Title: My last couple days......
Post by: videoholic on February 21, 2002, 02:17:11 PM
Well, you probably didn\'t notice it, but I haven\'t been here for two days.  Heck, I\'m gone and I see a couple threads about me.  Whatever.  Anyway, I had a very rough couple of days here.

You all probably know that Logan turned one last week.

So therefore he had his 1 year check-up last week and had a Tuberculosis check done.  He came back positive for exposure so he had a chest X-Ray and a blood sample drawn.

We got the chest xray back on Friday and everything looked ok with that in that it wasn’t active.  He didn’t have the disease, he was just exposed to it.

The blood we didn’t get results from until Monday.  On Monday we were told that he had no neutrophils in his blood.  This is what is in white blood cells that fights off disease.  The count should be over 1000.  Below that and you have a chance for sickness.  Below 500 and you are considered at risk because you have virtually no defenses for disease.  Well, Logan’s neutrophil count was 1.  So we had another blood test done on Monday hoping the test was screwed up.  On Tuesday we got the second count back and it was a 4.  So we took him in to the hospital and had all kinds of tests done on both him and us (To test for where he was exposed to TB from).

He had his bone marrow checked and all looks normal.  Apparently he has a virus that knocked his neutrophil count out and left him defenseless.  He’s pumped with antibitotics now and hopefully that count will start to go up.

So after three days in the hospital he is back home, but he can’t go anywhere till his count goes up to normal.  But at least he is home.

It’s been a very stressful few days, but hopefully all will soon be ok.  There isn’t much worse than thinking for 3 days your kid has cancer.  Well I guess there is worse, he could have had it.

I\'ve never felt so much stress in my life.  I have probably said 10 words in the past two days because I had to hold back tears every time.  They always say that you would rather have something happen to yourself than your child.  It\'s so true.

Whoa...

Man, I may just be a newbie, but man, you take all the time you need for your kid. Logan\'s the only priority, and if you gotta go, we\'ll be here, and we\'ll be hopin\' for ya.

See Yuz.

This reminds me of something so sad that took place today.  I broke my leg and went to the hospital, anyways while I was sitting in the waiting room this young father came in w/his baby held in his arms.  The baby wasn\'t showing any signs of breathing, and as far as I know it could\'ve died. It almost made me wanna cry seeing something like that

God, that sucks... I hope he\'ll be ok.  I wish there was more to say, but I\'m kinda speechless right now... a lot has happened recently that has made me realize the world isn\'t as happy and carefree as I used to think it was...

Yea, when your a kid the world seems so simple and carefree, but as u grow up u start to realize the dangers and hurt that may lie ahead

Best of luck to you Vid, and to Logan.  I\'m glad to hear that things are under control at the moment.  It was fortunate that you took him in for that checkup when you did.  When is the next blood test?  I\'m looking forward to hearing some good news from you in the future.  :)

What\'s so amazing is that he is so normal to look at him.  He was the absolute best in the hospital.  He had IVs all pumping through him, he was trapped in his crib for most all of the day and he just hung out and took it in stride.  When I say he is the best baby ever, I\'m not kidding, he is a dream child.

I think the hardest part for us was the bone marrow test.  Watching him go under was awful.  He just looked so helpless.

He gets more blood work done next week.  Then it\'s once a month, but hopefully he won\'t need blood work done.  They just need to check how he is doing with the TB meds....

DUdes, it sucked.  We were in the cancer ward with all the little kids with cancer and it was so hard.  We lost Lona\'s mom a month or so after we got married to cancer and I wish that upon no one..  (No dashes).

My mom has dormant tuberculosis right now, it\'s in her body, just waiting to live and attack her lungs. Thankfully the military requires all family members to be immunized every 4 years, and other doctors never caught it until as of recent. Now she\'s taking these pills everyday that slowly kill it off for about a year, however the pills damage her kidney\'s, thus she can\'t drink.

He took a 3 hour nap when we got home.  He then got up, drank some juice and crashed again.  Man, he\'s had a hell of a past couple days too.

Fingers crossed.

That\'s what we are afraid of.  With his count being so low, he is highly suseptable to menangitis and the like.  He is stuck at home for quite a while until we can get his count back up.

Our county actually brings us our medications and will check on him every two weeks for free.  So at least we got a little good news.

I\'m not at all excited about getting our medical bills.  We are going to owe quite a bit.  And I thought we were broke before.  But at least we are better off than we were a couple days ago.

I always laugh at that pic. He\'s so cute. I\'m glad to hear it wasn\'t serious. I was gone for the past couple days as well. On Wednesday, I had to work on two projects that were due the next day. An essay about Poe and finish up a project for bio. Stressful for me. Thursday, I was playing MGS2 (i\'m hooked).
