Some of you are whacked and don\'t like widescreen movies in their correct aspect ratio. Apparently Blockbuster is bowing to you freaks and is limiting their supply of widescreen and adding to their stock of Pan and Scan movies on DVD.
Please go here and sign this petition to tell Blockbuster that we want widescreen still on the shelves....
They are over 20000 signatures. Please sign it. It will take you less than 15 seconds.

i have to agree with u, and i signed the petition. when will people learn, democracy doesn\'t work!
-
bah, 90% of my customers at BBV complain about "widescreen" and how it cuts the top and bottom off of the picture
ignorance is bliss
i want to smack the crap out of every single one of them
the widescreen people [me] are a VERY small percentage of thier customer base

just like me and my *family guy* petition. :(

The worst is that us (smart) widescreeners have to pay more to get widescreen, when it should really be cheaper! Often it only comes with special editions and stuff, it\'s very irritating.
I had to pay $20 more to get the widescreen box set of StarWars SE, back on VHS all those years ago.
-
I think I might sign the petition (I\'ve seen this floating around the home theater forums) but I\'m not sure whether it\'s worthwhile. Blockbuster is such a big corporation, I don\'t think they\'d give a damn about 20,000 signatures. I have been boycotting BB for years now, and I\'ll never give them a cent of my money for anything.
The Blockbuster rise to power is the main reason why thousands of small community video stores were driven out of business in the 90\'s. Now due to an odd loophole in the agreement reached between the MPAA and the video retailers back in the 80\'s, DVD rentals are not covered under the same royalty agreement that VHS cassettes were. For the moment, Blockbuster is reaping a windfall as consumers switch over from VHS to DVD rentals. BB\'s stock did very well in 2001, rising from below $10 to 28.66 per share, while many other consumer entertainment stocks went into the toilet. I choose not to contribute to their coffers. Blockbuster can burn in hell.

I\'m 100% Hollywood Video. Total 16:9 material everywhere. You guys have one of these in your area?
-
Here in Ottawa, Canada, BB trounced Jumbo Video out of business. Their only competition is Roger\'s Video but the nearest one to me is far away. It\'s too bad, Roger\'s ownz BB in every way, bigger stores, keep all the old/rare movies (BB now sells them to make room for 100 mainstream movies a day), and have an enormous DVD collection. If I had 500k to invest, I\'d open a Roger\'s in my area, it\'d own the movie rental biz for a five kilometer radius within a year. :(
-
I don\'t rent movies anymore, I get free movies on my dorm\'s channel, and buy any others I like.
But I went ahead and signed for ya. Letterbox is da bomb!

Yes, I\'ve heard of it, we have them here. I use a local video store called Rocket Video instead. They are much friendlier, and their selection rules over BB or any other chain. The owner is a fan of foreign films, and he has good taste. :)

