RalliSport Challenge review at IGN
The new king of Xbox racing is here.
February 28, 2002 - The Xbox is quickly turning into a racing fan\'s dream machine. While we\'ve yet to see a game that tackles the depth of Sony\'s Gran Turismo, Microsoft and its third-parties are doing a great job at covering each and every sub-genre. Whether it\'s NASCAR, F1, off-roading, or street racing, there\'s plenty of vehicle action for everyone. Now, just in time for the European launch, Microsoft is adding yet another quality title to the list. RalliSport Challenge, the first rally racer for Xbox comes courtesy of Swedish development studio Digital Illusions (not to be confused with the Canada-based studio behind Shrek), the same guys that created Rally Masters.
Fusing fast-paced arcade racing with tons of authentic cars, realistic rally tracks, and gorgeous graphics, DICE has created a riveting game that no racing fan should be without. Don\'t worry if you\'re not into watching WRC on TV and don\'t know why people would possibly want to drive from Paris to Dakar -- you don\'t have to be a rally fan to get into this game. All you need is two hands and a hankering for driving insanely fast on vicious terrain.
Gameplay
Let\'s get this out of the way first: RalliSport Challenge goes for fun over realism. The realistic graphics may make it look like a racing simulation, but the developers decided to forego some of the technical aspects of rally racing and instead added a healthy dose of extra speed. You can still set up your car before each race and pick your choice of tire, but the car management menus are more of an afterthought than an integral part of the game. Likewise, damage is mostly cosmetic and merely influences your bonus points -- not car behavior or control. While it would have been nice to have a deeper damage system, you really can\'t fault this game for concentrating on racing over car customization and maintenance. You don\'t need to wade through tons of menus or worry that driving off a cliff will have a lasting impact on the overall championship. RalliSport Challenge is fast and exciting -- and it never slows down.
The game features four basic gameplay modes: Career, Single Race, Time Attack, and Multiplayer (up to four players split-screen). The Career mode is of course the heart of the game. You create a player profile, then dive right into a series of 17 racing events. Progression through the career mode is point based. After each race, you are awarded points according to your placement, time, and car damage. Your totals are then added up after each completed event (you can go back and re-race an event to get a higher point score), which in turn unlocks new sets of tracks and cars.
In case you\'re wondering, RalliSport Challenge features a huge lineup of licensed rally and hill climb cars, including: Ford Escort Cosworth Rally, Volkswagen Beetle, Castrol Toyota Corolla, Peugeot 306, Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI, Subaru Impreza WRX, Ford Focus Cosworth, Peugeot 206, Saab 83 TI6 4x4, Opel Astra TI6 4x4, Ford Focus Rallycross, Citroen Xsara Rallycross, Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 65, Subaru Impreza Hill Climb, Lancia Delta Integrale, Nissan Skyline, Metro ER4, Peugeot 205 TI6, Audi Quattro SI, Lancia Delta S4, Peugeot 405 TI6 Hill Climb, Audi Quattro SI Hill Climb, Suzuki Grand Vitara PP Special, Toyota Tacoma Hill Climb, as well as some unlisted prize cars you can win by getting first in some of the competitions. The events themselves are made up of multiple races and draw from four different rally racing styles: point-to-point Rally (you race alone against a timer to place within the top 3), Rallycross (circuit-based races against three opponents), Ice Racing (circuit-based racing once ice tracks against three opponents), and Hill Climb (an uphill point-to-point race to get to the peak of a mountain). While the first two have become staple elements of each and every rally racing game, it\'s great to see Hill Climb and Ice Racing making the cut. The number of environments/countries in RalliSport Challenge may not be as high as in competing racers, like V-Rally, for example, but the actual gameplay is much more varied thanks to the fact that Ice Racing feels so different from a point-to-point competition.
Which brings me to what makes this game so much fun: it feels just right. Unlike most rally racers, RalliSport Challenge is not only fast, it also features truly exciting tracks. Sure, certain track elements repeat, but the terrain just doesn\'t have that generic "texture-set-swapped" quality that plagues many rally games. If you\'ve ever watched a rally race on TV and marveled at the dash-cam footage, you\'ll be amazed at how well DICE translated the look and feel of battling against the terrain to your Xbox. But the developers didn\'t just duplicate the look of a static camera. By introducing subtle camera movement when using the hood view cam, you really feel like you\'re experiencing what it feels like to speed towards a sharp curve, pull the e-brake and slide around the corner at an angle. Using one of the many third-person camera viewpoints may make navigating the unknown tracks easier in the beginning, but there\'s nothing like viewing this game from the driver\'s eyes.
While power-slide heavy street racers like Ridge Racer can get away with fantasy physics, realistic car behavior and friction is key to making rally games feel like the real thing. Even though RalliSport features slightly relaxed gravity (letting you catch more air), it perfectly captures the feeling of driving on different surfaces. You really get a good sense of the tires gripping when you skid from gravel onto tarmac, for example. Likewise, competing in an ice race not only feels different from hill climb, it requires you to adjust your driving to turn into curves earlier and to use your brakes more often to keep from crashing into barriers.
I could go on and on -- but I\'d just be repeating myself: this is a great game that\'s easily the Xbox\'s best racer yet. There are some minor flaws, like the lack of a "true" rear view mirror (which would have helped in Rallicross mode -- the full-screen look back is a bit dangerous), or the way the game sometimes resets you too early when you\'re skidding off track, but those are minor issues. The only real complaint I have is that the career mode could have been so much deeper. The way you progress through the championships isn\'t exactly innovative, but it gets the job done. It would have been nice to have more of a true career/team mode where you stick with one team and compete for sponsorships, new cars, or car upgrades, but the legal issues involved with trying to persuade car manufacturers and rally teams to carry fantasy decals would of course be immense. In the same vein, I would have much preferred to compete for single prize cars rather than trying to beat a bonus point score and unlock a batch of cars at the same time. That way, the new cars you win become much more meaningful and you\'ll actually want to try out each one you unlock. Finally, the multiplayer mode is a bit underdeveloped. A two-player career mode would have helped to make it more than just an afterthought. As it stands, RalliSport provides fun (and fairly smooth) split-screen versus races for up to four players, but it remains just an added bonus to an excellent single player racer.
Graphics
The first time I played Halo, I asked myself how long we\'d have to wait to see another Xbox game with textures that look this good when viewed up close. If you don\'t know what I\'m talking about and you\'ve been too busy blasting the Talmadge Blevins-like grunts, pop in Halo, put away your blaster for a second, and walk up to a tree and look at the bark. That\'s some sweet texture design (and mip-mapping) right there. Well, turns out that we didn\'t have to wait all that long. Thanks to Digital Illusions, RalliSport Challenge not only plays great, it\'s also a graphical tour-de-force with detailed textures, beautiful lighting, and smooth framerates all around. If you\'ve been looking at the screenshots we\'ve put up of this game, you already know to expect highly detailed car models, realistic landscapes, and fantastic lighting effects. But it\'s the little details that really make this game shine. Trees and grass gently sway in the wind, your car\'s windows shatter after a particularly rough landing, a thin layer of dust coats your car when you drive through the desert, the tarmac subtly reflects the sunlight, and the ice... Well, you\'ve got to see an ice race at dusk in action to truly cherish how good this game looks.
There are so many little details, we didn\'t even notice some of them until a few days into playing RalliSport Challenge. Drive into a tree and leaves fall down, pass some zebras and their heads will turn, and virtually any object you smash into will get knocked over and will remain on the ground until the end of the race. Add to that a plethora of particle and weather effects and you\'ve got one sweet looking racer. On the downside, owners of large TVs will definitely notice some jaggies around the cars and the game doesn\'t quite get mud right. I\'m still waiting for a next-gen rally racer that treats mud with the respect it deserves. Mud is slippery and nasty and splatters all over your car when you drive through it. I would have loved to see some real mud action in RalliSport\'s rainy stages, but every other type of surface in this game looks and feels convincing, so that\'s a minor flaw. Overall, this is one pretty game that makes even driving yellow cars look cool.
-
Sound
As far as sound effects go, RalliSport is top notch. The developers recorded a variety of engine noises for the different cars and they all sound authentic (if you\'re not a rally fan, don\'t get confused if some of the cars sound like vacuum cleaners. They\'re supposed to be that way). The shift, brake, road noise, and collision effects sound equally real, but the road noise could have been more prevalent. One of the loudest things you\'ll hear in a rally car is the sound of rocks, gravel and sand hitting the underside of the car, but it\'s drowned out by the engine sound in this game. Thanks to the bumpy terrain this only really becomes apparent on long straights. The voice of your co-pilot navigator, who announces the particularities of the track ahead, is clear and on target. You can of course also switch it off and rely exclusively on one of two different types of driving aids available for your HUD.
RalliSport Challenge features a decent techno soundtrack by bands like Dub Pistols and Fear Factory, but given the amount of hours you\'re likely to log with this game, the custom soundtrack options come in really handy. Like Project Gotham, you can combine songs from any of your playlists and mix them in with the existing tracks in RalliSport Challenge to create a truly customized soundtrack.
Closing Comments
Microsoft seems to be eager to prove that it can take on the competition in every genre. After launching the Xbox with a competent street racer, MS is now going up against the likes of Codemasters and Infogrames and is once again proving that it knows how to pick a quality game. RalliSport Challenge is likely to pull you in with its amazing visuals, but you\'ll soon find that this beauty has brains to boot. This is an intense racing game that commands all of your attention as any small driving mistake can send your car careening off a cliff or into a tree. Don\'t overlook this gem of a racer just because you\'re not into rally racing. It\'s fast, it\'s furious, and it has to be yours. Go get it now!

