Title: March Madness
Post by: unfocused on March 10, 2002, 04:39:59 PM
So how does everyone feel about the bracket this year?  I think a few teams got screwed, Butler is a good example.  I also think Oklahoma should be a 1 seed and not Cinci.  Any predictions?

I predict Miami will lose in the first round.

Post by: shockwaves on March 10, 2002, 07:45:34 PM
I think the bracket this year is horrible.  The West is stacked.  They have as much talent as any other two bracket sections.  Hell, they have the champs of the Big 10, CUSA, the WCC,  the A10, the Pac-10, and the Big 12.  All in one section.  That\'s insane.  Gonzaga got screwed.  They deserved a 3 or 4 seed at least.  I think it\'s a joke that they are put at 6.  Hell, they were ranked #6 in the country, and they get a 6 seed?  That\'s unheard of.  Oklahoma should have been a #1 seed.  But instead, not only are they a #2 seed, but they are placed in the hardest part of the bracket.  Gonzaga should have been a higher seed, and they are also put in the hardest part of the bracket.

On top of that, I think Butler and Bowling Green got screwed even more.  Both deserved to be in, and aren\'t.  Butler had 25 wins, including ones over Indiana, Ball St., and Purdue.  Bowling Green had 24, and they also beat some damn good teams, including several in the tournament.  I think it\'s a joke that underachieving teams get in over them just because of the conference they play in.

Anyway, I have no idea who I\'ll pick.  I\'m likely taking the Zags in the west though, just because I want to see them prove to all these idiots what a mistake they made.

Post by: Fayded on March 11, 2002, 06:55:58 PM
Ohio State doesn\'t have any chance of getting there. They might make it to the second round, but thats where the fun will end for them. Oklahoma will come out of the West. Cincy is way too overrated for a #1 seed. They play in a weak conference, where their only competition is Marquette. They\'ll lose to Oklahoma in the Elite 8. Kansas will beat Miss. St. to advance to the Final Four. Duke has it easy, i hate the selection comitee. All the business about trying to keep the teams as close to home as possible. They left Duke with an easy path, except for USC in the Elite 8. Maryland might have some speed bumps along the way but i think they\'ll make it in. In the Final Four I see Kansas beating Maryland, and Duke beating Oklahoma is a close game. Oklahoma is way underrated, they\'re a team to watch. Then in the championship game Kansas will beat Duke 81-76. Kansas can stop Duke everywhere on the floor. Then they got the offense to put points on the board.

Its possible but don\'t act like its a fact, you\'ll just possibly make a fool of yourself.  And even if they did lose I wouldn\'t be mad, I didn\'t expect them to do this good this season anyway.  Oh and from some article I read it had Ohio State ranked as #7 on chance to win it all, now a crappy team wouldn\'t be honored with something like this, well then again Cincy gets #1 even though they aren\'t anything special.

Bozco I\'m not trying to sound like it\'s a fact, but i feel that Mizzou has a good enough team to go somewhere in the tournament. They weren\'t ranked #3 earlier this season for nothing.

Tony, Kansas has the best team in the nation, that can match up with anyone. Whether they win it all is another story. And yes, Cincy is ****. Logan is good, but he\'s their only bright spot. Cincy would get torn apart if they played in the Big 12 or ACC.
Title: March Madness
Post by: unfocused on March 12, 2002, 05:47:55 PM
Duke winning it all? Uh no.  First of all Duke won\'t even make it to the Final Four since they will lose to Alabama in the Elite 8.  Cinci is weak like I\'ve been telling Tony(shockwaves for those of you who don\'t know him) for a long time.  They play Marquette and Marquette only.  They lost to Louisville.  Louisville didn\'t even make the Tourney so that is pretty pathetic.  Kansas will not win because of two reasons...they expect to win....and they will under-estimate opponents.  Im not saying they won\'t make it to the Final Four...but they will not win the whole thing let alone get to the title game.

