what do you think?
-
They got the right to do what they want to, I never really posted there though. I guess they figured people would pay for it, they prolly needed the money for everything.
-
ign forums sux0r anyways
-
Soon enough we will be paying to axcess the site all together.
DAMN THE ECONOMY.
The damn people at IGN are a bunch of greedy bastards. Sure they need money, but what isn\'t on insider is stuffed with more advertisements that it\'s become ridiculous.
Go to Gamespot where you don\'t have to pay to read a friggin review.
-
I hated Insider from the beginnig. . . I\'m not payin\' for nothin\'!
-
IGN suck anyway, they will go under soon. Theres plenty of other sites that give the same and better information for free!.
-
IGN is awesome
easily one of the best places for Videogame news
paying $20 for a years subscription was more then worth it for me
as for other gaming sites
Gamespot has already started to downsize content and you have to pay for premium services
after that all other Gaming sites are 2nd
so lets hear all those weak arguments on why IGN sucks. I\'m in the mood for a hearty laugh
The fact of the matter is IGN never imagined that the IGN Boards would be so popular. In a little over a year, the IGN Boards have gotten over 30 million posts, making it one of the largest, most active entertainment communities on the entire Internet.
All of the posts on the boards cost IGN money in terms of bandwidth expenses. The past two years have seen a rapid decline in online advertising revenue, which was traditionally the largest source of income for Internet websites, and to put it bluntly, none of our advertisers wanted their ad units to run on the boards, so we weren\'t generating any revenue from the boards.
From a purely economic standpoint, we can\'t afford to offer services that lose a lot of money while bringing none in. The only choices were to eliminate the boards altogether or make them subscription only so they would at least break even. We don\'t know if we\'ll make a profit on the boards or not, but at least this way we can keep them going.
.
pretty down to earth reasoning

I don\'t want to pick a fight but you wanted to hear my complaints.
1) IGN has decided to make us pay for everything. Sure $20 doesn\'t seem like a lot, but why pay for what you can get elsewhere.
2)The people at IGN now procrastinate. They will make you wait weeks after a game is out to read a review. And when it is out early, it\'s an "insider exclusive".
3) So they make people around the world pay for service, ok, but still do you need 5 million adds in your face everytime you make a click?
The point is, yes they want money. But they\'ve gone too far. If you have people paying for premium service you should lighten up on the ads. I know putting up a site like that cost a lot of money, but the fact remains, I\'d be happier getting it from somewhere else for free. Even if the reviews/previews/coverage may be slightly better, you can still get what needs to be said, said.
And that my friends, as they say, is that.

They have not gone to far
Youy are not getting the point
They are losing money, and doing whatever it is to survive
Most popular games are reviewed on the day they are released, others take time
Use some intelligence here. Do you know how many people they would have to hire toplay all the games you want reviewed on the very day
IGN has let staff go to help combat tough times
and paying $20 a year for one of THE GREATEST ONLINE GAME SITES ON THE WEB comes out to about 0.05 a day
Sure you can get free news at gamespot
but all other Online News Sites are 2nd rate compared to GS and IGN
and GS is reducing what they offered too
so sign up and support IGN, or don\'t. but in the long run you will miss IGN when E3 comes and TGS

IGN is not obligated to provide a free service.

Nor are we obligated to purchase it. :D
Gamespot serves it\'s purpose and has quality news. How is it that it can survive without forcing people into it\'s premium service?
-
Because they\'re owned by some big ass company, which IGN is not.

I think IGN\'s digging themselves a hole but that\'s just me. They can expect to see the number of viewers to drop drastically. No one\'s gonna pay for that kinda sh*t

Nobody is making you
but this childish crying about it is too funny
how many Game magazines do you buy a year, and you get 1 update every month
IGN provides updates movie downloads, and screenshots pretty much 5 days a week. Yes some are for Insiders only but there are still downloads for free for cheapo\'s like you Billy
IGN\'s news is still free
just the boards and some premium content needs to be purchased, and I still say its worth every penny
If IGN goes down then we are left with one premium gamesite. Like I said all the rest are 2nd rate compared to Gamespot and IGN.
and in case you forget Daily Radar folded up completely. These sites are losing money, so it doesn\'t matter if they lose viewers. They we\'re losing money anyways
Gamespot no longer offers movie downloads, just streams. You have to pay for the premium service at Gamespot
This could just be the beginning of other changes in the how Gamespot operates

I dont know, but IGn has gone downhill in the last couple of months. They rarely update, their reviews seem rubbish to me.
I would be seriously considering Insider if they would show me what insider is all about, perhaps a free 1 day trail?
-
as far as news and screenshots, gamespot aint the only place, you can get those all over the net, so once again, theres no reason to pay for em when they are free.
as far as buying game mags, i dont, i read all i need to know off the net for FREE :) .
and as far as their board goes, outta every 10K posts they have on there 1 is of quality, and the mods are nazi @!&holes, so who would want to go to the place is the question?

thats exactly what i have been thinkning - 20 dollars isnt that bad when you consider you pay that for a mag subscription but ign has been lacking in updates - they take off almost every holiday - even ones i dont get off for at school and work - also they have been pretty half assed about things lately - it might be a lack of news or it just might be they are getting lazy but i think the paying for a forum thing is pretty lame in the least - i mean what happens to all those people that were on the board before this rule was made - are they not allowed into it now
lol looks like Darth Joyda will be making his way back here possibly if thats the case
-
And I am a proud part of the subscribers. As I was unable to subscribe myself, a fellow member paid it for me :) If someone still frequents it, aka, has an insider, my username is Artificial Stupidity.
It\'s a really cool place, IMO.

I agree with what Ddaryl says.
The ad market is ****. IGN needs to get $ to be able to pay their staff, server, badwitdh costs etc.
PSX_j: "They can expect to see the number of viewers to drop drastically"
Well, that should be good for them, why would they want non-paying viewers that only cost them money?
Non-paying customer=bad customer
People need to realise that staff, servers, bandwidth and other stuff isn\'t free, and never will be. Before, all this was paied for with the ad revenu. Not any longer.
Some say: "I can get movies etc from other places for free"
Well, maybe you can that right now, but when the place you get them from becomes too crowded they will probably not be able to pay for the bandwidth which means they will have to charge $ or stop serving movies etc.
Places like that will probably become too crowded when the major players stop offering things for free and people then try new places.
Often when I get PR mails about screenshot and movies there are notes that say:
"Do not link to the movies directly, download them and serve them from your own server".
Guess why?
This site is cool for the moment though, I only need one cheap server, and the little revenu I get from the ads pay for this cheap server. I can\'t pay for staff or stuff like that though... no $.

yeah, its been almost 6 years and i never received a cent
i did it all out of love baby!
although i dig them swede smokes
:)

LOL @ Sublime :D What a coinsidence ;) Yet, I was begged to stay - in such a manner, that a certain member-friend of mine BOUGHT me insider. Wasted 20 bucks on me. And everything that is offered to you as free, should be taken :)
But, fortunately I have time enough to frequent both IGN and Psx2Central. Don\'t worry.
