Title: Photoshop Secrets!!!!
Post by: juslight on March 18, 2002, 10:25:34 AM
Hey everyone, post some of your favorite Photoshop tricks, (and a sample if you can.)

I know a lot of the people in these forums are Photoshop users and have some tips for others out there who are just starting out.

Now\'s your chance to help them out while picking up some tricks for yourself!!!!
.
.
.
.
.
.
p.s. - I got this Idea from ajoh432\'s post...    Thanks ajoh432, I hope this helps you out.

Here\'s one of my favorite tricks for a brushed metal effect:

1.  Use the "copper" from your gradient list.

2. Go to "Filter."... "Noise"... ADD Noise.  (Make it monochrome & kind of grainy)

3. Go to "Filter"... "Brush strokes"... "Angled strokes"  (adjust the stroke how you like it.  I usually keep it only going 1 direction)

4. duplicate the layer and set the top layer as "Color Dodge" (change the Opacity of the layer to adjust the "Shine")

THAT"S MY FAVORITE!!!! Now let\'s hear some of yours...

Here\'s a sample:  I used this trick to help make the background for this pic...

(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.in-light.org%2Fmas%2Fmeet_all_stars%2Fjustin%2Fimages%2Fobl.jpg&hash=5320ef8574e6276000a47584363514dd8fe4ac5e)

-Make a circle or any shape of you choosing.
-Create a new layer with the circle selected, select the gradient tool and then the circle gradient option. Fill the circle with the colors of your choosing.
- Create a new layer with the selection intact, select the normal gradient again and choose the color white, then go into the gradient options and select Foregrount to transparent. Fill from the bottom, to about 1/3 of the circle. Go into the filters menu>>Blur>>Gaussian Blur blur about 0,5-1,0. Then go into the layers palette and make it transparent, 75 should do it.
-Create another new layer with the same selection, choose the color black and fill the shape from top about the same lenght as the previous, maybe a tad bit shorter. Go into the layers palette and make a little transparent, 55-65 should do it.
- Create a new layer, and repeat the previous but with the color white. After you\'ve made the gradient press Ctrl+D to deselect. Then press Ctrl+T and play around with it, till it makes a small circle-ish shape (see pic), press enter, then select the move tool, and put it in the top if the original circle. Go into the Filters and blur menu and select Gaussian blur again, the same setting as before.
- Go into the layers palette, and make the background invisible, then choose any of the other layers. Go into the properties menu and select Merge Visible.
- Go into the Layers menu>>Layer Effects (Layer Styles for Photoshop 6) Add a drop shadow to the shape, play around with the setting till you satisfied.
- Make the background visibile again, add any effects you want (if you want them) after that go back into the layer properties and choose Flatten image.
- Add any text if you want, I put my real nickname (Elli), to make it look nice you should put a drop shadow on the text in the same color as the shape beneath it, then I used a Photoshop 6 feature, bulge the text, it\'s not very visible though.

Then your set, the end result should look something like this.

DAM! After I read and try all of this.. I should be an expert!:D

KEEP IT COMING!

EDIT! -
Quote
Make a circle or any shape of you choosing.
Jeez! Step one I can\'t even do!... Do you use the "Marquee" tool for that? Cause when I try to do that.. I get this message:
Quote
Warning: No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible.
.. Meanwhile... I\'m gonna try out other stuff...

C\'mon, there have to be a few other photoshoppers around here.

Ajoh, yes the marqee tool is used, and the error might be caused because you are using multible layers and had the wrong layer selected.

Here\'s a little something I whipped up using both techniques.

(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagehost.auctionwatch.com%2Fbin%2Fimageserver.x%2F00000000%2Fblorfolp%2Fpictarr.jpg&hash=ee623d7ff3e818ec6ff452fb9a56fb31577c6462)

I\'ve been working with Photoshop for a long time, but I just fell into it, began playing around with it back on version 2.0. But belive me it becomes addictive, I\'m doing some professional jobs now adays.

Here\'s a way to put blood on things:

1.  create a new layer

2.  pick a deep "blood red" color

3.  use a brush tool to paint the red where you want it in the new layer. (Make sure the layer is on top.)

4.  Set the layer as "Color Burn"

(You can use the smear tool to make the blood "run"

Anyone have any other tips or tricks to share???

Here\'s how I make rust:

1.  Pick a dirty orange-brown foreground color.  Then pick a dark-brown background color.

2.  Create a new layer and use "filter"...  "render"... "clouds"

3.  Now use "difference clouds" twice.

4.  Use "filter"...  "sharpen"...  "unsharp mask"

5.  Add noise, use the sandstone texturizer and then use "artistic"...  "rough pastels"  (do whatever you want to make it look grainy)

6.  after it looks like rust go to "layer"...  "Add layer mask"  (reveal all)

7.  Click on the "Mask" section next to your rust layer and make sure you have black as your foreground & white as your background, then hit "difference clouds" a couple of times.