coredweller, if it wasnt for BBV, we\'de be stuck with mom and pop rental stores that carry 2-3 copies of 100$ new releases [yes they cost that much]. who do you think pushed the gaming industry to allow rentals of games? i dont say this cause im an employee, in fact i really hate my job, but i get paid too much for how little work i actually do. plus how can i argue with 7 free rentals a week. :)
they are just a major corporation doin the best it can to make itself bigger. just like micro$oft, mcdonalds, alcoa, ENRON, etc etc
-
VHS has rental pricing, but DVD does not. IT is very odd that DVDs come out on the market the same time rental VHS does. SO BBV makes a boatload of cash on DVD rentals copared to VHS.
And as far as 20000 signatures not making a difference. Are you freaking nuts. More than likely if you complain about widescreen then you are an enthusiast of movies. so say you spend 5 bucks a month on rentals. That\'s 60 a year. Multiply that by 20,000 and well it\'s early, but I\'m sure you get a pretty big number.
-
20,000 is nothing compared to the overall audience
yes, they reap a windfall for DVD\'s
they pay about 16-17$ for each DVD copy they purchase, BUT this will change eventually
another thiing to remember, VHS tapes last longer than DVD\'s
we dispose of at least 25-30 DVD\'s every month due to carelessness.
"i got it that way" or "it played fine for me, it must have been the person who had it before me" are the most common excuses i hear everyday. people just toss the disks around and after a few times, they become unplayable
i once had some lady drop a case in the drop slot, and upon opening it, i found the disk shattered into several slivers. i proceeded to call here, and she said "it was like that when i got it". if it was possible to reach thru the phone and strangle here, i would have. needless to say, i couldnt charge her for it.
in the end, you might think blockbuster or [insert company here] sucks or they have bad business practices, but in the end, its "we the customers" who suck. not even just at my current job. even when i worked at a restaraunt, i saw morons every day. i\'d see people pluck hair out of thier head, and drop into the last few bites of thier 17$ fettuchine dish, so they wouldnt have to pay for it.
so i rephrase, customers suck and thats why business\' work the way they do
-
I\'m English but I signed the petition as well - we do have Blockbuster video over here as well y\'see. Seeing as at the moment most VHS films are in 4:3 and most DVDs are 16:9 or 22:9, couldn\'t the "widescreen wingers" rent videos and the smart people rent DVDs.
Or as an alternative, why not let the thick people rent DVDs (widescreen) as nomal, but get them to sh*t on the TV screen before watching the film, so as to simulate the pan/scan effect.
Finally, why don\'t blockbuster just tell them to f*** off and buy a widescreen TV!
-
oh yeah, yer english. nevermind then
-
Wow mm, I knew that people could be careless, but I didn\'t think that the majority were careless and stupid. Wait, I did know that; but sometimes if I pretend that most of the world is inhabited by logical people I tend to breathe a little better.
-
humans = dumb animals
need i say more?
-
Let Blockbuster do what they want. They are retards and they provide a service for retards... I would not even be surprised if they start running a short bus service so that people don\'t have to drive there..
I signed you\'re thing. I don\'t rent from blockbuster anyways, every freakin time I go to get a movie they aint got it.. Damn it costs just a little bit more to buy the damn thing....
-
come on now, yer being very ignorant
they provide a service. 90% of VHS new release movies, you CANNOT BUY, cause they cost over 100$. blame the studios, not the rental store. you cant go to a store and buy these vhs movies, like say "fast and the furious". my store alone carries 60 copies of that film. we had over 100 copies of pearl harbor when it came out. my franchise doesnt, BUT all of corporate BBV stores guarantee you get a copy of high profile movies, or YOU GET A FREE RENTAL COUPON for that title on yer next visit. they do this for DVD\'s and some games too. how is that retarded?
they charge roughly 4$ to rent a movie, and they cost a little more than that? try 4x to 5x that much.
they charge 5$ to rent games for 5 days that you can play AND potentially complete instead of paying 50$. how is that bad?
again, im not defending them cause im an employee, but merely because i support the rental industry. they have saved me LOADS of money from purchasing crap games and movies. if it wasnt BBV, then someone else like hollywood would be in thier shoes. would you hate them instead
like i said before, if yer gonna hate on blockbuster video, then you have to hate on EVERY major corporation out there, like Microsoft, pepsi, macdonalds, etc etc
-
Agreed MM I hate all Corporations!!!!! :clown:
Well back in the day when I rented VHS Blockbuster was great..
Now what the hell is VHS again.. I have not watched a VHS tape in a long time... Maybe some underground pr0n I got, but thats about it.. LOL
I hear ya and you make a good argument, I am just basically venting cause of my past experiences with Blockbuster not having what I want. And its not like it was a hard movie to carry, just my luck every time I went they just did not have it. Pissed me off needless to say
But I can hear you about wasting money, cause I just bought Driven, and I ended up almost throwing the movie out the window cause it sucked so bad. Would have been a little bit better off if I rented it.
-
ehhe, you said porn, errr pr0n :)
driven did suck, bad
if it was an old movie, i feel yer pain
im into old samurai films, like "zatoichi" or "lone wolf and cub", or anything with Toshiro Mifune and they dont carry them anymore
blockbuster as a whole is moving away from BSI [basic store inventory]. it costs them more to keep them on the shelf than it does for the 3-4 times a year rental income. i would assume all the major rental companies will follow this practice
another factor is viewer patterns. society is moving away from "classic" filmmaking. they would rather watch "flash in the pan" movies like titanic, armageddon, or pearl harbor than classics like poseiden adventure, 2001, or tora!tora!tora!
its sickening sometimes. the other day we had a box set of "charlie chaplin" films on sale at work, and a black gentleman asked to see it, not knowing what it was. he asked me after a few seconds of puzzlement what it was. i told him a brief summary of who chaplin was and what he did for the film industry as im a big fan of his
"oh, that be that dumb sh1t where they dont be talking and sh1t"
that was his exact response. needless to say, i rolled my eyes and walked away.
or how about when i went to see "life is beautiful" a few years back in the theatre, and watched 3/4 of the people walked out LOUDLY *****ing that they didnt know they "had to read" and that they wanted thier money back.
i SO wanted to slap someone that night
-
Yeah, but you can buy DVDs for 10-18 bucks a piece. Use to be less on the internet. You can then trade them in if you want so you don\'t end up much worse than renting.
-