Cool, but you can\'t say Ohio St. won\'t be a tough game for them.  They did win the Big 10 championship and many sports analyst have picked them to do very well.  I see them making it to the Elite 8, but I have Arizona beating them there.  Oh and I think Kansas is the team to beat I have them goin all the way.
Title: March Madness
Post by: ROL Jamas on March 12, 2002, 06:23:19 PM
Alabama - will lose to Oklahoma State in the 2nd round of the tournament.

Duke - will lose to USC in the Sweet 16, because USC has tenacity, and can play with anybody.

Kansas - will lose in the Sweet 16, too. Illinois will take Kansas out, after taking out Creighton, who two days earlier beat Florida in the first round of the tournament. I\'ve been following the Big Eight/Big XII since I was 6 years old, and i\'ve seen Kansas play in the tournament. The fact is, every time they go in, they choke. They\'ve been the #1 seed Four or Five times in the past 9 years, and not once have they made the Final Four...well, they did in 1993, but that was the last time. Every other time, they\'ve been upset by a good team, or they lost in the 2nd round. They do have an excuse, the year that Arizona won the tournament, they beat Kansas in the Sweet 16. Another year though, they lost to Rhode Island, a 9 seed, in the 2nd round. Granted, that team had Lamar Odom, but that loss was inexcusable, and made the Big Eight look REALLY bad.

For all of you who think Kansas is going all the way? Don\'t give your hopes up. If Kansas goes all the way, I will eat my Cubs hat. Kansas has had MANY lapses during the season, even in the games they won. Do any of you remember the Kansas Nebraska game? If they run into a 3 point shooting team who\'s having an alright day shooting, like Nebraska did that day, they will not be so lucky come tournament time.

See Yuz.

Hmmm.... I REALLY DISAGREE THERE. Duke clearly has the best team in the nation, and Kansas is trying to keep up with Holy Cross right now.

--------------------

So Kansas wins.... but didn\'t even look close to being any kind of best team in the nation.....

--------------------

And ROL Jamas... they lost... at least USC made it interesting sending it to OT... but the better team prevailed... kudos to UNCW....
Title: March Madness
Post by: ROL Jamas on March 14, 2002, 07:42:08 PM
Alright, Vapor, here\'s the deal.

Kansas won, as much it pains me to say that. Kansas probably does have the best team in the nation, better than duke, but they weren\'t playing as a team today, and Holy Cross made Kansas play to HC\'s pace. Top that with some great play by HC and Hinrich getting hurt, and you get a close game.

UNC Willmington was NOT the better team. USC had the better team, but just like Kansas, started slow out of the gates. They DID show their tenacity, as they were down by 19, then came back, and sent it into overtime. They got a little sloppy and lost it, but they never quit, and made it interesting until the very end.

And, since all of my pick\'em tourneys are ****ed up the arse (Marquette and USC out...I had them going to the final four), I\'m just goona be a fan again...GO CREIGHTON!

See Yuz.

Post by: Fayded on March 14, 2002, 08:09:04 PM
I had Pepperdine and Marquette going to the Sweet 16. Then USC beating Duke. Bah, I\'m all messed up. I got the rest of the games right tho :D

What player does Duke have that Kansas can\'t stop? Hinrich is quick enough to guard Williams, or Boschee even can. Which ever one of them doesn\'t guard Williams can guard Duhon. Collison is good enought to stop Boozer, and Gooden can stop Dunleavy. Then you have three quality freshamns off the bench, especially Simien, he\'ll be awesome in a year or two.
Title: March Madness
Post by: ROL Jamas on March 14, 2002, 08:12:51 PM
Fayded...no.

Alright, Hinrich - Injured. Collison was shut down the entire game, and the only reason WHY Kansas won was due to them getting every call like they do in every game they\'re supposed to win, and Gooden being able to do whatever he wanted without being called for anything.

Kansas is good when they play together, but they don\'t know how to combine all of their talent.

Kansas will be gone next Thursday.

See Yuz.

HAHA!

