Yea he definitely lost his magical touch a few years back.  Still, he brought the company from nowhere to Nintendo so he will be missed...

And yea who will replace him?  Hopefully a fan of Final Fantasy, right?

This is old news, and I can easily get a better translation! ;)

Hehe, all joking aside.. I\'m truly sad to see Hiroshi go. Most gamers (like ddaryl) don\'t understand Yamauchi and his decisions. Some may seem erratic, others plain stupid.. but 90% of them worked surprisingly well. This guy definitely knows how to run a business.. he\'s a classic Japanese businessman.

give me a break I understand completely

GC sales are slow and looking grim. Products are being delayed and there has been little effort on Nintendo\'s part to re-establish itself as "THE" gaming company

sure he\'s a "Classic" Japanese businessman, unable to adjust and change his ways

i can only hope that the new president remembers who put them on the map, the mature gamers

nintendo is failing at targeting the 5-9 range

hell, if they keep doing as bad as they are, I\'d just like to see them become another Sega and do nothing but make games and open arcades.

Yeah its really wierd seing the big names go under in this new era of gaming. Maybe its what we need. Soon sony and microsoft + maybe some other new company will start gaming on a new slate. This would be the genesis vs. Snes bout and the mext gen systems after will be the "playstation vs. saturn vs. Jaguar (nintendo. A pioneer trying to make a failed comeback), vs n64. I dont know but we\'l just have to see.  I wonder what the industry would have been like if indrema would have mde it.

Well I guess that\'s more understandble.  It was begining to sound like nobody bought a GameCube and they were destined to fall next week.

It\'s best for Yamauchi to go.  He worked wonders but now things need to change.  They need to open up a little.  Had Yamauchi been staying longer I\'d be worried but with a new president and highly anticipated games coming this year they are setting themselves up to be formidable competitor.

Well, just incase I come across biased against Nintendo, Im not.  I havent got the system yet but I problly will as soon as I get around to it.  I just dont want to buy the system and not have any decent games to play but ofcourse that would be my fault if that happnened.

i got a gamecube only because i had nothing else I wanted...

BTW, they do need more mature games, they can\'t live on the Resident Evil Series, they should cut a deal with Take-Two.

Honestly, I don\'t see Nintendo going under.  Not at all.  Sure they are failing to target the mature gamer audience, but they are still right on with younger groups.  That is easily enough to keep them in business.  Do they need to make changes to regain the top spot they once had?  Yes, definitely.  Perhaps this is the first step towards that.

Well, one thing we can all agree on is that they really screwed up and it\'s gonna be a little bit before they get steady again.

Well...not to contradict you or anything...but...

I think it\'s not as much that they screwed up as that they were outdone, and never really stepped up to the new competition of PS2/X-box.  It could just be that they need time to find more developers for GC.  They get Squaresoft back, and maybe a few mature game developers, and suddenly the Gamecube is looking a whole lot better.

Bleh, I don\'t know why we even both debating non-Sony consoles in here. There\'s no winning. :)

Always something about "mature" games.. sheesh. How long were your brainwashing sessions? I skipped mine!

Yea, guess I\'ll go with u on that, but the Ol\' guy just doesn\'t seem to know where Nintendo needs to go in order to keep suceeding.  Hopefully they\'ll pull thier heads out of thier asses soon and realise we\'re not the same little kids that played thier NES and SNES systems, now we\'re all grown up looking for better forms of entertainment besides just Mario or Pokemon for that matter.

The only thing Nintendo needs to do is get the games out in a reasonable time. If they start to do that, then they\'ll be fine. The GBA makes enough money to keep Nintendo alive through-out some of the worst times. Not to mention, once Pokemon, Mario and Zelda come out, the GC sales will rise a lot.

Nintendo is smart for not going all out and targeting the mature audience. Sony and MS are fighting for that right now, if Nintendo entered that "market" it would be a no-win situation and they would risk losing more money. However, if they just release one or two mature titles here and there (Eternal Darkness, etc) and then let third party developers such as Capcom put some mature titles out, they will be okay. It isn\'t as if anyone else is targeting the younger audience, so this is just gurantee\'d sales for Nintendo once they start pumping the titles out (which, as I mentioned is their only massive fault and the reason for slow GC sales).

To add to the topic a bit, it\'s pretty widely speculated that he will be replaced with a board of people rather than just one president.  Hopefully a couple of those heads will have some good ideas.

Personally, I think they just need better marketing.  They have the games and the lineup.  They just need to make people notice them.  Crave them.

mmmmmm video games...

Eiksirf,

The television ads I\'ve seen for GC seem to aim at saying ‘the GC is here\' and not much more. I can\'t help but wonder if the strategy is to keep a low profile until more killer apps are ready with  plenty of consoles in stock to handle the demand. After all, while the NA launch wasn\'t a major sellout, basically there still weren\'t enough cubes to go around. Creating a demand beyond what you can reasonably hope to fill is a waste of resources. Maybe the reason I\'ve only been seeing ads for GBA lately?  Just thinking out loud. Pay no attention....

Nintendo is doing just fine in spite of pulling some major boners. Without a overlord at the helm who would only council with himself for advice things should go much better.

That makes sense but I still think mindshare is very important.

That is to say if people are going around thinking "GTA.  Playstation.  Xbox."  They\'re not going to be buying Nintendo stuff.

Hit them with something that leaves an impression and it\'ll pay off.

The commercials have become generic.  Despite showing off even third party software, it all blends together.  Game specific stuff like those funny Hedgehog commercials stick with people and that\'s what they need more of...
