Title: first 2 disk game
Post by: Troglodyte on February 06, 2002, 08:32:41 AM
Capcom of Japan recently announced the final release information for their upcoming GameCube remake of Biohazard. The game will ship on March 22nd in Japan, and will be spread over two discs, becoming first GameCube game to do so.

(from http://www.thegia.com)

Does the PS2 have any 2 disk games out?  How \'bout the box?

I\'m not sure if they have any existing double disk games out presently, but I heard that Xenosaga was going to be. Besides, DVD\'s hold a few gig.(@3 gig/6 gig if double layered) anyway. I think that Gamecubes disks only hold 1.5 gig. That means, to house the grafix seen so far in "Res. Evil", you might need two disks. In my own oppinion, one disk is better, unless it means bigger games, and a more in depth story as well as grafix.

well xenogears will be a dual layer dvd - so i guess you could say it was a two disk game

but you have to remember GC discs dont hold as much as the PS2 and Xbox

also all of xbox games are on dual discs i believe but i dont think any games have used the second layer so to speak

How does dual layer == two disk game?  It\'s just a bigger DVD, about 6 times bigger than the NGC disk.

IMO, Nintendo limited themselves by choosing a smaller, inferior storage, er, thingy.  We will never see a Gran Turismo type game with hundreds of cars and lots of detailed tracks on the NGC do to Nintendo\'s decision to "do their own thang" again.  What happened to the innovative Nintendo I once knew?

they choose those 1.5 disks cause they are proprietary which means they charge developers for them

just like using carts, they shoot themselves in the foot

well from my undetstanding a lot of sites i have seen this is the way it branhces out on capacity

Data Capacity:

DVD: 4.7 GB (single layer)
8.5 GB (dual layer)
9.4 GB (single layer, double-sided)
17 GB (dual layer, double-sided)
CD: 748 MB (Mode 2)
656 MB (Mode 1)

and if you ask me the dual layers arent exactly 2 times the size but they are about that so its pretty much 2 dvds

so it seems to me that it would be like having two dvd game

am i right or am i just blind about something becuase i know im not the smartest guy in the world?

But if a game is on 2 DVDs you would have to store a lot of same game data on both DVDs (the game engine itself, main character models/sounds/textures, characters/monsters that will appear through out the game, etc.).  But when it\'s only one dual Layered DVD, that game data only needs to be loaded on the DVD one time, taking up even less space.  So if RE was on 1 disk instead of 2, it would actually take up less space.

So, er, what\'s my point?  Oh yeah, having a double layered DVD game is not the same as having a 2 DVD game.

heh i try mm

anyway ironfst i was think he was just trying to say that if there were gonna be 2 dvd games because of all the memory the game would take up would be pretty amazing and al because well 8 gigs is a lot to say the least

but yea i do understand what you are saying about the difference withthe loading and stuff for the disks - its like how each disk of ff7 on psx had to contain the worlds and stuff from the other disks and what not and then add on here and there

hence the reason for so many of those things

Uh. . . I didn\'t really think too much about memory, \'cept that a smaller disk=less memory.  I guess I\'m more concerned with the physical action of swapping disks.  Physically having two disks just makes the game seem like there was extra effort to make the game so good, they had to put it on multiple disks.  i.e. FF.

I think it\'s a bad move by N too.  They are control freaks and it will put them right out of the mass market if they keep it up because already devs are pissed at them.

"Xenosaga", not a double disk! One DVD - double sided!?  Man that ticks me off! That will teach me to listen to that freakin purple midget in the cubical down the hall (that\'s not the first time he\'s led me astray!)

dual layer not dual disk - dual disks are larger

and whats wrong with that i mean two disks doesnt mean anything really - still bout the same amount of info if not more on the disk because of space used

I didn\'t mean that I was angry about the disk, I\'m piping mad about that frickin\' midget that gets his facts all skrewed up and then makes me look like I don\'t know what the heck I\'m talkin\' about! He is gonna pay this time!

sorry for the confusion...I think the less disks the better too.