Presentation
Plenty of licensed cars and official sponsors make this game look like the real deal. The no-frills menus could have used more work, though. 8
Graphics
Wow. This is the Halo of racing games. Detailed textures, gorgeous lighting, tons of effects. 9.5
Sound
Realistic, well-mixed 5.1 sound effects and a decent techno soundtrack. Next time, even more road noise please. 8
Gameplay
RalliSport is a highly playable, fast and exciting racer that just happens to be a rally game. A must-have. 9.5
Lasting Appeal
The multiplayer options lack depth (split-screen single race only) and the career mode could have been deeper, but there are plenty of tracks and cars to unlock. 8
OVERALL SCORE (not an average) 9.2

i wonder i i can Sue Bill gates for damage to my eyes after veiwing that screen shot ?
-
I\'ll add this game to Halo and Munch next week!
-
You know, you guys who constantly berate every title that comes out for the XBox would have a little more creditability if you said you liked the look of an XBox title once and a while.

we like halo and munch
the rest suck or are VERY little improvement over what the PS2 offers
plus every screenshot i see of upcoming xbox titles is either full of jaggies or blurred to hell and back
-
I really don\'t want another racing game, even if it is good.
-
I\'m not saying that this game won\'t be good, because it will probably be pretty decent, but IGN? They give every one of the Xbox\'s high profile games a 9.x score. Even WWF RAW got a 9.1, and most Xbox and wrestling fans will tell you that it definitely didn\'t deserve it. I think we should wait for a more credible source.

...this game is great graphically and it got superlative reviews...but I\'ve still to play it...
Hope you don\'t bash me if you see one jaggie :p

Looks like fun. I luv racing games :D . Those screens are ok. For the amount of scenery on screen those graphics are decent. I wish we could see more things going on, on screen. Oh well it still looks fun.
-
I wonder why the earlier pics look perfect (no jaggies) while the newest ones look horrible in that sense.
Still very nice graphics though. ;)
-
Gotta love the irony.
PS2 fans complaining about jaggies. Yeah, so people assumed the Xbox would have FSAA 100% of the time resource-free. Guess what? We don\'t live in a fantasy world, common sense should have told you otherwise.
While the Xbox may contain some jaggies, it is nowhere near to the extent of the jaggies, shimmering, and blurry textures that most PS2 games contain. It\'s really getting redundant to read the same attacks against the Xbox time and time again.
If you want to hold it against M$ for broken promises or unfulfilled expectations, do the same against Sony.
Damnit, long live the Dreamcast.
-
Guys, they\'re just pics, and bad ones at that...I asure you the game doesn\'t have jaggies.

pstwo posted a review with pics that don\'t make the game justice...The End...:)
-
when do pics ever do a gae justice though
here is irony for you - xbox fan saying you have to see it on tv - nothing against ya but i remember hearing that a lot by ps2 when jaggies occured
but anyway the game looks decent and i say that because the cars are lacking honestly and the backgrounds are great - so take great + lacking = decent
im only talking about graphics and nothing more as i havent played the game yet
-
mm,
The shimmering effect is only something you see once the game is in motion, not in still screen shots. It\'s due to the lack of mip-mapping in most PS2 games, the textures shimmer in the distance.
sublime,
That\'s fine, you don\'t see me saying you have to see the game on the TV in order to appreciate it.
The fact of the matter is, PS2\'s image quality is not as good as the Xbox, jaggies or not, the PS2\'s output is still gonna look slightly worse than the Xbox. And I\'m saying slightly to be nice. I have *sigh* 20 PS2 games, and most of them suffer from The PS2 Syndrome (tm).
Most of the Xbox games that are not up to par (in graphics,) come from lame American developers who weren\'t that great to begin with. Just because the Xbox has the potential doesn\'t automatically mean all games are going to look great. Let the Japanese try their hand at the beast, and they will show what it can do. Take SEGA\'s JSRF (a beauty to behold,) or of course the gameplay lacking DOA3. Two games from developers that know their graphics.
Hey, I love my PS2 as much as the next guy, but it has glaring faults that cocky Sony overlooked.
-
yes data, i know what shimmering is
look at the pic above
find a texture in the show in fron of the red car
look at the billboards
shimmering dissapears in screen cartures?
:D

