 The xbox tank is coming!!
It\'s over. Two years of cat-fighting, in-fighting, out-fighting, rhetoric, disbelief, acquiescence and vitriol comes to a climax today as Xbox finally wades into Europe. Ending what is likely to be the headiest period of anticipation for the games industry for many moons to come, "the most powerful games console on Earth" arrives in its final launch territory to what will almost certainly be a rapturous welcome.
The hype surrounding the machine is unparalleled, and while Microsoft is refusing to release pre-order or launch figures for the UK, or anywhere else in Europe for that matter, there\'s certainly no denying that Xbox has grabbed the media\'s attention. TV and radio crews were clammering for interviews today with practically anybody to do with Xbox, ahead of launch parties in England, Scotland and Ireland tonight to celebrate the release of the machine.
"It\'s a very exciting time," says UK Xbox marketing chief Richard Teversham. "After two years working on the project, tomorrow we\'re going to actually have something in the shops that is solid and real and consumers are going to get their hands on it. That\'s exciting."
Even with the launch out of the way, Teversham is under no illusions that this is only the beginning. "It\'s going to be a very tough battle, but at the moment people are feeling good about what we\'ve achieved so far. We\'ve got to keep on going and never let up in a way," he says.
And while the suits work behind the scenes, the men on the street are making it all happen at ground level. Yep, that picture is of an Xbox tank, supposedly delivering the first shipment of Xbox hardware to stores in central London. The driver, who refused to be named for "security reasons", has been driving an armoured personnel carrier around London all day. "People have been astonished that a tank can actually go down through here on the bus lanes," he says. "It\'s been pretty good, it\'s turned a lot of heads. It\'s giving Xbox a lot of publicity, which is all good."
With the hype in place, the message now is "come and have a go," says Teversham. You\'ll have plenty of games before 2003 if you do. "We\'re going to have 60 games launched on Xbox by the end of June and we\'re going to have hundreds for Christmas," he adds.
Teversham describes Xbox as the most exciting thing he\'s ever done. "I do think this is a beginning of a new era of gaming," he says, "and through all the doubts I think Xbox has proved itself. If we were sitting here with a box that didn\'t stand up on its own, then I\'d be more nervous than I am, but we\'re taking nothing for granted. We still want to do a great job for everybody."
Rock on. Xbox is finally in the UK. As of tomorrow you\'ll be able to play Halo, Gotham, Dead or Alive 3 and the rest of what amounts to the strongest launch line-up of this generation. We\'ll have a full report tomorrow from the Xbox London launch event at the Oxford Street Virgin Megastore tonight. Hopefully see you there!

-
When I see those pics, tell me: should I laugh or should I cry ?
-
And Microsoft\'s 5 year $500,000 marketing budget is depleted. It\'s too bad that the tank will probably scare the Europeans more than promote the Xbox. :D
-

sorry BUB but its a total failure here in Scotland
there is NO media attention and also the papers won\'t have it tommorow due to the Lockerbie appeal trial that was anounced today at 10am GMT.
there is Little on Radio
Nothing in the Papers
and as For TV
also there is no queues and as more most the people in Game or EB are either just playing the booth and or LOOKing at the Price and walking away.
[ooseven Christens the UK launch as the by the BACK Door Launch]
[piss poor (Japanese) ooseven 2002]
[Back Door (UK, will change to piss poor mark 2 if the thing takes a noise dive) ooseven 2002]
hey may be it will pick up ........but as far as i can see most of the shops here in Glasgow have been DEAD !
nothing like last Friday when people where queueing for the doors to open to get MGS2.
-
oh and to the Zelots here ....Flame me if you want
i don\'t care as in this case i have a exclusive first hand accound of the situation here in SCOTLAND !
-
Oh good god, they tried to tie all that crap in with that "14.3, Christmas Day" chit. Lame\'o.
I love the TV commercial, though, excellent :)
I tried out an XBox for the first time this morning, and I really wonder if M$ got their vibration technology from a sex toy manufacturer... vrrr... might feel good for someone when applied to the proper spot, but my hands got sore pretty quick while playing Rallisport... This was irrelevant to the thread, but anywhooz *back to work*

Those guys getting out of the tank look like members of the Taliban...
-
even if they are usually full of ****, the dutch paper \'de telegraaf\'
is reporting that teh dutch Xbox launch has failed
source: http://www.telegraaf.nl/digilink/teksten/digi.box.xbox.spelcomputer.introductie.html
kind early to say?
-
I just checked the newspapers here. Not much about the sales, but there is an article about the Xbox. It will be interesting to watch the news to night.. they might have some news too.
-
ok ive seen lame and im no fanboy
but thats the stupidest way to market the xbox imo
it has nothing to do with tanks and the tank isnt cheap at that
why waste all that money when a mag ad probaly would have gotten more of a point across :(
-
attention maybe?
Although I do agree with you that there would have been better ways to market the consoles launch. But hey, you only learn with mistakes, right? ...
-
They said on the news here that the launch was a big expensive flop over here.
-
Come to think of it after looking at the pictures that isn\'t a tank at all but an armored personel carrier. Sublime you are right tanks aren\'t cheap, but this isn\'t even a tank. I am surprised the treads didn\'t tear up the street!
Anyway, that is a lame marketing attempt IMHO.

havent some german austrian and swiss retail stores stopped selling xboxes and are sending their xbox shipments back to microsoft if true all i cant say is HA HA Ha Ha
-
can\'t comment about that on Swiss side, but if this is true (which I doubt), I\'ll be back in a few hours to confirm that.
Anyway, there wasn\'t a single thing on the news about Xbox. Makes you wonder, doesn\'t it?
-
This will be good for nintendo and sony
I have the feeling that the GC is going to be a major success here in holland (europe) I checked and they have many pre-orders and it\'s launch line up isn\'t too shabby either.
