When I read about how the PS3 is supposed to work some questions pop up in my mind. There will be some kind of supercomputers around the world that people connect too. This supercomputer is supposed to be in evry big city and people connect to it and play. There will be no "real games" just digits that you download. But download to what???? My super wild guess is that you will use the PS2 as the controller. The power in the EE will be used only for displaying on your TV what the PS3 is sending to you.
I wounder if this would work?
When you buy the PS3 you get a disc and a 100 mbit ethernet.
That would be cool!!!
Any thoughts about this, I know it sounds crayzy but the ide is pretty cool!

I think the PS3 will just be a box or a portal to the "superserver"..
The games will be streamed to your PS3.. It will be like watching TV.
Mr. Kutaragi has some very crazy visions.. But I like them :)
Although I dont think this will be doable 2005.. Maybe 2010-2015 when broadband will be more common around the world.
(Sony ISP is offering 100Mbit connections in Japan now.. Broadband Company in Sweden is offering 10Mbit-100Mbits right now. I just hope Felia and the others follow as soon as possible.. Fibreoptic cables please!)
I think the PS3 will be a "regular" console just like the PS2.. Housing the Cell processor.
Ken-sans visions will have to wait till 2010-2015 (PS4-PS5)
Kutaragi: Whether CELL would be built in to the game console or not is not an essential matter. Should the era of packaging continue, I guess PlayStation3 and PlayStation4 would be worth a topic to discuss, but what I would like to stress is that the concept of packaging, or box, would disappear in the broadband era....
Broadband era will most likely happen in 2010 or 2015 as I said..

Uh-huh, and my PS2 will do Toy Story graphics!
Not to be rude, but Kutaragi is the king of bullsh!t because of statements like this. Sure, his visions are great, but they are not going to happen anytime soon for a couple reasons. First off, the PS3 will be just what every other console has been. A box with a processor that plays videogames that you buy in a box. There won\'t be any downloading the games from some magical "supercomputer". Infact, correct me if I\'m wrong - but didn\'t Sony promise that the HD would be able to download add-ons to current games for the PS2? Yeah, they did and then they realized that idea wasn\'t viable, so they went back on it. The same will happen with the PS3 and more and likely PS4 and maybe even the PS5, depending on how far broadband connections stretch out by the year 2010-2015. Even then, Sony is talking about redoing the whole market by getting rid of the common way of purchasing things from a place like Wal-Mart. Do you honestly believe a videogame system is going to revise the whole marketplace and how things are sold? I don\'t.
As for this..

Alittle less science fiction and alittle more reality never hurt anyone.
;)

This idea sounds like it would work in Japan, but not here. Not right now, anyway..

Its happening for PCs (All these Operation Flashpoint addons ect).. Why cant it for PS2?
I heard Tomb Raider Next Gen will be episode based..
You buy the first part.. And you\'ll be able to download the next parts.

It won\'t happen. Why? Do you honestly see anyone without a broadband connection downloading episodes for a game? NO! Even then, you are wasting a lot of bandwidth on a game and quite a few places cap bandwidth usage. Not to mention - one of these "episode" games could take up a gig or two on the HD , that most people won\'t even buy.
And I\'m not even going to address the whole issue of charging people to download the episodes / releasing half-ass episodes. Oh and the ease of piracy with that whole downloading episode plan.
-
I agree with L-I-C. This may be where Sony is wanting to head, but the realities of it are too far off to be anything more than Ideas and Dreams. I just hope Sony dosen\'t plan on the technology to be there.. and then a month after launch.. WHOOPS, guess we estimated wrong!
Not to mention that while it may be a good idea in America and Japan in the next 10 years.. the Playstation brand sells world wide. Many of these countries you find the PS2 have trouble keeping their phone lines maintained, let alone sparing the cash to wire the entire country up with a broadband infrastruture anytime soon.
-
Not plausible given current technology.

People without broadband connection?
No.
People with broadband.. Some yes.. (that was what I was talking about)
If its free like the Operation Flahspoint updates it will probably attract alot of people.
And the updates would not have to be that big.. Flashpoint updates are about 40MB I think.. Adds new weapons, vehicles and missions.
Of course there is always going to be piracy..
Tomb Raider Next Gen is said to be episode based... Lets see how many people will download/buy the episodes.