8.  Go to "Image"... "adjust"...  "Brightness & Contrast"   make the Contrast high and you should have some nice random rust to use over whatever.

Here is a sample using all the stuff posted so far:

(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.in-light.org%2Fmas%2Fmeet_all_stars%2Fjustin%2Fimages%2Fpshop.jpg&hash=c2f4eff47e3d2e8a4e94a34fd1f7d0b9a27765bc)

That\'s what I get for rushing!!!

Anyone else have any tricks or effects???

Here\'s how to fill an area with a pattern:

1.  select a small area of your artwork with the rectangle marquee.

2.  "Edit"...  "define pattern"...

3.  "Select"... "all"

4.  "Edit"...  "Fill"...  Use "pattern"

(this is a good way to create a grid.)

The above method was used to create the background for the first pic I posted.

If I have time I\'ll post a way to create aqua like buttons and witgets (think MacOSX), it\'s a tad more complicated than the basic stuff I made before.

(what can I say, I like aqua type graphics)

I\'m learning Photshop 6 right now, on my own, of course. No classes.

I tried the sphere trick. I\'m impressed with my self! THANKS GUYS! I was able to apply the sphere to my pictures of my friends and putting their pics in funny situations....like a Chinese restaurant next to an Animal Hospital....with the chinese chef IN the animal hospital with a plate of "food"!!!

:D

Keep \'em coming.

OK this is long.

First create an rgp document, select the rounded rectangle in the shapes selection. Go into the tools options and makethe radius about 50px. Make sure you select create as filled region.

After you made the shape, select it and make a new layer out of it, this will be the base for the pic, select the gradiend tool and select dark blue and a lighter blue. Fill the shape darker color on top. Go into layer styles (layer effects for photoshop 5) then select drop shadow, angle 90°, opacity 30-40, distance 47, blur 20 and intensity 10. Then go back into layers styles/effects and select bevel and emboss. Highlight opacity 100%, shadow opacity 50% and make the shadows color burn. And the bevelling will be depth 5% and blur 12%. After thats all done make this layers opacity 75%.

your stuff should look something like this.
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagehost.auctionwatch.com%2Fbin%2Fimageserver.x%2F00000000%2Fblorfolp%2Fphotoshop1.jpg&hash=84ae34e547194dabf82c4ea4e39d0d59fa54d791)

Duplicate this layer, blendin options multiply and opacity 30%. Give this layer a drop shadow, in the drop shadow options panel select the color a light blue instead of black, opacity 100%, distance 33 and blur 20.

With the selection intact create a new layer and fill it with white, press ctrl+d to deselect and then press ctrl+t to transform, make this layer smaller and put it in the bottom center of the original shape, this will show the glass like transparency of the button. Then go into Filters and Blur then select gaussian blur,  radius 10 pixels. Then go into the layers palette and blending options, select ovarlay and then make this layer\'s transparency 40%. Now duplicate this layer and make it color dodge and transparency 10.
Now duplicate layer2 copy and resize it to be even smaller than the previous layer (this is done to add realism to the shading), put it into the middle of the layer and make the opacity 20%.

Now, create a new layer (layer 3), then hold ctrl and click on layer one (this will make the shape a selection again), select the gradient tool, under the gradient\'s tool\'s options select foreground to transparent. Fill the selection top to bottom. This will become the highlight like in my previous pic.

Create a new layer (layer 4) and repeat the previous to make the selection again. Go into edit and stroke, select width 2px and center for location. Press ok. For layer mode select color dodge and lower the opacity to 35%. Go into the Filter>>Blur>>Gaussian blur and enter 2px then click ok

Now you should have a basic aqua button, you don\'t have to use my exact numbers, play around with the numbers and colors to suit your needs.

Now to add text, press d to make the default color selection. Now press t to select the text tool. Enter some text. Now under the layer styles/effects select drop shadow. The color should be a medium blue and opacity 55%. Distance 8, blur 8 and intensity 0.

Now, most likely the finished result might look wierd to you, but that\'s because your still seeing the picture in different layers. A good thing to help this is make the pic smaller (ctrl+-)

The finished image should look something like this.
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagehost.auctionwatch.com%2Fbin%2Fimageserver.x%2F00000000%2Fblorfolp%2Fphotoshop2.jpg&hash=95055fa255480472ed3ab6b86af1e86693dfe159)

Now this was a rush job so it\'s not an exact replica, but you basically get the idea. And this is really difficult to explain without either a complete pictorial or you actually being in the room.

What version of Photoshop do you have?
In ps 6 it\'s next to the pen tool, it should be marked as a rectangle tool, just hold the button until you can make your selection. Then once you have it you just select the radius, I used 50px but I think 60 might be closer to the real shape.