Heh....it\'s cracked! :D

Actually mm, that also has to do with the filtering technique they use. :) But I suppose it\'s a matter of preference, would you prefer shimmering textures in the distance? Or blurred ones? The blurred ones are easy to spot in screenshots, but when you are playing, it isn\'t as distracting as the shimmering ones.. at least to me anyway.
-
actually i prefer neither [shimmering or blurring]
it doesnt matter if thats a PS2, xbox, or GC shot
they are crappy to what i expect from a "next-gen" console
it yer satisfied with them, thats fine too
*blatant xbox bash disclaimer*
but i expect more from a brand new $300 console that was supposed to be the "ps2 killer"

i couldnt agree with you more actually - i feel the same way i know that xbox has and will have greater graphics dont get me wrong - i know the xbox can do a lot more then what its doing now and i do believe in the hands of the more experienced devs graphics will shine through in a sense but until those devs start stepping up i am finding my self displeased with the games i see
PS2 like you said is at fault as well - they are trying too hard to out do graphics of xbox and thats not gonna happen - they should focus more on the gameplay and imo game length - as in content - too many games are failing to last long now adays and they are more movies then games - its a sad things really

Here\'s another review at Gamepen.ugo.com
Score: 5 out of 5 stars.
Pros: Fantastic arcade rally game, incredible graphics, nice multiplayer
Cons: No system link, some races are very difficult
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fgamepen.ugo.com%2FGamepen%2FImages%2FNumb_Thumb.gif&hash=e117769c64b35236872777b08bf3d3639e6729b3)
Long straight, medium right, yeah baby…
Rally racing is something that is really big in Europe but for whatever reason hasn’t really picked up in the US. Like soccer, rally racing is very underrated; it is a very difficult sport, and, with mud and snow flying around, it can be a very dirty one too.
You may be asking, what’s the big difference between ‘traditional’ stock car racing and rally racing. Well, in a nutshell, you know in NASCAR how you drive around in laps around a track and whoever is the leader at the end of the race wins? Rally is a lot different. Instead of laps, you’ll be racing in real-world environments, over bridges, dirt, gravel, you name it. And, you’ll be racing in segments of a road rather than laps. You’ll be awarded points for the segments, and the winner is whomever comes out with the most points at the event end. Basically, just finish first and you’ll be all set.
Microsoft has released RalliSport Challenge for Xbox, and, boy, is it a gorgeous sight. NASCAR Heat and Project Gotham Racing had their graphical moments, but they can’t hold a candle to RalliSport Challenge. This game is incredible in how gorgeous it is. The cars, the track surface, the landscapes... ooh la la. Watching the cars take damage is a pretty neat thing to see as well; you’ll see cracked windshields and crinkled spoilers. While the damage doesn’t seem to affect your car while driving all that much, it does look pretty. Other neat graphical touches include the way the muffler spits out exhaust when shifting gears, the treads your ‘tyres’ leave, and the rustling of tree branches in the wind.
Variety is the spice of life, and RSC has more than 25 different cars, most of which are locked at the beginning. While I’m not a big fan of locking stuff up in the game, kudos to the designers for telling you up front what’s locked and what you need to do in order to unlock it.
There are four different game modes of play, and in my opinion the most challenging type of race has to be the ice race. Speed skating this isn’t; it’s very difficult to control your car but it is pretty darn fun. (Sounds like short track to me, Mr. Ohno. -Jonah) Other modes include the “hill climb” (without the “This car climbed Mount Washington” bumper sticker), traditional rally and rallycross. There is a multiplayer option for split screen four player action, but nothing for system link—not that I have 4 Xboxes lying around.
Control is excellent with the Xbox controller, and I was a bit surprised by that. A wheel is still the best way to play a racing game, but the Xbox controller doesn’t do a bad job handling powerslides.
In most rally games you’ll have a co-pilot that tells you what’s up ahead on the track. Let’s say there’s a hairpin turn coming up. The co-pilot will say “hairpin right.” Folks, I’ve played many a rally game for the PC and PS1, and by far this is the best co-pilot I’ve ever driven with. Not only does he know what’s coming up, he gives you a good amount of warning so that you can drive accordingly. The co-pilot will also alert you to off road obstacles, so if he says “medium right, don’t cut” that means don’t cut the corner, because there’s either water or rocks or some obstacle in the way. As I mentioned, the co-pilot gives you more than enough time to take evasive action and I really appreciate that.
While this is an off-road rally game, you really can’t drive anywhere you like. If you get caught too far off course, you’ll reset back on the track somewhere. Also, if you roll over your vehicle, you’ll also be able to press the magic reset car button.
Microsoft shows off some Rally skill
Gameplay itself is very fast and very arcade-ish, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Tweaks are limited to a few. There are five options such as Gear Ratio, and you aren’t actually adjusting numbers; you’re changing it from ‘medium’ to ‘long’. As I also mentioned earlier, the damage model doesn’t really affect the driving in the game. You’ll be able to reset your car anyway in career mode although you’ll get a time penalty. Another big tip here is to read the manual before you start playing. The manual lists every item the co-pilot says, and why. It should be essential reading and kudos to Microsoft for including this in their manual.
The career mode is the area you’ll be spending the most time in especially if you want to unlock more races and cars. You’ll be acquiring points to move on throughout the different types of rallies.
Sounds are typical racing, but you’ll notice distinct sounds depending on the type of surface you are racing on. The co-pilot is clear and much more audible than previous rally racing games I’ve played. The music included with the game is very good (it goes with the European flair of the game), but also of note is the fact you can use your ripped audio throughout the game.
Overall, while I wish there could be an option to choose strict sim realism or arcade realism, there’s really not much else to not like about RalliSport Challenge. If you like driving a car and driving it fast you’ll really enjoy RSC. Control can be hard on the ice surfaces, but I view it as a real-life learning experience. This is hands down the best console racing game I’ve played in 2002.

im only talking about graphics and nothing more as i havent played the game yet
where\'s the irony guy?
I\'m both a PS2 and XBox fan and I\'ve never complained about jaggies on PS2 games...and never judge a game from pics...have I ever said J&D looks like crap because most pics do not look good? or VF4 full of jaggies because pics show that?
I think you should look at this game carefully or clean your glasses because it looks great, not decent...and it\'s a fact, not an opinion...

