KojiIto report
i got no 14280.
and a cap
and some gloves
and a collapsable seat (?)
Close to 1,000 people i\'d guesstimate - we were numbers 410-416 in the
"plebs" queue - the "Meet Bill Gates" queue seemed to be full of people
"with contacts"
Different feeling to the Gamecube launch - which was totally dead.
Then again, Aki was the centre of attention for that.
Pre-emptively, the pictures that show up wont be able to show the full
extent of the queues as we were line up a stairwell - stretching up 5
floors.
-
That\'s pretty funny. Pretty pathetic too. Oh well, we\'ll see how popular it is when the sales numbers come out. However, as it was once said, this console "race" is a marathon, not a quick 1 year sprint. We\'ll see how great x-box is a year from now. Even the Dreamcast sold out at launch in Japan, I don\'t see why the X-Box would be any different.

Morning Shinjuku -- It is being begun to move a town. The row report of the usual practice which does not go the salaried worker &OL who goes to a company to contemptuous glance if compelled.
Good morning. The day of Xbox on February 22 done at last. The miserable situation of Shinjuku of midnight is coverage group C (one person) representation 3 ‚‚· CHU which takes charge of Shinjuku at 6:00 in the morning fresh in memory. Is the sequence of a row seen sure enough? Individually, it is ‚³ although not expected at all. Kana which will go also in a sauna early morning if ‚Ü and nobody are. I went out in ‚Á‚Ä and the light feeling. First of all, it went to the YODOBASHI camera and Sofmap of a west entrance.

February 22, Xbox sale that day. Shibuya TSUTAYA had already become a large crowd of people from early morning. The procession which surround Shibuya TSUTAYA with circumference is 300 or more persons. A numbered ticket is distributed from last night, if the countdown event by Microsoft is held, it is, and many mass communications and curious onlookers also gather. Remarkable climax was shown the whole place.
And when it turns around a little 6:00 a.m., chief [ the Microsoft chairman and ] software architect, Mr. Bill Gates, appears. The ring of mass communications was overcome by smiling expression, and it entered into TSUTAYA. Expectation of the user who has stood in a line grows.
And from 6:25, a countdown event starts still more. A specially built stage is established in the first floor of TSUTAYA, and Mr. り appears whether it is the true pan of Mr. Yasuhiko Akasaka who acts as a chairman, and talent in the place where about 100 general visitors came in. then, the culture convenience store club president, Mr. Muneaki Masuda, who manages TSUTAYA -- a stage -- going up -- "-- early in the morning -- since -- such many visitors -- gathering -- I have you -- thank you, it greeted as "
And when turning around 6:30, the special guest, Mr. Bill Gates, appears still more! When the visitor in the hall called as "Mr. Bill Gates" by all the members, it was led to the voice, and Mr. Bill Gates was being [ the thing ] exciting and waiting to appear and to be able to meet you towards the user who gathered "this morning with the steps carried out calmly. It rises early and greets as thank you." It said, "Xbox sale in Japan is the revolution of a video game, and it is such a historical day that you may call it the "mile stone" today."
Then, Mr. YOSHIKI of a musician is to a stage as one more person\'s guest. In the hall is the further climax to an appearance of "Xbox" and the special guest who is "X JAPAN" origin and who does not expect although it was the appearance which connects and comes out X. Mr. YOSHIKI comments about Xbox "Although played now, its recording does not progress and is troubled by favor." Moreover, it touched on that Xbox was 5.1ch surround correspondence, and the comment in character with [ saying "whether music is good" ] a musician were told.
If it continues, Mr. Bill Gates and Mr. YOSHIKI play a match against what in a game! It extracts by performing an EKISHI vision match in the race game "Project Gotham" of Microsoft, and the match of つ抜かれつ is developed. a result -- a slim margin -- Mr. Bill Gates -- winning -- Mr. YOSHIKI -- the valve of defeat by "whether you are a pro truly" Mr. Bill Gates was saying, "Since this game set favorite CD to BGM and played it, was [ possibly ] Mr. YOSHIKI good in playing covering its own CD?"
While carrying out so like this, the needle of a clock will approach still more in 7:00, and countdown will start. The Microsoft managing director, Mr. Hirohisa Oura, who was watching by the stage side till then, and Mr. Ata 親市, the representative director president, also go up to a stage, and they participate in countdown from 10 seconds before. And sale of Xbox began with the call of count zero. The ceremony that the visitor of the first person to arrive is handed in a Xbox main part from Mr. Bill Gates on a stage is also performed, and excitement in the hall is the climax. Moreover, the situation did not have few people who project also on the screen of the TSUTAYA-QFRONT building surface of a wall, stop a leg and are staring at it also in the passerby.
In addition, the user who became the first person to arrive purchases "Xbox Special Edition" and a "JSRF jet set radio future." He who is called a college student living in Yokohama is a thing that the numbered ticket was got from yesterday\'s 6:00 p.m. The question of a coverage group "after Xbox is announced, I am looking forward to it. It was said that the online network game which can play with the man in the world was expected."
This time, it has the influence which performed the promotion centering on Shibuya, and the reaction of the user in today\'s Shibuya TSUTAYA is very best. As long as this is seen, it is said that Xbox was able to have a good start. Anyway, new hard Xbox to which Microsoft raises and sends out the aggregate power. I want to also observe future promotion deployment and transition of the number of selling.

