL Bob, and what was that again?
-
by pinacle i meant you will not play a better Platformer than J&D...and i speak the truth...
-
I would say Mario. heh
But my whole point is that J&D will cease to be anything the next time someone decides to copy every good idea Mario et. al. ever had.
I think Munch, while probably not as full out fun as J&D, gets points for originality and humor. While still firmly planted in Mario\'s fundamentals, it deviates far more and takes chances, some fail, but some come off great. It\'s a refreshing change.
All things considered J&D is a better game, but Munch is a daring effort and should get just as much praise for trying to take the genre away from the model.
I consider Munch a greater achievement, but an inferior game. The designers of Munch had vision, the designers of J&D had Platformers for Dummies. That\'s really my only major complaint about the game.

Liar .......
you just said it .

Nintendo needs to pump out more games. I don\'t know what to say about nintendo. I find it interesting that more and more of the kids you would think that fall in the age category of nintendo gamecube owners because nintendo did announce they where going after the lesser of age group. But it\'s interestiiing to see the kid\'s they consider there market buying xbox\'s and ps2\'s.
My little cousin just bought an xbox and he is 9 and he got halo. But the entire 911 and the economy was already in a recession so that could be hurting nintendo as well. I expect things to pick up for them as they get better games on shelves.

Watchdog would make a great mod...
But I think he ruined his chances when called mm a troll...

Bob would make a great mod :fro:

Heh, I doubt anyone would make me a mod--I have very little patience for trolls and mindless system bashing. And you know what they say: absolute power corrupts. :vader:
Besides the existing mods do a great job around here, and what they don\'t take care off the strong community here does--most of the riff-raff don\'t last long.
And I don\'t really consider mm a troll, his behaviour was trollish for about a week or so, but I still think most of it was just him having a little fun at our expense.

im a devil\'s advocate [like Eik], which isnt far from a troll, but the distinction is there nonetheless

Well it doesn\'t really bother me this news. I mean im not a fanboy thus I don\'t care about one companies success or falure. I mean fair enough I like Nintendo, i\'ve been a gamer since the nes, but with their last console efforts (n64, and not releasing anything after snes for ages) they didn\'t look too strong.
Even now the Gamecube is suffering from the same faults as the N64.
If Nintendo can turn it around then fair enough but if they can\'t it leaves the field open for the X-Box and PS2 to battle it out. Either way we are going to get great games. :)
Although I hope Nintendo can turn the sales of their machine around.