I don\'t know if you\'ve seen the animations of the trees...and the cars look great too!
and about jaggies...you know that it\'s not a problem for the XBox,once dev will optimize use of memory and everything...
don\'t put XBox and PS2 on the same level when some guys speak or complain about jaggies!
...though I don\'t give a **** if other X fans complain about PS2 pics...
fact is XBox can do better quality images!

100% agreed! no further words!

so yer making excuses for the xbox right?

uhh..? trying to outdo XBox in graphics? who is? no one is.. take a look at the games m8.. the games with the best graphics are also the games with the best gameplay..
FFX, J&D, MGS2 and more. GTA3 doesnt have graphics that compare with XBox.. and was never intended to.. in fact, only J&D out of those games was ever built up by the developers to challenge XBox games, and it does that successfully.. the game isnt too short, in fact, IMO its the best platformer ever..
so out of all the games on PS2, which ones actually attempted to compete with XBox graphics, and out of those, which ones failed in the gameplay department.
and about jaggies...you know that it\'s not a problem for the XBox,once dev will optimize use of memory and everything...

i think GTA3 has great graphics
its the details that get me like newspapers blowing in the wind, or the smoke from an engine, or the way my guy reaches out and slams the drivers side door shut when its swaying open
last night, i got to the "kill salvatore" mission
it was the single most coolest moment in my gaming history
raced over to portland within 4 minutes
lined up two blocks away in an alley with the sniper rifle
salvatore leaving the club surrounded by his thugs
load up the sniper rifle, zoom in
one shot, salvatore takes the bullet to the head, his lifeblood squirting into the air
the thugs go nuts running around, while i simply walk away and proceed to carjack a taxi
sorry for going a little off topic, but man i love this game

graphics may be purty, and a nice artistic quality.. but at 30 frames per second (approximately) it doesnt cut it
thats the same reason why i dont consider Halo the graphical masterpiece many XBox zealots do..

god damn you yanks way overrate this game :p that was pretty fun, i did the same thing, only about 50 yards away from him :D but it wasnt THAT cool... its not like i sit there "ohhh man, this is so awesome" like i did during FF7 and frankly.. i dont see why anyone else does.. its a fun game.. but by no means a masterpiece. Maybe if the actual system for shooting was as smooth as Syphone Filter\'s or something.. but its too buggy to make the missions like when you invade the boat all that fun..
saying a little thing like driving there in four minutes.. waiting for him to come out and popping him off is the greatest moment in gaming history is a bit of an exageration dont you think??
all my opinion of course.. dunno why i got so worked up..
-
yes, perhaps its cause violence appeals to me a great deal
racing across that bridge and making it to the club in the time allowed and getting a head shot off in one kill was VERY intense and satisfying for me
i have no problems with GTA3\'s shooting system, and in fact i think it works quite well. especially for doing drive by\'s
the "invade the boat" mission was fantastic
get a high shooting spot and tag the enemy before they can shoot 8-ball. classic.
the moments in FF7 were comparible to watching a great movie. you watch the plot lay out, but you dont actually do anything

Maybe J&D is not so short, but it\'s too easy,I\'ve finished it in 3 days...
ND spent a lot of time and resources in the graphics department and made a good platform, but not the jewel people were waiting for!
The game-play is old,no fresh and unique elements...nothing new! It\'s like playing Mario 64 with "Crash style",copying some stuff from other games with bigger environments! It\'s the best platform ever ? Not so sure...and...which rivals should have J&D ? RayMan2,Klonoa and Sonic...and? The games are not self-made,it needs time,a lot of time, and we should wait a little more(XBox and GC) before speaking about "the best platform ever",it should have more sense...
what the hell?? you just made the EXACT same excuse that PS2 fanboys have been making for ages, then told us not to put XBox and PS2 on the same level when it comes to complaining about it..

silly man :p
I said:"don\'t put XBox and PS2 on the same level when some guys speak or complain about jaggies!";) ...there\'s no comparison about "jaggies" in DOA3 vs JAGGIES in VF4,for example...but again...at first,PS2 fans,me included, said "almost" the same about PS2"Wait until developers figure it out"...but I had not a clue what I was speaking about...I was one of the hottest PS2 fanboys in my first 300 posts:)...the NV2a has built-in FSAA and you have not to figure out the way to implement it,but "only" to optimize and minimize the use of memory,in a word, dev has to understand UMA!
PS2 has to do FSAA via software,so not only you use up memory-bandwidth but you have a hit in the CPU performance...overall,a lot more problems...
...I\'ll do a research about it if you want...I think I\'ll do it...
Bobs:) ...these are not excuses...it\'s how software and tools work...
At first, when Sega fanboys bashed PS2 for the fact that launch games pushed 2,3,4 mpps...most PS2 fans said "wait and see"...2nd and 3rd gen games will push more polys, once dev understand how to use properly the V units...right? and what is happened? J&D is pushing 10-13 mpps...dev find new tricks, new ways of doing things and they try, year after year to optimize everything...
And all this will happen to the XBox too,PS2 is not exclusive to this(though it uses a new architecture)
Exactly like current PS2 games push 3 times the number of polys than Launch games...you\'ll see XBox games running at 60 fps with a huge number of polys, beautiful textures, lighting, shading,FSAA and more...it\'s how development works dear Bob :p

Honestly I think people are just trying to find reasons to not like this game, because they dont own an xbox. Jaggies? Give me a break. I own a ps2 and GT3(Great game) and I also own an xbox, and I will be getting this game.
Its a good game, and has awsome graphics, why can\'t you just accept that?

Thanks for filling me in on the ways of the industry, before now i was completely oblivious :p Fact still remains (and you have done a lot of debating about this recently i think) that while XBox development can be optimised from the launch games, PS2 games had a radical improvement. To the point where graphically the consoles can be compared. Sure XBox will improve and most likely get away from PS2 in the graphical area, but who cares?? I preferred talking about the fact that VRally looks better :p
thats enough :)

GTA3=teh suk!!!1!!

