Woo Hoo!
Note to all those that believe in the "build-it-yourself" philosophy. . . I don\'t care.
Here\'s my CPU, a HP pavilion 780n :

Here\'s my monitor, a HP pavilion f70 :

Eventually I might get a better sound card, and in about 2 years or so I\'ll be getting an updated video card, but basically this should hold me for another 4-or-so years, based on my past computer purchases.

We have a 7955, what are the features on urs?
-
thats one sweet pc u gots there
-
Building your own PC is a much better way of doing things, not only is it cheaper, but you get to pick what parts go into your comp.
But anyway, that PC looks pretty good. Although you\'ll need a new video card soon. GF2 MX400, ugh.
My current comp:
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4ghz
MSI K7T266 Pro
256mb PC2100 DDR RAM @ CAS2
nVidia GeForce 3 Titanium 500
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0
Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro
Some crap monitor
Cable modem
Soon I will be upgrading to:
AMD Athlon XP (Thoroughbred)
or I might hold out a bit longer and get a ClawHammer. But those won\'t be out until the beginning of next year. I can\'t wait that long. :(
An extra 256 RAM
Somewhere along the line, a GeForce 4 Titanium 4600
Some more/better fans (running at ~140 degrees farenheit at the moment :/ )
Another hard drive

sorry I felt like nitpicking :p
congrats anyway

I\'ve never had any problems with HP. Plus if everything else is HP, (like my printer & scanner), then everything is all dandy.
Gateway, on the other hand was the worst choice in PC\'s I could have ever made.
-
What was the total cost?
-
I spent less than half of that HP, with similar options (AMD 1.4 with 1 gig of DDR ram, 64 megs of DDR ram NVidia GTS 2 video card).
As far as I recall from Sharky Extreme, AMD 1.4 processor beats out the Pentium 1.7 processor in office apps (like Photshop 6) but not with games. That\'s why I own a PSX, PS2, GC, N64, Saturn and DC for games. :)
The advantage with building your own : upgrades are cheap. Replace the chip and motherboard is the norm.
For pre-built name brands - sorry, gotta buy the whole package. :)
-
sorry, I know this is not the thread for this but...
I\'ve got an AMD athalon XP1800.... 1.8 GHZ, right?
but my resources say it\'s running at 1.52 GHZ. Is that normal?

Yes. That is correct. BUT.....
.....don\'t let mHz or gHz numbers fool you. That is not necessarilly the true measure of its power.
Here\'s a review and comparison of your CPU to Pentium. Enjoy it coz you made a wise purchase. :)
Please note, that your 1.52 gHz processor is running against Pentium 1.8 and 2.0 gHz cpu\'s. And yet does quite well against them.

Wow! Thanks for the info! :D
Oh yeah- Congrats, Trog! :bounce:
-
Chizzy, the number scheme from AthlonXP\'s is derived from a number of benchmarks like like SPEC mark and such.
The P4 and it\'s massive Mhz kinda fools the consumer, it reaches these insane speeds through it\'s massive 20 stage pipeline. However clock for clock the athlon beats the P4 (it calculates more data on each clock cycle than the P4). And the Athlon also has a much more powerful fpu unit.
-
OH YEAH! I ROCK! WOOO HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
I have a massive pipeline, too!

Yep. Now go find yourself a female geek and tell her that. She\'ll tell you she has a couple of huge software and a tight I/O port. ;)

Hey! One of my games doesn\'t work! It\'s Dungeon Keeper 2, and EA support tells me that it\'s not compatable with XP. :(

Find the games .exe file. right click, then click the Compatabilty tab, there select run compatabilty for win 9x