700?
-
Oooooh, 700, lookout everybody! X-Box is in da house!!
-
Gates himself said only 250,000 at launch, hopefully if demand is high and WOMA spreads, it can sell a bundle and fuel the desire for consoles in Japan.
Eric Jacob
-
Well Microsoft could\'ve done all the advertising in the world to win the hearts and souls of Japanese but I dont think they\'ll ever take on an American made system like they do a Japanese made one. Dont know though, maybe I\'ll be proved wrong. Oh wait, Gamepube was a complete flop. sigh...

STARBUCKS/XBOX!!!!
Are you sure those pics aren\'t from Seattle? J/k.. lol

It turn out a great day for Japan Xbox launch. The Xbox sold all over Japan and I\'m still waiting for the numbers to come in. :D
edit: this just came in!!! "Countdown Xbox" launch footage!!!
http://impress.tv/im/ondemand/imcxb020222p.asx
-
why is it when xbox launches there are always so many of those damn bill gates pictures?
I hope it does well in Japan, I doubt it\'ll do great in europe on the 1st year
-
Well, contrary to me believing the system would have at least sold out at launch and contrary to the screenshot fiasco and the overly glaring possibility of its popularity from a few launch pictures, the Xbox is not faring too well in Japan. In fact, it\'s doing much worse then I thought it would be doing which is sort of sad, but at the same time, expected. Sales should pick up soon, but we\'ll see. Here\'s some information from IGNinsider regarding it. I will only give one screenshot and a few quotes from Insider regarding it. Maybe someone else can host the images on their servers and post them here, I won\'t do it though.
First, the quote to end all quotes:
From Anoop Gantayat, IGN Japan:
And so, at long last, the Xbox was available for all to buy. Shortages? Panic in the streets of Tokyo? Not by a long shot. Touring a few retailers revealed a plentiful supply of systems and product. You could go into Laox, for instance, and pick up a special edition unit off the shelf.
Damn, if AlteredBeast\'s launch numbers of 250,000 units is correct for the Japanese launch, and a minority of those being Special Edition systems, then this is really bad for MS.
Now, here\'s an image of a setup at a store in Akihabara, Japan in the middile of the day after the launch "fiasco."
Well, that\'s the main gaming area of Japan stocking a limited amount of systems in the middile of the day, with no customers in site. *Sigh* This could be bad...
-
best part about this is.. the SE xboxs didnt sell out :D:D:D:D:D which neans you could just inagine how bad the regular ones sold :D:D:D:D:D
-
...so much for selling out. And there are only 250,000 units!
-
So.. Lets start speculating..
I reckon they sold about... mmmm I dunno 60 000-90 000 units? :nerd:
-
I had originaly estimated 100,000 at launch..
however i\'m not sure it will make that target
all the japaneese websites and people were crazy over the SPECIAL EDITION xbox.. however.. if there are still some on the shelf and they made only 20k.. then I guess more around 60k-70k xboxes sold
-
just wait till [fill in the blank]
thats all were gonna hear
-
This was expected, when I was there this summer they some REALLY poor advertising for xbox, tucked away somewhere in the corner of the shops
I wonder how it will do in europe
-
*sigh*
Yes... no customers in sight. And sadly enough, those boxes on display were all empty boxes. Its a wonder customers didn\'t rush in to purchase empty Xbox boxes... what a shame.
Notice how the boxes on the top say "SAMPLE". They were all empty boxes. Sad, isn\'t it? Mid-day and all the empty SAMPLE boxes are still on the floor not being sold.
-Snakes.
[Do not quote an entire post after you have replied to it, especially one with a picture in it. -Ryu]
-
yeah right, they\'re gonna have over 50 "sample" boxes on the sales floor
granted two of them say sample, but that doesnt even necessarrily mean theyre empty. they also look like theyre on a different pile
the xbox launch wasnt even a 1/5th of what the PS2 launch was TWO YEARS AGO, so no point in trying to defend it
-
and they said there would be fighting in the Streets of Tokyo to get a X box on Launch day
more like there was fight in tokyo trying to get as far as they can from Bill Gates.
Run run my Japansese gameing Brothers and Sisters before the EVIL one Steels your Soul !

Expect the same NON-intest when the Big Black Plastic Brick hits Bonnie Scotland.

