OK, here\'s the deal. I\'m putting this up for discussion about the flopbox:
According to the latest numbers in North America, are about 1.65 million Xboxes and 1.3 to 1.4 million GameCubes. So, Microsoft is clearly ahead on the home front. But that\'s not what I see as the biggest problem facing MS.
Let\'s take a closer look at that Xbox number. If I\'m not mistaken, didn\'t MS sell 1.5 million of those Xboxes by year end 2001? If that\'s the case, then in the first 2 months of 2002, they have only sold 150,000 more. That\'s an average of only 18,500 per week.
Now Japan. They launched with 250,000 and sold 123,000 over the launch weekend with some saying it looks bad to only sell half of their low launch allotment. Others say give them a chance, they did better than expected.
Now Europe. They launch on March 14 with 1.5 million consoles for them. The word out of Europe is that the Xbox is too expensive at 60% more than the PS2 and double the Gamecube when it comes out in May. Granted, there are many Xbox fans in Europe and it will do a lot better than in Japan. However, it\'s no longer Christmas in Europe. Sony releases MGS2 in a week in Europe with FF X about a week after the Xbox launch. Sony also just slashed prices on it\'s greatest hits games as well.
So, here are the questions:
How can MS sell 1.5 million consoles at launch in Europe when it took 6 weeks to do that in their own home park and during the Christmas season?
If they sell only half or less of the 1.5 million at launch, won\'t people say they look like bigger fools than the launch in Japan? In other words, are expectations getting too high for Europe?
And, MS has projected that they expect to sell 6 million consoles world wide by end of June. Well folks, today they have sold less than 1.8 million so far in NA and Japan. That gives them only 4 months to sell 4.2 million more to reach their goal. That\'s more than a million a month. Sony doesn\'t sell anywhere near a million a month now and is always outselling the Xbox. It outsold the Xbox during it\'s launch in North America even and probably will outsell it during it\'s launch in Europe as well.
How is MS going to ever reach it\'s target of 6 million by end of June?

I know that all of these important questions should be answered in what would seem to be an educated way. However I am to busy playing the best system on the market so I\'ll have to get back with you on this topic at another date. :D
*pushes keyboard away and picks up dual shock controller to continue playing FFX*

flopbox? Bill Gates the most richest man in the world and you think Bill will give up that easy? I think he doesn\'t even care if he loses some money in this venture. Nothing ventured nothing gained! IMO Bill Gates knows this video business is a good source of residual income.

You posted this over at Gamerweb...you go under the name Delboy or something like that?
Anyway, I\'d love to sit here and guess how it will be pulled off like the rest of you, but I have to go to work.
My guess is, Gates will buy them himself if he has too;)

1.5 at the close of 2001 was the number shipped, sold through December was 1.1 mil. I hate to point it out because PS2 haters have done the same thing ever since the system hit the 15 mil mark
Just trying to clear up a little confusion is all. Or have I made it worse?
MS is in it for the long haul so it really doesn\'t matter how foolish they do or don\'t look in Europe/Japan even good ol\' USofA for at least another year. Don\'t expect MS to call it quits until xbox starts getting regularly outsold by PSone
-
and that is NOT inconceivable mind you
-
No, not at all. PSone nearly did it last holiday season. It\'s just that the PSone numbers were world wide vs xbox NA only.
That\'s why I was
-
That somewhat suprises me. I know X-box didn\'t do very well in Japan so far, but I didn\'t think that they only sold around 1.1 million at all. Thanks for the research though.
This isn\'t very pleasent for Microsoft I can imagine. And with the European launch near by, I don\'t see it getting much better. The hype is big and people are unimpressed (we have many stands here in Switzerland, which aren\'t played that much though. The majority playes the DC, PS2 and even PSX while X-box stand is empty). I can only imagine how the situation will be and it\'s nothing good if I may add.
I don\'t think Microsoft will dump the Xbox though, even if it sells really bad. Sony is going on a head-on collision at the latest when PS3 will launch (Internet plans, networking, e-commerce) and Microsoft has A LOT to loose. They know this and they will fight for it.
Hey Heretic, didn\'t you once write a long post about the future plans of both Sony and Microsoft? I don\'t think many paid much attention to it back then, but as more and more information are released on the future plans of both companies - it\'s becoming more relevant by the day.
-
Funny thing about that seven, I started to dig through back pages to put a link to it here but decided not to after all even though it is so relevant to the topic. Afraid someone would drag it to the top I suppose. No time or inclination to respond right now if it suddenly became ‘hot\'. Though I don\'t really think it would be any more popular than it was the first time around. The kind of topic MS fans would rather see die. Ya know?

every Big Name has a Flop.....look at the Owner of the WWF.....Vinnie Mac......the XFL Flopped........maybe the X-box is Bill Gates Flop......

what do you think Bill Gates is on some sort of one man crusade? He\'s gonna start knocking on everyones doors saying "Hello. My. Name. Is. Bill. And I. Am . A Recovering. Crack ad-dict. To help me. Recover. I Am. Selling. My. Xbox\'s. And. Some. Magazine. Sub-scrip-tions. For. The Low. Low. Price. Of $300.. Please. Help. Me out."
?? it has nothing to do with the fact that Bill Gates is the richest man in the world. And even so, Microsoft arent even the biggest company in the world.
-
Bobs, I have no idea what you trying to say. ?
-
Bill Gates= Richest man in world and owns a little company that makes chity software program called "Windows"

Microsoft won\'t quit on the XBox, why? Because this is yet another way of making sure all mankind has a Microsoft OS in their home, first it was the PC now it is the Console. And since Mickysoft thinks this is the best way to invade the joe-six-packs home, i think MS is willin to lose hundreds of millions to win big in the future, 5-7 years from now
I grew up on Consoles, my kids will grow up on them, i can\'t imagine not owning one in the future.. see my point? This console business will just grow, i won\'t be giving up Vidgames just because i hit 30 or 40, are you guys?
-
ummm Chrono, isn\'t MSN the number 2 ISP in the country now? I hardly call that a flop. And Ultimate TV is a flop in the same sense as Tivo.

MS a little company?
Uh....no.
-
depends how you look at things: in amount of employees, I think Microsoft is very small compared to Sony. Not that it matters though, what\'s important is the money and the earnings. ;)