Post by: nO-One on March 26, 2002, 12:22:26 PM
Juslight, here a little aqua text tutorial, now this is all stuff I learned a while back, I worked around the original numbers to what I feel looks better, but I tried to use the ones I was taught.

1. First step is pretty much like every first step when it comes to photoshop, open an rgb document. Set your foreground to blue or what ever color you choose. Select the type tool and write some text, I use Apple Garamond the official iText (available here http://flaimo.com/famousfonts/fontdetail.asp?ID=6 ). After you\'ve written whatever you wanted hold Ctrl and click the text layer, this will make the text a selection.

2. Create a new layer, then go to the Selection>>Modify>>Contract and enter 2-3px (this will shrink your selection). Then switch you foreground color to a lighter shade of blue (or whatever color you chose), fill your selection with the new color. Press Ctrl+d to deselect.

3. Drag the layer2 icon into the new layer icon, then go into Filter>>Blur>>Gaussian blur, your just going ti apply a slight blur, I entered 5px while the picture was at 640x480, the bigger the pic is the more blur you\'ll add, and the smaller the less blur.

4. Go into layer styles/layer effects and click on bevel and emboss, select depth 300, then play around with the size, put a number between 10 and 13, just put what you feel applies. Change the highlight mode to normal and exposure somewhere between 85 to 100%, I used 87%. But when I learned this It was supposed to be 100%. Then change the shadow mode to color dodge and exposure to around 40%, I used 34%. Then click the black color selection thingie next to the shadow selection, select white instead of black.

5. Make the background invisible, then click on any of the other layers, click the little arrow in the top right corner of the layers palette, select merge visible in the drop down menu. Then go into the layer styles/effects menu and select drop shadow. Take the opacity down to around 30-40, then just play around with it like you feel like.

6. To finalize this, go into image>>adjust>>color balance drag the cyan down to -75 and the bottom slider towards blue till +75. (this is all assuming your using the blue colors)

here\'s how the finished product should look like.
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagehost.auctionwatch.com%2Fbin%2Fimageserver.x%2F00000000%2Fblorfolp%2Finoone.jpg&hash=e6e65f0b7017f574efacd8e601ef2e48c6007a5d)

You can continue to play around with the final layers opacity etc..

Videoholic, nope I haven\'t gotten my greedy little hands on Photoshop.7 yet, but soon. :)

Looking good Juslight, that\'s the great thing about Photoshop, there are many different ways to achieve similar effects and one can always continue tweaking the ones you know.

GmanJoe, the aqua button is pretty complicated, especially for a novice, the text and the sphere trick are easier, ones you\'ve got them nailed the aqua one will be easier.

Here\'s a fun trick I learned from "Screaming Art"  to make creatures:

1.  with a new file use your airbrush to draw a HALF face on the side of the canvas.

Like this(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.in-light.org%2Fmas%2Fmeet_all_stars%2Fjustin%2Fimages%2Fone.jpg&hash=e3b553397e91d42d1d020df57ee107ca27330791)

2.  use the smear tool to smear the lines into the white spaces.

Like this(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.in-light.org%2Fmas%2Fmeet_all_stars%2Fjustin%2Fimages%2Ftwo.jpg&hash=8ffdc37a322335a1491bcf5d50e75dc9c96f1186)

3.  after you are done you can darken the image to how you like it.
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.in-light.org%2Fmas%2Fmeet_all_stars%2Fjustin%2Fimages%2Fthree.jpg&hash=ce4c1e6511271513053f184aa891cace350785dd)

4.  Select All...  Copy  &  Paste.  Now double the canvas size so you have enough room for your creature.

5.  Flip the new layer Horizontal and drag the Half face so it matches up.
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.in-light.org%2Fmas%2Fmeet_all_stars%2Fjustin%2Fimages%2Ffour.jpg&hash=4c52968f09852ac78fd827d30b691cfa350fa991)

6.  Create a New layer and set it to "Color".  Now you can color in your monster and add other effects to it.

I used no-One\'s tricks to make the eyes and then made the whole image smaller for beter looking details.  HERE IT IS...
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.in-light.org%2Fmas%2Fmeet_all_stars%2Fjustin%2Fimages%2Ffive.jpg&hash=1a76f8444e4b15f01b0468e3fe1ba3ed3fa1f3ce)

Back in 4.0 days I would dupe a layer that I wanted to drop shadow, then paintit all black, blur it, and move it to the side a little.  There you go, drop shadow.

I\'m an avid photoshopper, too, and would love to contribute to this thread... I made a really groovy .atn back in the army, that creates semi-transparent liquidy text that distorts anything that falls behind it. Guess who forgot to bring the bastard home. And I can\'t replicate it anymore... :(

Maybe I\'ll post something else when I have time... I got some neat little tricks stored between my ears... meanwhile, here\'s a little something I just whipped up... needs working on, but I don\'t have the strength required right now... :)