Pepperdine? Give me a break people. People just hate on Wake Forest too much. I knew Wake Forest was gonna take them. And I see no way how Kansas can even compare with Duke. Duke\'s starting five will all be first round draft picks easily. They have three all americans and are steamrolling over winthrop. Kansas is overrated and will not make it to the final four... and lucky to make it to the elite eight.
Title: March Madness

Bah, I\'m doing horrible in this thing.  I decided to chagne my picks from what I had in other brackets I was doing.  In my others I\'m undefeated on the day.  In this one, that\'s not the case.

Well, I hate to say this Fayded, but Kansas is not even close to the best team in the country.  They struggled against Holy Corss, and were lucky to come away with the win.  If they look like that against a 16 seed, how will they look when they play a real team, like Illinois.  And besides the fact that Kansas is known for choking, their team is also completely overrated.  Most talent in the country?  No way.  Not even close.  Infact, there are multiple teams with more talent, maybe even including Illinois.

On another note, my home town team plays tonight (and is likely to get crushed too).  The Siena Saints, play in game champions, take on Maryland.  Everyone watch that...yeah.

Only missing 3 picks= cool.  Stupid Marquette, USC, and Gonzaga.  Oh well I had USC losing to IU, Marquette losing to Kentucky and Gonzaga losing to Arizona.  So it doesn\'t matter too much.  What does matter...not putting my best bracket on the Tourney pick \'em.  I picked the non upset bracket for that one I guess.  Go IU ending their horrible first round jinx!

My bracket is ****ed up the anus. I have no chance of getting anywhere, but i guess thats what i get for not picking any upsets.

And shock, you wanna talk about overrated teams, look at Cincy. They play in a weak conference and got lucky by getting a #1 seed. Kansas, however, is not overrated. If they play together, nobody can stop them. I bet you haven\'t watched Kansas play a game this season, if you have you probably watched them play Oklahoma or Holy Cross. Look what they did to Missouri in the second half of a game about a month ago. They DESTROYED them. You always say how they\'re choke artists, what are you gonna do if they win it all? Eat your words, just like you did when the d-backs beat your Yanks.

Cincy got robbed against UCLA. Right before the end of regulation the Cincy player got fouled and all he had to do was make 1 and there would be no OT. And Cincy would still be alive. Oh well. Here\'s a pretty good article about Steve Logan.

PITTSBURGH -- As Steve Logan stepped onto the Mellon Arena court Sunday -- amid the thunderous cheers of thousands of tourney-mad fans, a few boos from the Pac-10 partisans, and the caterwauling of Coach Hugs -- he only heard the voice of the one who is not there.

It was the same voice he had heard all season, the one staying on him to keep up grades, to stay out of trouble -- just like the voice he heard when she used to be here.

Be a good man, Stevie. Don\'t make me come down there.

When he looked up in the stands to catch a family member\'s eye, his small smile of acknowledgment hid the gnawing grief that his grandma Shirley Logan wasn\'t there to smile back. And when the end of a season came suddenly in double overtime, she also wasn\'t there to offer support.

Shirley Logan lives only in his memories, no longer bustling about her kitchen in the downstairs half of their home in Cleveland. Shirley sat at her table by the front window every day, right the shades all the way up as she waited for him to come home. Who called him by his middle name, Deontay, as she hugged him tight when he ducked in downstairs to tell her how his day went. Who always had an encouraging word and a plateful of fried chicken ready. Who made him swear he would earn his college degree before he pocketed his first NBA penny.

At the core of all the happiness and promise in Logan\'s life is this steady sense of grief. Every school record, national award and tourney win is tinged with sorrow. Senior Day was steeped in sadness, his family never more painfully aware of Shirley\'s absence. When he went home to hold his newborn son, Steven Deontay Logan II, in mid-February, the shades were still pulled down on grandma\'s window. Steve still can\'t bring himself to go downstairs when he comes back home to their two-family home in Cleveland. One month after this coming Wednesday, Logan\'s 22nd birthday, will be the anniversary of her death.

When Shirley began to starve herself, flatly refusing to eat anything, institutional slop or otherwise, Grandpa Scott wrung his hands, stunned by her sudden, incongruous surrender of will. And Steve left his Bearcats right after they made the Sweet 16 a year ago, after drubbing Kent State last March, jetting out on the red-eye from San Diego. Just as Grandma had buoyed him with her gentle words of encouragement, Steve would help heal her with advice of his own.