I\'m beginning to think by reading some of these posts that some of you are trying to nit pick at every detail in this game to find overall fault. Come on now...if it\'s good it\'s good whether it\'s on ps2, xbox, or Gamecube.
-
I preferred talking about the fact that VRally looks better
I don\'t judge or make comparison looking at pics...have you seen VRally on TV? However,if you like to judge games looking at pics,I\'d have to say that VRally, though it\'s impressive, have no detailed textures compared to Rallysport...
I wanna wait to compare them on my TV,to see how the first rally game on the XBox compare to a 3rd gen PS2 game :p
Fact still remains (and you have done a lot of debating about this recently i think) that while XBox development can be optimised from the launch games, PS2 games had a radical improvement.
You\'re right,PS2 games had a radical improvement from Launch...but now it\'s a 2 year old console and I formed the idea that XBox,from now on,will show bigger improvements...
If PS2 and XBox were been released, hypothetically,at the same time,you\'d have seen bigger improvements on PS2 games during 2,3,4,5 gen of games,it\'s obvious...but PS2,as you know,is a 2 years old machine and developers are using a lot of power right now!
Optimizations don\'t necessarily mean "little improvements"...some talented dev have said that XBox has a lot of untapped power...and even if we understand nothing about tech, using a bit of commonsense we should realize that each console has BIG improvements from the beginning to the end of its life...
Look at Jumping-Flash and Spyro3...and PSX was the simplest piece of hardware among the other rivals...
...and look at Dreamcast...do you remember the first video of Sega Rally 2,it looked like a PC game of 1998...and now look at the best DC games, and try to imagine if this console were been supported massively for other 2,3 years...
...and...were PSX and DC new and/or difficult and complex architectures? no...and XBox is more complex than both mentioned consoles...
-
What is says on "Tapping into the power of PS2"
GS Effects :
Anti-aliasing
•Hardware edge anti-aliasing.
–Requires sorted polygons but looks excellent.
•Full screen anti-aliasing
–Render to large draw buffer then use bi-linear filter to blend pixels smoothly.
–Render 4x with 25% alpha and 1/2pixel offset in 4 directions. Same effect without the VRAM hit
"GS Effects : Interlace blending
•Odd and Even lines are drawn alternately.
•Any image not drawn on both lines flickers.
•Scan-line blending solves the problem.
•Techniques to fix this
–GS blend circuits with interlaced buffers(free)
–Motion blur % of previous field(low VRAM)
–Shrink full height to display height with bilinear"
I\'d much rather blame SEGA for the jaggies than PS2.
Mind Tekken 4 has a very clean image... :)
-
fastson, you know how hard I fought against fanboys calling PS2 the jaggy-console,and I know that there\'re alternative ways to reduce jaggies, and some should be almost free...but I\'m wondering...why VF4 has all those jaggies?
I\'m open-minded...I wanna only understand...what scared me is that...even if PS2 were able to do perfect AA,how the hell Sony made a so complex and difficult piece of hardware which requires years and years only to implement great AA? or bump-mapping,etc...I\'d like to see dev focusing a lot more on game-play and length of games...instead of wasting resources to implement AA,bump-mapping and all the other effects GC and XBox do via hardware...it\'s my opinion...
The idea of freedom and flexibility is great, but if you exasperate it you run the risk of turning upside down...
It\'s cool the freedom to choose and share how much power I\'ll use for graphics, physics, animations, sound, and the EE is truly an innovative solution, but if you exasperate this idea, you force developers to waste too much time and resources to "unimportant" things for the game in itself(Good textures,AA,bump, etc),moving away their attention, time and resources from the most important things --->game-play,innovation,length and replay-value...
-
VF4 has all of those jaggies because using AA in the game would have forced Sega to make sacrifices. I think it was already said a while ago, PS2 can do AA quite well, it just takes quite a performance hit doing so. I guess we can all assume that Sega didn\'t think VF4 needed AA.
-

Yes I know how hard you fought..
Its up to the developer to implant AA/FSAA. Tekken Tag has AA, BGDA has 2x FSAA, Outcast 2 will have FSAA.. Its up to the developer!
Same thing on Xbox.
Not ALL Xbox games has AA or FSAA even though the Xbox has support for it!

Then good thing we have Hideo Kojima. He has always said Gameplay comes before Graphics.
Infact the graphics of MGS2 (believe it or not) was prioritized after Story and Gameplay.
We have the SCEI team who made ICO, a very innovative game.
You see it is NOT impossible to get graphics out of the PS2 even though you\'re not prioritizing graphics. (MGS2 and ICO are two of the best looking games on PS2 IMO.. And both focused on gameplay!! )
Now when Sony has released PA2 and VectorC (they were released early this year) it will be alot easier to get both from both worlds.
The idea of freedom and flexibility is great, but if you exasperate it you run the risk of turning upside down...

Leave the hardware to the developers BizioEE. Play the games like me. Dont worry about the hardware.
Do that and everything will be fine.. Trust me. :fro:
(Dammit mailman where are you? I want my MGS2 sometime this year!! )
Btw, the Arcade version of VF4 has jaggies. ;)
-
I\'ll take your advice fastson :) ...and I hope you\'ll take mine...open your mind a little more!:)

pablo32,
The problem is the whole Bill Gates thing for some around here.
As far as I can tell he is the anti-christ and we are all doomed if the XBox makes it in the gaming world.
I can\'t figure it out, but it sure makes for some interesting reading.
BTW, can\'t wait to get my hands on this game.

I think Rallisport does look very good generally..... however I dont think it looks anything better (going by these screen shots) than WRC on PS2 which has 81 tracks BTW..... ok it doesnt have animated trees, but then it does have allot better animated in car views and has animated crowds.....for me being in the UK, I feel that as the xbox console is hitting the streets at £100 more than PS2 together with the games being on average at least £5 more aswell that Im simply not going to consider the Xbox. The Xbox needs to show me something far better than what the PS2 can deliver for me to justify the more expensive outlay.... Im sure allot of UK/European gamers will think in a similar way.... if Microsoft dont reduce the price it may well sell, but in no way the amount that the PS2 is currently flying off shelves in the UK (and MGS2 has only just come out which will fuel PS2 sales even more) There is a huge PS2 user base in the UK at the moment and I just dont see how Microsoft can hope to steal any of that user base with its current pricing policy.
-
ok, so i finally picked up my copy of rallisport
indeed it does play well, and the cars handle good
BUT
poor AI and EXTENSIVE blur distract from my enjoyment
good thing i dont pay full price for my games
-
My god people! Arguing over such idiotic things......the graphics are ok I have seen very few games on the PS2 that looked as amazing as DOA3 for x-box.
If I were to pick at every thing that was wrong with MGS2:SOL I could find many things about the story line and some parts of the game That I found very bad! The fact you only play as Solid Snake for 1/10 of the game mad me mad. Whatever game it is for any console there WILL be jaggies. They may not be that noticable but they ARE there.
That game may have the best gameplay of any racing game ever created and if it has a few jaggies here or there I wouldnt care.
FF7 and many jaggies and it was my favorite game of all time! It had a great story, great gameplay and it was just a very fun game. MGS was my 2nd favorite game ever and it wasnt jaggie-proof. It was fun great story and terrific gameplay.
The important thing is graphics dont mean ANYTHING if the gameplay/storyline is messed up. If I played a game that had NO jaggies and looked more than real but had horrible gameplay and a story I was burn the game.
-
yer missing the point, the blur distracts, NOT ADDS, to the racing experience
look at the area beside and behind the car, they use bumpmapping, but ANYTHING in front of yer car, N64 style baby!
jaggies, i dont mind at all, i almost expect them
but THIS is pathetic
feels like im gonna drive on vaseline at any second

made you mad?? come on man, playing as Raiden, you get Raiden in all his glory, which added 100x to the storyline, plus you had Snake by your side the whole time adding input and they handled it in such a way that it made snake\'s character 100x better.. it made you mad? your just as shallow as those who say Jaggies ruin a game..

