Title: About PSO
Post by: FatalXception on February 16, 2002, 12:31:21 AM
Now, Phantasy Star Online v2 is coming to gamecube and PC, but they will have monthy costs.  So heres a question.  I\'ve held off buying a dreamcast, but these days it\'s just really, really attractive.  If I can get the PSO original with the dreamcast, will the online play still be included with it?  Is it worth buying PSO v2 instead?

I could research this, but I figure others here have already done so.  Besides, now I have a hankering to go plug in my genesis and play some Phantasy Star II (best game ever).

I\'ve been lurking.

**** outta luck?  Is PSO no longer all inclusive?  I already checked around, I can find a DC really cheap, PSO will be about 45 bucks.....

you missed the good times of PSO, some people will tell you otherwise (SonyFan) but, you will get eaten alive on PSO. The hackers on there are not friendly to newbies, and if you get a used DC, make sure PSO was never played on it, or you will have to get your Serial number reset by Sega or clean it with Gameshark.

Good luck though, we can play sometime perhaps.

Heh I had 4 level 100 characters on my 4x VMU. I use to dupe a lot without a GS. SPRAY NEEDLES SUCK!
They are all deleted now.

I gave up once I heard I had to pay for Version 2. :p

I\'m cheap.

Aight, thanks for the info.

I guess I\'ll just wait and get PSO v2 for my PC.  I don\'t really want to have to hook up yet another system to my entertainment center (it\'s already a damn jungle back there)....

If theres one thing that can utterly ruin a game it\'s hacking and cheating, so that\'s that.  (https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fplauder-smilies.de%2Fpcangry.gif&hash=5e41f697b1f639eadb8c6da0184d9b631b6cee5e)

Figures.. I go on vacation and a topic about PSO crops up. Personally, I say get the DC anyhow. There\'s more than enough AAA titles to make it worth your while, and PSO v.1 is only one of them. 5 a month for v.2 isn\'t exactly a ripoff either. If you feel like cheating though, stick with v.1. They don\'t tolerate cheaters in v.2. (Which is why there are still so many v.1 people running around) Most of my buds quit playing, but I\'ve still got a few peeps who are cool as hell to play with. Amy, Nei, Callia, Ankh, Raistlin, Testament, Moonlight (once he gets some shore leave)... If you need some people to play then I\'m almost always up for a game. Too bad PC, NGC, DC, and Xbox versions all have their own seperate servers and users can\'t mingle between systems.

Oh.. don\'t bother asking Altered to play a few rounds with you. He won\'t. He says he will, but leaves you stranded in Oberon with the Terrorists an Hooligan Clans. Hang around me for a little while tho.. and you\'ll learn how to spot & dodge the harmful cheaters.

BTW: If you want to dodge cheaters.. do NOT get the PC version. It\'s only been released in JP so far and it\'s already been hacked to **** and back. DC version 1 is NOTHING compaired to what hackers are going to be able to do on the PC. Besides, you still have to pay 5 a month for it.

I miss PSO...

I haven\'t played in like half a year.

SonyFan...

Did they change something in the PSO server? I tried logging on about 2 months ago and I couldn\'t connect. This was with V1. Do I have to start paying for V1 and upgrade to V2? Help me out here and I might get back into it and look you up sometime.

I think we\'re about to see the advent of PC-based online games that will be MUCH more hackproof than they have ever been.  Developers are finally getting wise to the danger hacking is posing to their revenue.  Third parties have already developed some interesting solutions for Counter-Strike that might even make me resume playing that game again.  I predict that Team Fortress 2, if it ever comes out, will be virtually hackproof.  Other franchises will have to start taking an interest, or they\'ll be left behind.  Time will tell.

Ashford, you probably just logged on at a bad time. Sega often takes the servers down to do maintinence and add more quests. Sometimes this can last a mere 20 minuites up to 2 days. You might also be having problems with your ISP. I don\'t know how to solve that one.. but if you were able to log on before, I don\'t see why you wouldn\'t be able to now. PSO v.1 is still totally free of all charges. Only with v.2 and the PC/Xbox/NGC versions will you have to pay to play.