Just like Kirath said, I hate those corporations TOO!
I understand your point about BBV bringing standardization and a few new features like video game rentals to the market, but they\'ve done a lot more harm than good.
I\'m fortunate that I live in Hollywood where there\'s a huge base of true cinema fans that actually do support the remaining independent neighborhood video stores. I can go to Rocket video a few blocks from where I live and browse their unbelievable collection of Hong Kong action films and imported Wim Wenders films (for example). If I lived in some place like Trailer Hitch, Texas, I\'d be SOL! No independent video stores can survive a market like that with 2-3 Blockbuster retailers within 20 miles.
I know it\'s hopeless to try to stop the homogenization of world culture being brought on by entertainment corporations like BBV, but I can\'t help getting pissed off about it. I\'ll stop complaining now.
-
its not the corps doing it, its the sheep, errr the consumers buying it
-
Guys guys guys. Its just the bottom and tops of movies here, geez. Who honestly cares whether you miss the little bit of extra scenery, and who honestly notices halfway through the movie, "Oh my god! The black bars on this movie are awesome!" Seems like such a trivial thing to be petitioning about.
-
trivial?
widescreen = filmmakers work is shown.
fullscreen = cropped = bastardized

Oh come oooooonnnn  Bastardization? So all those filmakers before DVD\'s were out were just so mad that their extra 3 inches of desert/sky/ocean/wallpaper didnt make it into the home video version? I bet.
-
there have ALWAYS been widescreen VHS films ya know
if u made something, would u like it edited? or presented in its intended format?
its like an artist painting a 4\' x 4\' painting when only 3\' x 3\' will be actually shown
you honestly tell me which version you\'de rather watch
where\'s han?

With a thunderous cry, the sheep have spoken, and the sad oppressed minority who actually know what the hell they\'re talking about are once more dragged down to the lowest common denominator.

Sure you can since it\'s common knowledge that every BB employee physically inspects each disk that they rent out, just as they do when they get it back.... right? You guys do that so people can\'t say "I got it like that" doncha?

they dont inspect every disk, dolby
even i dont. i open the case to make sure that the right disk is in there, AND its in one piece. were far to busy to check the playing side of every disk coming in and going out. its easier to just dispose of them when they get damaged and after two customer complaints

It\'s people like you who deserve to live with your VCR for the rest of your life.
You lose so freaking much with pan and scan it\'s utterly ridiculous. CUts where there aren\'t suppose to be cuts. Stretched people, digital pans, UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT\'s awful.
Crap, I even hate the cropping HBO is doing on their High Definition channel and that is just cropping 2.35x1 to 16X9. Even at that you are losing quite a bit of the image.
-
Well I guess I\'ve learned something today. I can make a post about how women are idiots and not get any negetive feedback, and then I can make a post about how black bars arent a big deal and get freakin slammed for it. Hehe, I love these forums.
-
Cant beat widescreen, maybe they should stop being cheap asses and by a decent TV