Bob,
May I direct you to this thread: http://www.psx2central.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=16709
A little old, but the feeling was there. :)
-
wow  lots of things in that thread i\'d like to reply to..
i even disagree with some of the things Ryu said! now that\'s rare..
but my point was that playing as Snake for the sake of playing as snake, is shallow.. his character was improved much more the way Hideo did it.
Snake was still the main character, he just wasnt the main playable one.. this is how hideo wanted it
people thought the second half sucked?? yeesh, i thought (besides the tanker episode) the first half sucked, and the second half was fantastic..
(we haves gotten off topic me thinks :))

You were right when you said you\'re full of crap 95% of time:) ...no offense...

ugly pics? thats a perfect example of my complaint. the blur
have you played the game? if so, you cannot honestly say the blur isnt distracting. look below and above the line in the pic i made.

well what can I say, I thought this game would be good, but didnt think it would be better than anything I already had on PS2... I have to admit I was wrong!
I played this game at the weekend and I personally think it is the best looking rally game Ive ever played. The only thing I dont think is better are the car models. Id say they appear if anything to have slightly less detail and a bit of allaising probs, but nothing to make a major difference. Where it excells in my opinion is in the track detail and overall solidness. I really dont think the blurring is a problem when its running. I still think WRC is excellant and the rally stages on GT3 cool aswell... but in terms of graphics, this game would defo get my vote over the PS2 equivalent, and Im a PS2 owner!
-
i would of loved it if it wasn\'t for some of the GOD awful graphics , the fact that i have already played GT3 and WRC ....and the fact you have to wrestle with a BEAR sized contoller to get your car round the track !

I find the XBox controller a great controller!

Have you seen the mediterranean stages? ss1 ans ss4 under the rain? very nice...and,honestly,I don\'t think if I\'m more distracted from the little blur of Rallisport in some stages or the shimmering of GT3...
-
Must admit as an overall I like the Xbox controller.... its not perfect but I do love the fact that it has the 2 joysticks (which I think are better) and the triggers.....I find the triggers superb for driving games. In all honesty I find it better than the PS2 joypad... though I think the comments about making sure you press the right buttons is fair comment as initially it is a bit of a pain. It is personal preference but I prefer the xbox controller, but that isnt to say that I dont also like the PS2 controller.
BTW I hated the dreamcast controller as it was way to small for me!

with out any effort or pain !
its SHAPE more than SIZE !
something tells me that if i ever get a X box ill sell the normal and opt for the S- controler !

I think thats fair coment, its just I actually feel more comfortable with the xbox one than the dualshock. Played Halo for 4 hours last night and had no aches at all. Have to admit I was surprised as by looking at the xbox controller I did think I wouldnt get on with it. Maybe Im one of the lucky ones who doesnt have any probs. The dreamcast is pretty much the only controller I didnt like as most my fingers always felt cramped while using the trigger.
Think really it just depends on the individual.

looks like i will be using a Type S controller if i finaly decide to get a Gates box !

I have rather small hands and I\'m just fine playing xbox. Either you guys have hands like 5-year-olds or your just complaining cause its not SONY. I played HALO like 5 hours straight with 8 people and it was great, and NO CRAMPED HANDS.

hold the controller so the right grip is in yer palm like normal. then put yer right thumb on the analog stick. you cant tell me you can reach the white button without shifting yer right hand
also, why on earth did they put the analog sticks on seperate levels?

Cause god does hate you and everyone else who doesn\'t dig M$\'s oversized controller mm, sorry to say :(
-
All I can say is I don\'t have any beef with it when playing HALO, Rallisport Challenge, Inside Drive, and DOA3
-
hmmph, i suppose yer right jm

Because even Fish Mutants like to play games too ;)

hmm, i never thought of that
perhaps they appreciate the blur since they live underwater
*snicker*
IM JOKING, SHOOT ME!!1

Again, I have an HDTV and not me or any of my friends noticed this blur you are constantly talking about--and we have logged many hours with that game. Either you are nitpicking a screen shot or you are blowing it way out of proportion.
All of these people are PS2 or PS1 owners and after the initial adjustment period, none have any complaints about the controller--admittedly, the first night there were some very vocal dissenters, but after that, it\'s been just fun.
If nothing else, I\'m glad I have an xbox for the social aspect of it. Nearly all of PS2\'s good games are single player and once you finish a SP game, it\'s pretty much over (with a few exceptions). The xbox\'s good games also have either 4-way split screen or system link which makes it the only console I play with friends over (besides the odd showcase of ).
No game on the market does what Ralisport does. It looks wonderful in single player and supports 4-players.
-
Im totally addicted to Rallisport..... Ive bought an Xbox because of this game!
-
sorry you paid 300$ for a B rated game at best
if you wanna ignore the blur, thats fine
lie to me, but dont lie to yer self, thats terrible
rallisport does indeed look good, not great mind you, but good
but NOT good enough to warrant my interest
-
*throws porno at mm*
looks good enough for interest.. but after a while you will notice some blur..
good replay value too
*sits and enjoys it*
...
your having to defend your tastes a lot lately arent you? :)
-
Obviously I didnt buy it JUST for that game..... why would I lie to myself about the alledged blur? I just simply dont see it.
-
u do see it, yer just looking past it
thats fine, im happy for you to do so
my expectations are MUCH higher

games are not self-programmed,need time, and I\'m happy for what I\'ve seen at launch and right now...
please don\'t reply with a "wait till--insert time here":) you know that new consoles need time...PSX needed time,DC needed time,PS2 needed a lot of time...etc...but if you say me you\'re always disappointed from new consoles because you don\'t see 100% of the power and all the potential at launch, well,in this case,you\'re right!:)
-
"teh PS2 killer" needs time?
it doesnt really matter to me regardless
xbox can have 2nd place or GC can have 2nd place
what were we discussing again?
-
Why is it that you are the only one complaining about blur? I\'ve read several reviews and they all say the graphics are revolutinoary. And they are, and I\'ve never read anywhere else that implied or suggested that the game has any graphical flaws, let alone mind-numbing or game-ruining blur.
Again,I just played the game, and I don\'t see any blur on my 36" tube HDTV. And that\'s the truth.