Coredweller. Cheating will never be stopped. They can make it very difficult in some cases.. but the hacking community is by far larger and just as talented as those who who make the security software. PSO for the PC is already proven to be hackable. They\'re not going to rewrite the entire games code just for the US and EU releases. Same with Xbox and NGC\'s versions. Sorry.. but it\'s too late for PSO. Least with the PC version you can download patches and workarounds. They\'ll need that extra edge since PC hackers have a lot better tools at their disposal than Gamesharks & Codebreakers.

I think we\'re going to see more and more developers bring forth anti-hacking technology much like the anti-virus applications that have been around for years.  Hack-checking modules in the games will scan your hard drive for hacks based on weekly-updated hack profiles just like anti virus software.  The hack checkers will have to pass encrypted keys to the server to certify that the PC is hack free.  It will be sort of like an integrated, beefed up version of Punkbuster.  Sure, nothing is absolutely completely hackproof, but it is possible to make it so difficult that only a minute number of programmers will have the skills and time to crack it.  Any hacker successes will be short lived, as they\'re countered by the next hack data file, or patch.  Few hackers will be willing to throw away that kind of time on a hack that will be nullified in 2-3 weeks at most.  I remain optimistic. :)

I think I have a better idea.  Now, I\'m not going to say that I know allot because I don\'t.  I don\'t major in Computer Science.  I major in Electrical Engineering Technology.  I think they may be able to force feed an "ok" signal directly to the server.  But, if you keep info such as how much health you have and other important game data on a server, rather than on the console, the hacker will have to hack into the server not the cosnole that they are siting right next to. The amont of health you have and stuff would be sent to.  You would not send any such data to the server.  The server would keep up with how many times you have been hit and how much health you have.

I would think it\'s easier to network your Dreamcast up to your PC so that they\'re sharing the same internet connection, then write a proggy which scans the incomming data packets for irregular data. Then have a filter system which either disconnects you or drops harmful data packets before they even reach your DC. They should also have a nice "Ignore User" feature which when selected, blocks all incomming packets from a certain IP. That\'s just my idea though.

I think I\'m gonna rejoin the PSO fun again but I only have V1. You still play? What ship and block are you usually on? I\'ll try looking you up and maybe we can hook up for a game.

Oh wow I missed out on this too!!!  I have had a DC since launch and have never played PSO.  I have a couple of questions for those that have and still are playing.

If I get V1 is it free?  I think someone said it was, but I am double checking.

What service do you use to connect to the internet?  I remember Seganet, but I know its no longer around.  Do I have to sign up with another ISP just get my DC online?

Thanks in advance.

People keep on asking if a console is worth getting or not.  It does, and will always depend on your taste in games.  Some people such as Alterd loved the Dreamcast.  I for one wish I had never bought it.  ESPECIALLY not at the 200 dollar price tag.  Then agian, you might love it.  It all depends on what games you like.  Take a look at what they have.  If ask me, back in the day of the Genesis Sega was allot better than they are now.

According to SonyFan, yes, it is still free for V1. But beware of hackers and cheaters as they will totally piss you off. My advice is to play with people you know. If you\'re new, play with someone from this board or some trusted PSO board. I can assure you that I don\'t cheat or hack. Probably SonyFan and Altered, as well,  although I can\'t say for sure. ;)

I can tell you from experience that a hacker totally ruins the game for you. My beloved Lvl 80 FOnewearl was killed when a hacker got a hold of her.

:crying:

SonyFan, lets hook up for a game.

Oh, and if you currently use a dial-up ISP, you can probably use it for PSO. A good choice would be EarthLink or AT&T WorldNet.

Post by: SonyFan on March 06, 2002, 02:31:28 PM
Well hey, if you still v.1 then that\'s fine. My Hunter Licence ran out and I haven\'t really had the motivation to go back lately. All my GOOD characters and cards were transfered to v.2, but I may start up a new v.1 character just for playing with the people on this board. All my other friends are over lvl 100 so I don\'t get a chance to game with them much anymore anyhow.

I\'m usually in the last two lobbys of Puck and Titania. If you can\'t find me there, I\'ll probably be in Ariel 1-1 or Umbriel 5-1. Since I don\'t play too much anymore it might be hard tracking me down. How about this, if anyone wants my card then meet me in JP ship Ananke 9-1 at midnight CST tonight. Dunno what character I\'ll be yet, but that ship\'s almost always deserted so I\'ll probly be the only other one there.

