Oddworld Interview
Gamesdomain posted an interview with Lorne Lanning & Sherry McKenna from Oddworld Inhabitants, which oddly enough centers around Oddworld (who\'da thunk it?). Here\'s a crunchy little morsel from it:
Q: Why did you choose to develop for Xbox rather than PlayStation2?
LL: We were on PS2 originally and we were just very dissatisfied with the structural architecture and the final image quality. And, we had hoped that it would have been something that we didn\'t end up see it being. That doesn\'t mean that we didn\'t think that great games wouldn\'t be created on PS2, it just meant that we didn\'t want to build them there because we saw the capacity of the machine would max out sooner than what we wanted to achieve in a 128-bit era.
heres a summary
1. bill offered us loads of cash and 51% of ours souls back
2. were lazy developers with little patience
2. we wanted to sell 1/10th of what we could have sold on the PS2 platform
and what makes them think that the xbox wont be maxed out in 2-3 years? dont get me wrong, i totally enjoyed munch\'s oddysee, but these guys are talking like thier paid to

Munch doesnt even look that good graphically anyway :)
-
OR they could be telling the truth...either way you wanna look at it...;)

It could be taken a number of ways, but they all lean positively on Xbox...
What made you bring this up??

I finish the game once and some of the levels are graphically great.
-

I\'d rather think not after playing graphical more impressive games on PS2. What makes you think it wouldn\'t look as good on PS2 (despite the developers having problems with the hardware)?

pretty much all this...
We were on PS2 originally and we were just very dissatisfied with the structural architecture and the final image quality. And, we had hoped that it would have been something that we didn\'t end up see it being.
But there is no way of knowing for sure, so I would think it rather pointless to argue...
-
but Rikku, I\'m not argueing. I was just interested in your reasons to believe such. ;)
BTW: I thought I read once that Munch Inhab... didn\'t even write the 3d engine themself? Can someone confirm this? I\'m too lazy to search the internet for old articles...
-
Well, I gave you my reason why...
I thought for sure you would bring up your Performance Analyzer babble again...I\'m rather suprised.;)
-
hey MM you forgot pints 4...... 5.......6
- "we couldn\'t be arsed writing some desent gameplay so we just choise to jumpship and blame that !
- Have you seen my Hat ?....its made of money !
- So this is the game that meant to look better than the X box ! how Pathetic (sorry thats a E3 2001 refrence !)
-
After my second try of the game I really enjoyed it. I don\'t think I\'ll ever want to play the game again, but it was graphically good, funny and fun.
And yes it would\'ve looked better on the xbox. You put ANY dev on both systems and all things being equal, the product will always look and run better on the xbox. Sure Square will make their PS2 game look better than Acclaim on xbox, but 1 for 1, xbox for graphics/sound/framerate/etc.

it better look better, two years worth of technology should be a world of difference, now about that 30 fps ordeal *cough*