You know what\'s really funny? The quotes from the people who are actually there and said that they could walk in off the streets and buy an Xbox, especially since only 250,000 were produced for their launch weekend. If they can\'t sell 250,000 consoles on launch day to the most hardcore Japanese tech heads, then I don\'t know what American company can. Besides that, the PS2 sold 1 million consoles in 48 hours, MS didn\'t even touch those numbers.
- On a side note, if you are going to be such a total jackass and attempt to dissprove something, you might as well try to dissprove the entire post, particularly the quotes which are the most important aspect of my reply. Instead, you focused on one picture, one picture of SEVERAL on IGNInsider depicting street outlets and stores with tons of Xboxes in stock. I don\'t see why street outlets would need so MANY sample boxes especially with the space they have to work with which is no bigger then my bedroom.
This is Japan my friend. They have no time to BS their customers with box displays like here in America. They\'d rather be moving product then wowing customers with how much stock they have on their hands.
-
I think it will be a matter of time before the Xbox and GCN start to sell better...Right now PS2 is locked in everyone\'s mind as the console of choice (in japan anyway) because of the crazy amount and genre of software available. Japan is a totally different market then the US and I don\'t think MS could have prepared for it in the time alloted. It\'s going to take a major gaming force (Enix, Square for example) to make them open their eyes to anything else but PS2.
Compared, Xbox and GCN have no where near what PS2 does in terms of software. Once PS2 starts to show it\'s age a little more (it\'s beginning to) then people will undoubtedly move on...I\'m guessing by the end of the year PS2 will "peak" if it hasn\'t already...
I fear Europe won\'t be much different. What with the high price and all...:(
It\'s not like MS is totally in the dumps...the US is an entirely different story...:D
This is just speculation, treat it as such...
-

Why is that funny? I think it\'s horrible that Japan can\'t see past PS2...I think it will only be a matter of time.
Besides that, the PS2 sold 1 million consoles in 48 hours, MS didn\'t even touch those numbers.
PS2 also had a very well received previous console...
Did anyone really expect MS to outdo the PS2 launch numbers in Japan? I didn\'t...there\'s nothing appealing to them in the launch lineup.
It will take Panzer Dragoon, Project Ego, and such to catch their true attention...
Same goes for GC, I think GC sales will see a sharp uprise when MarioSunshine and games of that caliber are released...
-
>"Did anyone really expect MS to outdo the PS2 launch numbers in Japan? I didn\'t...there\'s nothing appealing to them in the launch lineup.

I expected it to sell 150k..
it did not even do that (yes, I know i\'m estimating.. but i\'ve researched the topic)
All the games you have listed don\'t come out for a long time.. how long do you expect it to stay alive in japan without software the japaneese want?
JSRF and Project Gouthem Racing failed to sell 10k.. if those games nobody wants, how will it survive?
-
Xbox sold 123 000 the first day says Bloomberg.
-
>"Xbox sold 123 000 the first day says Bloomberg."
not even half of the shipment..
I can tell you it sold less then 10k on day 2.. and even less on day 3 (see my post)

Read that first line again and see if you can spot the perverted message.
Wonder if that was purposely done...
-
For a U.S.A system 123,000 is not too bad. :D
"Even Gates has admitted that the success of the machine should not be judged on initial sales."
He said: "This is not the Christmas season. You shouldn\'t compare us to numbers like that.
"As we get into next December, we should be able to deliver good numbers."

granted two of them say sample, but that doesnt even necessarrily mean theyre empty. they also look like theyre on a different pile
the xbox launch wasnt even a 1/5th of what the PS2 launch was TWO YEARS AGO, so no point in trying to defend it
I don\'t know how to answer that. This discussion is pointless in SO MANY WAYS.
I don\'t believe anybody is under the presumption that Xbox launch is going to rival PS2\'s launch. When the PS2 came out, it was the only console out at the time, and Japanese by in large did not have DVD players. They bought them in droves not only for the fact that it was the latest, but mainly b/c it also had a DVD player built in.
Xbox doesn\'t have that luxury.
Those who are naysayers about the Xbox\'s success really have to ask yourself, "WHY". Is it because you hate Microsoft, the giant evil? Is it because you are such fanboys that you wish to marry Sony since they last raped you with the exorbant price of their televisions and video equipment.
Alas, how we have deviated from the quest of good gaming and intead resort to how to chide a console\'s success because we feel its success will ruin the world.
The launch wasn\'t spectacular... but it wasn\'t AS bad as some people put it. No ghost town, to say the least.

JSRF and Project Gouthem Racing failed to sell 10k.. if those games nobody wants, how will it survive?
Jet Set Radio and MSR didn\'t do too well in japan either. This was predictable...
The GC has made it since Sept...when Super Smash Bros was released it saw a huge spike in sales. All that needs to be done is have some killer apps released somewhat close to eachother to keep the hype up. I\'m guessing (hoping) that MS has something in store for summer or fall. If they don\'t have a good turn around by then, then it\'s probably safe to assume it will fade quickly thereafter...

MS said they have 80 first and second party games up until March 2003...most of which haven\'t been announced or shown at all. There has got to be something in there with the Japanese audience in mind...
I really hate to say it, but wait till E3...if there is nothing else announced by then, MS is DOOMED...

ehhe, j00 said "wait till E3"