Oh, and yeah. v.1 is still free. Any Dialup ISP you have should work fine. I\'ve heard of some problems with v.2 and certain IP\'s, but if you\'re v.1 then don\'t worry about it. Just use the same one you use for your PC.

BTW: Make a new character if you wanna game. I\'m going to be starting out fresh at lvl 1, so hopefully by the time he/she\'s lvl 100 I\'ll be back to v.2 and I can convert.

Well noone showed up (big surprise there! ) I\'m gonna stick around for another hour or hour & a half. My character is a white lvl 1 RAcaseal named Akoshia. If I\'m not in the lobby, I\'ll be in a game. Still Ananke 9-1, and the password will be my username here.. SonyFan.

L8ter.

Nope, I didn\'t show up cause I don\'t check this board at home.

By the way, I finally bought V2 and am now converted. I\'ll try to look for you but remember that I\'m in the East so you might come on too late for me.

I dunno man, that\'s a bad time for me. I\'ll probly be able to meet up with you there to exchange cards, but I probly won\'t have the time to play a game until around 11 to 11:30 Eastern. After that, I\'m clear all night.  Congrats on getting v.2. I need to import the EU v.2 so that I don\'t have to pay for the service. Either that or I just need to find someone with a valid credit card who can get me hooked up.

BTW: What\'s your characters Class, Name, and Color so it\'s easier to find you? Are you going to start out at lvl 1? Akohsia is up to lvl 7 or 8.. so if you wanna lvl up a bit then go ahead. Sorry, but I got bored last night.

Altered, excuses.. excuses.. :p If you have the first version of the DC browser, it shouldn\'t be too hard to reset your DC BIOS. If you have a GameShark, you can use that to reset them also. Also, if either of you have QuakeIIIArena or Alien Front Online, I can meet up with you guys there too. I ain\'t too good in Quake since I don\'t have a mouse for my DC... but I\'m not too bad at AFO. Hehehe... I made a General Rank punk who\'d been playin the game for 2 months resort to his gameshark to get some frags in.. and I\'d only played for a day and a half. :D :D :D

Here\'s a hint Ashford.. when trying to meet up with v.1 people, don\'t go into v.2 ONLY lobbys. I spent an hour in Ophelia 15 - 1 waiting for you to start checkin other lobbys and you never showed. Next time, lets meet at Ananke 9-1. There\'s less chance of missing each other, and less chance of RSOD too.

Ha Ha...

Sorry, SonyFan...

I haven\'t played PSO for so long that I forgot all about the lobbies and V2\'s exclusive ones.

Plus, I kept getting d/c so I just gave up.

Ok, since tonight is Friday, I\'ll try to be on Ananke 9-1 at around midnight Eastern.

I\'m a tiny FOnewearl, Black & Purple, and am at Lvl 85. Bit too high for your character but I\'ll play Normal and help you out.

Forget it man.. I give up. This is some stupid fukkin sh*t right here. All access to the JP ships was cut off tonight for some reason.. and I got VK\'d twice trying to find you. Now the memory card with Akoshia on it dosen\'t want to save anything at all. Something like this happens everytime I try to meet up with people from this board.. weither it be you, Altered, or whoever. Fu*k it. I don\'t even care anymore... it\'s not like I\'d be playin much anyhow until I get my HL renewed.

Sides, I don\'t wanna be "holding you back" anyhow. If you wanna meet up on a different online game, my AFO screen name is Sinue and my QuakeIIIArena sceeny is 420LoVe~{TD}~

Yeah, for some reason, the Jap ships disappeared on Friday.

But the weekend, I had such good lag and had a blast.

Man, Ultimate is SO HARD!!!

I can\'t do any damage without techs, even with a hacked weapon.

But its great for leveling up.

Sorry, but I don\'t own AFO or Quake 3.

Title: About PSO

No, I through with v.1. I\'m sick and tired of all the hassles, and I\'ve already seen everything that game has to offer. When I get my HL renewed I\'ll probably be back for awhile to complete some challenge modes, Quests, and to do a few battles.. but that\'s it. Sorry, but I\'ve had my fill of waitin for hours in lobbys for people who never show up, dodging hackers, and having to work around whatever server problems there might be.

It\'s just not worth it anymore.