well the PSX needed a LOt of time to show what it could do.. and thats a Very BIG PART of the reason why the PSX saw off the.......
Sega Saturn
Nintendo 64
Sega Dreamcast
this untapped power was due to Architecture of the Sony machines (PSX and PS2)
rather than the HALF @SSED attempts of the developers and their inability to uses whats their form the offset
Now what was that we kept hearing from the MicroFlop Zelots ?
"the PS2 is hard to develop for which means developers will flock to the X box because its Easy to develop for "
oh and "just wait till E3 2001
and "just wait to the japanese launch"
-
I don\'t think anyone said wait until the Jap. launch.
And show me a dev that prefers the PS2.
And the PSX had a lot more going for it than untapped power--it had 3rd party support, a very welcoming Sony (which is gone), a low price point and great launch games. And you are wrong again, the PSX was relatively easy to develop for, it was the Saturn that was the *****.
Nice arguement.
-
swatch, i like ya man, but saying there\'s no blur is ridiculous
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.psx2central.com%2Fmm%2Fblur.jpg&hash=207cbca95f5f2cfdf0896c0b44bec58353e8875d)
they use blur to save the framerate, why argue it?
do we really need 5 pages of posts debating wether or not you see the blur? its there whether you like it or not
just like PS2\'s jaggies.
low price point on the psx? yeah right, maybe shortly before the PS2 launched
-
Like I said, I don\'t see it. Of course the detail is going to lessen as you move away from the camera--is that what you mean? I see jaggies, but I really don\'t understand where you are coming from.
Anyway, the PSX was cheaper than the Saturn.
-
oh so NOW you see the blur? ;)
further away from the camera and EVERYTHING past a few feet is very different my friend.
jaggies? thats a console curse, im desensitized to them, but my Geforce returns me to reality
yeah, saturn was 399$, and i bought one day one
-
Yeah but the blur has to be there. Everything cannot be crystal clear when seen from a mile away. As you get closer to an object it increasingly becomes more detailed--this is real life I\'m talking about here. The same thing happens in this game.
Again, I have to say you are the only one that says this. Every other review has nothing negative to say about it, and no one on any forum anywhere else has mentioned this. Maybe it\'s just you. :)
But again, why so picky with the xbox? There are hundreds of graphical problems with PS2 titles. Bah!
That comment about the price was directed at ooseven\'s ridiculously flawed logic, and revisionist historical perspective.
-
picky with the xbox?
cause its "teh PS2 killer"
seriously, reviewers dont nit pick cause every review would be 4 pages long [they\'re lazy], and its hard to gives games 9\'s or 9.5\'s when blur and graphical shortcomings come to attention
im just a disgruntled gamer thats VERY hard to satisfy, thats all
two years in console marketing and development gets us blur? no excuse
There are hundreds of graphical problems with PS2 titles. Bah!
two year older technology and hardware, thats to be expected
see my /me gets [insert game here] threads in the main forum
youll see my complaining about PS2 games left and right

i know i must hand over £300 alone for the console just to make some people in here happy
WRONG
i an\'t going to shell out that amount of money on a console were i only HALF like 1 game (HALO) and even then i get motion sickness everytime i play it....

i think its a great...apart from
frame rate problems and No online Gaming or Support.
infact if there was a few more titles like this then i would consider getting a Gates box
-
I didn\'t say anything about your yastes, just your baseless argument.
_____
frame rate problems and No online Gaming or Support.
_____
And how many PS2 games boast a perfect framerate and on line gaming?
Zero.
Yet another argument completely void of logic.
Well done.
That\'s not good enough, mm. The PS2 was hyped just as much as the xbox. Where is this emotion engine that can power thousands of unique individuals thta display realistic emotions (GTA3??!?) and huge, detailed environments? Where is this machine that was supposed to be a security risk?
And reviewers didn\'t mention it because it\'s not a graphical shortcoming. It\'s persepctive and I and everyone besides you thinks it\'s one of the best looking games ever. And reviewers did nit pick pointing out that the mud looks terrible and the boundaries are too tight--they are not above looking for something negative to say. And even if it was a graphical problem, the xbox still has the best image quality of any system. And it\'s by a good margin too.
You can\'t pick on the xbox because it was hyped, because all systems have over-the-top marketing.
You completely dismiss xbox games for MINOR graphical problems, then herald a game like GTA3 as the best game evar!! That\'s no good. Games released for the xbox now do indeed look 2 years better than games released for the PS2 after the same time frame. Not to mention better than games released for PS2 now.
And I\'m going to call you on it everytime. :)
-
but how can you compare 1999 hype to 2002 hype
technology gets half as small and doubles in speed every 18 months, no?
ico > rallisport when it comes to graphics
And how many PS2 games boast a perfect framerate and on line gaming?
tony hawk 3. not bad for a three year old console, huh?
i dont really try to compare graphics between thr two. the xbox should be more capable of beating PS2. its not, though. who do we blame, M$ or developers? look at the sales charts. xbox consoles and games sales are depressing. only a fool would say the xbox cant beat the PS2 in graphics, but when will we see it?
-

THE SUMMARY !
---------------------
so i guess what your ALL saying is that (mm included)
ICO ...4 textures
Kicks
Ralisports @ss ?
....not bad for a 3 year old console :D
No wonder the Japanese won\'t buy the Flop Box...
-
rikku,
cant think of anything more witty at the moment
but that will suffice
but i see you didnt even contest that with its "4 textures and blur" still indeed beats rallisport
thank you, drive thru
-
mi thinks this all a bit silly really..... think Ill go get drunk instead, then things actually will be blurred
-
It\'s definatly the developers, not a technology flaw.
Trilinear filtering has been around ever since the TNT2 era, and was greatly improved upon during the GeForce 1/2 days. GF3 technology should be able to do Trilinear filtering with little to no performance hit, knowing it\'s a GPU, and that X-box got a PIII 733 under the hood.
I think it\'s evident that it isn\'t fair comparing PS2 to the X-box in terms of visuals. Again, your compairing 99-2001 technology, not a fair compairsen.
But, back in the day when we had those little N64 vs. PSX wars, that was bold, because Nintendo developed a console that had horrendous texture support and the majority of their games looked like ass needless to say (save the words on the more decent games) compared to PSX titles. There simply wasn\'t any excuse for subpar texture support when you have a 2 year edge over your competition.
Then, they go ahead and release a RAM pack, upping the texture memory from 4MB to 8MB. How innovative! Making up for their shortcomings almost 2 years later. You could say N64 got ownt by the PSX
-
ICO is a game dependant on a limited color base and texture set. The scope of space and gameplay is much smaller. There are no physics, or high powered animation or numerous high poly objects.
It looks good for what it is, but that\'s it. It isn\'t the graphical powerhouse that RS is.
-
watch, i\'ll pretend you didnt just say that
or in essence, pacman > ico
:)
-
No, it looks better than pacman. :)
But really it not doing nor has to keep track of nearly as many variables as RS does.

