After some heavy searching I was able find numbers on the amount of unit sony has sold. To come up with some rough figures on how many units are sold and not shiped. (If you have any number please add them)
Bye October 14 2001 sony had sold 20million ps2 units

The total number of units sold I would say is roughly 25million(or could be more)When you even begin to think of that many sold since the ps2 first hit shelves in japan on 3/2000 the console war seems to be over before it even begins. And the only real contender seems to be xbox.
Which in order for it to surpase ps2. PS2 console sales would have to do a 180. Which you never know ps2 could have reached it\'s peak. I doubt that is going to happen. With this being the beginning of 2002 and with ps2 hear to at least 2005 I don\'t see no console stoping it this generation.

yes, weve been thru this before
and ive stated repeatedly that the PS2 has ALREADY won the "console race". xbox anc gamecube can never hope to match PS2 installed userbase. hell, the PS2 is still selling more than the xbox and GC combined

hmm let me see the PS2 is selling faster than the PSX did over the same amount of time since launch.
and not only that
the PSX managed to see off
the Sega Saturn
The Nintendo 64
and the Dreamcast
Despite being seen as the weaker system....
so yeah i guess that PS2 had already won the "CONSOLE WAR" before it even started..

Yes, the last official chart is about 27,8 millions of PS2 sold in the world. Sony said one year ago that they hoped to sell about 30 million of units before 31th March 2002, and it seems it\'s so close. Many people say the war is not won yet, but not for me. PS2 has won, and that\'s this way.
NGC is not doing well in Japan, the last chart says it has about 17% of the market, and PS2 about 52%. All we know that XBOX won\'t do it very well out of America... I can\'t forget the price of M$´s console in Europe... more than 500€ :D :D Bill is silly if he thinks his console are going to beat Sony.
Anyway, the games do big a console, and at the moment, I enjoy a lot with my "black". Sony has won again, and Nintendo and M$ can only fight for the 2nd position.

PSM puts the PS2 stateside number, Thanksgiving to the end of Dec, at 2.5 million. In excess of 5 million worldwide for that period.
More fun facts to know and tell.
For November and December the the lowley PSone sold 1.1 million units. Chew on that you 128 bit rivals.
# of games playable on NA PS2s- 1400+ (PS2 + 1)
# of games for Japan- 4200 :eek:
I see the GC xbox race as a tortise hare affair (xbox=fuzzy bunny). A ton of fence sitters for Nintendo waiting for the right games before they take the plunge, with the xbox basically having shot its wad until next holiday season. Yeah, yeah, a dump truck load of titles on the road but no monster system sellers.
BTW, Nintendo needs to fire their advertising agency. What they\'re running now is a waste of money.

I still don\'t think it\'s fair to compare a new contender with the PS2.
I think we will have to see how the next generation fairs.
I will agree that the PS2 will be in the lead for a very long time with those kind of numbers with the current crop of consoles.
I can\'t wait to see how Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft try to out do each other in the next round.
It should be good for all of us.

ps1 - second best selling console of ALL time behind the atari 2600
ps2 - 28 million worldwide in under two years and growing exponentially?
after the satisfied user base of ps1 + ps2, the ps3 will be a guaranteed winner
aside from merely giving thier units away, they cant hope to beat sony

MS\' house is made of brick but it seems more like sheet rock with their sales figures compared to the big, bad wolf.

Come on Ace, you needn\'t a crystal ball to know that PS3 will be another winner system. Sony is working hard with the best developers. People know that Sony systems have got the best games, and the best companies work for it. People will buy PS3, and you know, and Nintendo will launch another system 2 years later, when PS3 or whatever is called has sold more than 20 million of systems. And if you read the last news about the processor of PS3... :D :D amazing!

Well, I just don\'t know what will happen. Can I take an educated guess as to what will happen? Yes.
I am just trying to point out that anything can happen. I remember when the Playstation came out, there were many people who stated that how could Sony, a company that knows nothing about video games, put out a console.
Do I think that Sony has the best shot to win? Yup!
And if you read the last news about the processor of PS3...
I hope it lives up to the hype it will generate.

What do you consider early. Was there a actual release date for the PS3? What ever the case may be. PS3 might blow the XBOX out the water.

Well Ray... I dunno about blow them out of the water. But I would like to see a system actually worthy of being an Xbox competitor. Also I lust after a Armored Core on the graphics ability of the Xbox, and well From Software and Agetec are more Sony exclusive developers. Like if someone just ported over the Armored Core Engine, and simply gave it an Xbox capability Graphics makeover, then made it a MMORPG... hehe... ok I\'m getting carried away here. But OMG... AC3 would be badass on a broadband giant "Ravens Nest" or "Merc group" and you take missions and maybe other Pilots take the same mission, only to defend the target your after...
I hope Sony comes out with the PS3 and give Xbox competition, cuz well face it, if Xbox has no REAL competitors, then its never gonna get better. You know Market Economy people, competition is always better for the consumer, or in this case the Gamer!

PS2\'s is on the wave of success right now, but I still feel that it can manage 2nd place in the US.
Maybe I\'m comparing apples to oranges, but the Genesis was beating the SNES in installed base for 3 years or so.. then the SNES stayed alive for 3 years longer and eventually blew the Genesis away overall. Then again, right now there are 3 competitors.. and PS2 has a much larger lead over Xbox/GCN than Genesis did over SNES.
Anyways, my money is on Nintendo for 2nd place.. but Xbox will be very close behind. Or maybe not, considering how the recent "AAA" Xbox games have turned out to be worse than expected.. *cough*
Maybe if Microsoft and company didn\'t hype their games up so much, they wouldn\'t disappoint so much.

I\'ll admit it, I\'m pretty much a Nintendo fan. I like a few games that the PS2 and Xbox have to offer, but I\'m satisfied with my GC and their upcoming line-up of games. I have been playing Nintendo for a while and I don\'t think I could stop myself from buying a Nintendo console (I don\'t have the time to play two consoles). As much as I would like Nintendo to be the sales leader, Sony has an insurmountable lead. Nintendo isn\'t screwing their fans over (them and their second-parties continue to make great games and I don\'t care how many other people play the system that I like), but they\'re definitely screwing themselves over. They don\'t seem to know how to make money. I think Nintendo will come in second (sales-wise) behind Sony with MS coming in at a close third. They have too many loyal fans, like me, to lose that bad.
BTW, please don\'t flame. You don\'t need a crystal ball to see that Sony will "win" in sales. It\'s really common sense.

I don\'t think sony will run through next generation as they did this one. Especially if xbox sells continue to rise this generation and they grab 30% of the market.
PS2-55%
XBOX-30%
GCN-15%
I think xbox would be in prime shape next round to give sony a run for it\'s money. If the numbers come out like that which it looks like it may end up that way. I could even see nintendo losing 5% with the respons they have gotten so far this generation.

this is all just speculation about next generation, but i would say Microsoft would need to buy out some high-profile developers to win next time..

sony product is not as powerful as x box but sony has the killer soft ware there marketing team is top notch killing xbox on so may ways there commercials make you want to buy there x box commercials make you get up and get a snack and pray its over when you get back