Maybe you missed the point.
Why would developers invest a lot of time and what not , if most people don\'t even have broadband connections? No!
As for the comments about how much they will be size well. Yes, you can add a new level / weapons and what not rather small. When you go making complete episodes the size gets a lot larger.
Then address the fact you have to come up with a pay scheme for all this...It just isn\'t going to happen on a large scale. At most, we\'ll see extra weapons / customers / cars for racing games and even then, I don\'t expect many developers to invest the time for it.

I agree..
Episode based games will not be common..
But when Sony spoke of "addon for games".. I think they were talking about new Cars for GT4 and Twisted Metal Online (I downloaded cars for NFS3), Weapons for Socom and new characters for Tekken 5 ect.
This will be more common as the size is small enough for modem users to download. Plus they will most likely be free..
We will see what happens when the network is finally up and running.. :)

I agree with L-I-C. Because I hate the idea of downloading new episodes, cars, levels and what not. Put everything in the game don\'t add other things for you to have to pay to download online.
I am starting to dislike the idea of online console gaming. It only is fun if your lonely and have enough time on hand to be online playing games that long. I loved the whole broadband idea with xbox. Until now it just seems worthless to me now.

The ps3 will have a neural net processor...it will be a learning computer. :D

All that online stuff brings alot of complexity
with it and complexity comes with complex
problems tenfold. No, I\'m an oldfashioned type
of guy. I want to buy a game on a disc with
all of the game on it, thats\'s it.

Complex things like...?
- Error 404 -file not found!
- Server busy. Please try again laer.
- Too many connections .
- Broken downloads. Nothing more annoying then waiting hours for something and getting cut off by the server or your ISP.
The list goes on and on...Online gaming may happen next generation (it won\'t go full swing this generation) but we won\'t see episode based games for along time and I dread the day we do.

PS3.... LMFAO

npyyz...LMAO!

I don\'t think why the downloadable crap would ever do any good to someone.. Do you have any idea how many ppl are out there who don\'t even have a modem, let alone broadband??
MOST of the European countries do not even have broadband connections for private use (only corporate) and even if they do, they are selling them at ridiculously high prices. So your 40MB is A HELL OF A BIG download for me, and imagine that I\'m in england so the phone lines are ok, what about places like Slovenia, Yugoslavia, the whole Africa continent, even ASIA (apart from Japan/china/Hong Kong etc).
THIS WILL FAIL as sega failed completely with the Online CRAP that the Dreamcast was supposed to offer.
We still need a good 6-7 years for broadband to rule the internet world so that the downloadable packages would be feasible. And you seriously think that the companies will put a lot of effort for something that they will let ppl download for FREE???
Nahhhhh, there\'s nothing like free lunch they said, so it simply won\'t happen. They ARE gonna charge you for ANYTHING thats worth it, and if they don\'t its not gonna be worth charging. And if its not, why should I download it??? Just to have another car in Gran Turismo?? So what?
All in all, the PS3 better be standard PS2/XBOX *******GAMING****** console with no downloadable packages and all.
I would really LOVE to see all those internet freaks out there get a game full of BUGS and having to download a patch, on a saturday night with all the mates around and the webpage would say "sorry mate, the server is full, please try later!"
In any case, if the PS3 does become like the PC games where you have to download 1000 patches before you can actually play the game (oh, and by the way the saved games are NOT compatible with the upgraded version some times) I simply won\'t buy it. But thats just me! :)
-
Agree... for example here in Italy someone is starting to cable towns like Milano. And the price for this service is too high.
But if the price for a broadband connection will be low, who can
say what the gaming_supercomputer access will cost?
Like every big corporation they will free it at starting. When
a good number of people have buy a box (that will do great game only connnected) they will raize the prize.
How much an American pay for a 10Mb connection?
Here will be like 60$ every month. (i hope).
-
Here you can get 10MBit for $23.. (Dont know if they are going to raise the cost when they upgrade to 100Mbit)
My brothers friend pays $17 for 100Mbit.. Its a small ISP.. Pretty stable connection. :)
I pay $33 for 0.5Mbit.. But then I have Swedens most sucky ISP.
-
oooh, 100 MB/sec
/me drools