Actually I think it rather silly/stupid to compare the two graphically.
IMO, ICO was overrated. Don\'t get me wrong, it was a good game, just not worth 50$.
-
50$
last game i paid 50$ for was ridge racer V
not again, if i can help it
-
Last time I payed less than 50$ for a game was back in the DC days. 40$ was the norm...I ended up with over 30 games, it was beautiful.
I\'m finding myself becoming extremely picky nowadays over 10 extra dollars.

Used price right? How did you already get a used one? It\'s only been out like a week...
If used, do they come with instrustions, cases, and all?
There is a CD Warehouse about 20 miles from where I live, I\'ll check it out soon. My PS2 needs some more games anyway...
-
they sell PS2, xbox, and GC games for $24.99
they are techically used, but they ONLY take games in mint condition, plus most of them are stolen anyways as they pay 15$ cash to anyone who brings some in. i have gotten over 25 games from them over the last 6 months and not found as much as dust on the disks. most of the cases still have that sticker that runs down the seam. its cut so the disk can be put behind the counter, but it shows how fast they get stock. plus they take reservations, so i just email them with a list of upcoming games and they call me when they come in.
i got gunvalkyrie and blood omen 2 yesterday for 25$ and 17$ today after using another punch card.
they have a punch card that if u fill up gets u $8.99 yer next purchase, hence my $17.00 VF4.
best thing is, i beat the games and then sell them on ebay for no less than $34 usually
-
Well, my PS2 will be getting a number of games this weekend...;)
-
and here i am stuck paying $100+ for games :(

Nope ooseven:) PSX was the simplest piece of hardware compared to both Sega Saturn and Nintendo64 and still,it needed a lot of time(4-5 years) to be almost fully pushed(if you want, you could consider the PS2 architecture like the Saturn architecture and the XBox architecture like PSX architecture, with the difference that XBox is a lot more powerful in comparison to PS2 and has more features!-->and this makes it complex...) XBox is not so easy to be fully pushed, though it\'s easier to develop for than PS2!
XBox is a complex piece of hardware in a certain sense...the NV2a is a lot powerful and has a lot of features, plus the UMA architecture and the built-in HD(and this last one is another thing you have to worry about...if you wanna take advantage of it).
XBox is more powerful and has more things you have to worry about(if you wanna create a game which really takes advantage of each single spec of the XBox).
Now what was that we kept hearing from the MicroFlop Zelots ?
"the PS2 is hard to develop for which means developers will flock to the X box because its Easy to develop for "
oh and "just wait till E3 2001

Why you call XBox fans MicroFlop zealot? I\'m happy for what I\'ve seen at Launch,I\'m happy for what I\'m seeing now...there\'re interesting games coming out(they seem impressive,let\'s wait and see)...Project Ego,Brute Force,SegaGT2002(can\'t wait to see Ninja Gaiden,MGS2X,GP4,Doom3,etc)...it\'s only the beginning of this console...so...I really don\'t understand your useless sarcasm ooseven!
"the PS2 is hard to develop for which means developers will flock to the X box because its Easy to develop for "
That\'s what members like Hyper had been saying for months and months:)...
...devs can\'t ignore the huge PS2 user base(PS2 is 2 years old) and XBox needs time to reach a solid user base so that dev can give this new console the attention it deserves...the current situation won\'t and can\'t last for ever dear friends :)

The PSX was more difficult to get \'juice\' out of it.
But it Got the Support form the Developers as well as out selling the compention rather than the same way that the PS2 is doing NOW !
but heck who cares what i say or think this thread has GONE on Too long !
After all it was just a Piss Poor excuse for PStwo to do yet another one of his UBER PRO X BOX Advertising Threads !
-
PSX was not easy to get juice out of..
It was easy to program for, but not max out.
Why?
Cuz it did not let the developers code ON THE METAL (like PS2 does).. Every game had to be run through SCEI\'s "programs".
And 3D was a new thing aswell. Not the same thing anymore.
Developers got what they wanted, a console that lets them code on the metal. (PS2)
-
but BizioEE is correct..
Saturn was a ***** to develop for, N64 was more complicated than PSX
PSX was VERY simple due to the libraries Sony released.. but Fastson is also correct in that, that is the reason it took so long to be maxed out
(although around about the middle of the consoles lifetime, graphics stopped improving markedly IMO)

Yes, Bizio is correct about programing ease PSX vs Saturn & N64 but the comparison to this generations of consoles is way off. Both Saturn & N64 were crippled by last minute design changes made for the purpose of distancing themselves graphically from the PSX. Complex? No, not in the sense that once programers knew how the machines worked making better looking games just got easier. The design of both machines was understood early on to be poor and a pain in the ass to develop for, period. There was no going around the built in obstacles and settling for graphics well below what these machines were capable of.
Also, as fastson already pointed out, the transition to 3D was relatively brand new to most console developers with the release of PSX, by itself extending the growth cycle more than we should expect for a console using similar architecture today (i.e. DC or xbox).
Xbox UMA?, I\'m not looking for a whole lot of gain there from solving its ‘complexity\'. It wasn\'t invented for the xbox and has been around for a few years now already. A little extra performance squeeze left, sure. Major leaps from launch titles? Don\'t see any reason why I should think so.
NV2A? I can\'t deny xbox could have some major horsepower in store there that we haven\'t seen yet, it could also be another straw dog. Given past the performance of both MS and Nivida at delivering on the advertised goods... don\'t hold your breath.
-
The PSX was more difficult to get \'juice\' out of it. -ooseven
Sorry buddy, but you\'re wrong on this one. The Saturn was probably one of the most difficult systems to program for in existance. Additionaly, the shortcomings of the N64 (namely expensive carts and fees imposed on by Ninendo), drove many developers away. The fact that the PSX was super cheap to develop for, had plenty of support from Sony, and was incredibly easy to work with, many many games were made for it.
Where you got the idea that the PSX was the most difficult is beyond me.
In any case, you\'re right, this has gone on long enough.