It was a cruel reversal of fortune: Less than a year after a stroke from which she seemed to be steadily recovering, the woman who had been a longtime nursing home aide herself was now bedridden. Shirley\'s diabetes had reared its ugly, pitiless head, rendering her once busy feet gangrenous. Convinced the doctors would amputate, leaving her bound to a wheelchair, Shirley saw months of hard, hopeful work infected by futility.

When his mother called a month later, on April 20, Steve already knew before she spoke the words: Early morning rings never bear good news. And he was crushed. "She was his heart," said Steve\'s mom, Melody Adamson. For two days, Steve couldn\'t speak to anyone except his older sister Lakeisha, who shouldered the funeral arrangements, cooked the food for their grieving relatives, and even combed Grandma\'s hair before the burial.

"Lakeisha showed me how to be strong, and take one day at a time," says Steve. "She was the big key to getting me through my Grandma\'s death."

Logan needs that strength to helm a Cincinnati program pockmarked by violence and drugs. The second-highest career scorer for the Bearcats, second only to Oscar Robertson, he himself was charged with a DUI in August of 2000.

So while a career ends, and the titles continue to pour in -- two-time Conference USA Player of the Year, All-American, Player of the Year finalist -- Logan looks to June, not for the NBA Draft, but for his graduation day.

"This whole season is inspired by my grandma," says Logan. "She\'s the one who started me on this course. It\'s going to be tough to go through graduation without her. I wish she could be there to watch me finish."

Logan smiles once again. But now, it is the smile of a man armed with an unshakeable faith.

"She\'ll be there with me," he says. He lifts up his shirt to reveal an image etched onto his abdomen. Shirley Logan\'s kind face peeks out from underneath his jersey. "R.I.P. Grandma, 4-20-01," reads the tattooed inscription. "Promise kept."

On two of my brackets I\'ve got 2 Final Four picks left and on the other 2 I\'ve got 3.  Hopefully Illinois can beat Kansas.  Fayded if you think Kansas is such a great team then why do they struggle against weak teams?  For example Holy Cross, Nebraska, Ball State...?

I dunno why they struggle against weak teams, but they do great against tough ones. They tore apart Stanford. Illinios might give thema challenge, but they should win. Why does everyone doubt Kansas? Everyone is against them.

My Final Four teams are all left, but the early rounds killed me.

Yeah..well...blah.

And Fayded, why did you have to post that entire thing? You could have just linked us, but yeah. Cincy did not get robbed, it\'s the way the game goes, the Refs let the teams play.

As for Nebraska, we\'re goona be awesome next year. Can anybody say 11th seed in the Big Dance? Speaking of which, Go Mizzou. Sure, I hate their guts, but go Big XII, representin. Kansas is always evil, but against Illinois, go Kansas...

*laughs at SEC*

God, I just about died when Jason Williams hit that 3 and got fouled...but when he got to the free throw line, I started to scream "FSU! FSU!" at the tv as he was about to take it...sure as ****, it worked, Boozer can\'t put the putback in, and it\'s over -- The #1 Seeded Duke Blue Devils are out of of the tournament.

Simply amazing...Oh, but in other news, Sooners vs. Mizzou to see who goes to the Final Four out of the west, just more proof that the Big XII Is THE best conference out there, and it\'s not because of those texas teams.

See Yuz.

Says the Oklahoma dissing man from Texas.

Oklahoma? Soft? HAH. Play some of the stingiest defense out there, beat Kansas AND Maryland this year, and have won 12 straight games, and came out of the toughest region in the tournament to the Final Four. Yeah, REAL soft.

Lonny Baxter? Soft? WHAT? That\'s just...not even funny.

If anybody\'s soft, it IS Kansas. They are the most prone to the upset, as they proved this year, as to not winning games they should have, and bearly winning games they should have easily won by 20.

Sooners beat Kansas in the Final to win the National Championship. Nuff\' Said.

See Yuz.
