Right well the XBox certainly is a nice machine. Its funny how the PS2 has taken a year or so for the developers to warm to the console and then the XBox comes out and has games which looks as good if not argubly better than some of the top PS2 titles. These are XBox launch titles.
I think even if you want to argue the machines are equal, the XBox will acceralate away from the PS2 with it being twice the power (paper spec I know so it wont actually be twice as powerful) and being easier to develop for.
However with the PS2 already having a hugh userbase and games library (its saving grace) I think only one of the two new consoles will do battle with the already established PS2. This I am sure will be XBox over the Gamecube. Nothing about the Gamecube strikes me as good. The pricing seems to be aimed at a budget market, a bad move which may put people off considering consoles to a casual onlooker are technical pieces of equitment. Also the Gamecubes this year release schedule leaves a little to be disired. Its almost as though Nintendo have stepped aside to allow the PS2 and XBox to do battle. Its like Nintendo have aimed the Gamecube at a different audience. However I don\'t think this market is enough for it to survive.
So with the stage set for the PS2 and XBox to do battle I think both consoles will be successful. I don\'t think the XBox will be able to kill both the Gamecube and PS2. Even if the Xbox is technically the far supiour console I think the PS2 will survive soley on Sony\'s respect from the PS1 causing game developers to flock to it.
The XBox prehaps being the better console may in the long run damage Sony\'s rep for when the PS3? and XBox2? comes out. However who cares by that time you won\'t have wasted your money and you can then decide which console to get next.
So thats my theory. How do you lot think it will go?

Sony has already won this war, if there was one..
Take a look at sales in Europe and Japan and tell me the xbox is going to catch up. If the ps2 is outselling the xbox 10 to 1 in europe and japan, how on earth will it have any chance of winning? Every day it gets further behind too

Forget a war; there wasn\'t even a battle in the first place.
Obviously, sales-wise, the PS2 has \'won\', but frankly, having access to all 3 major consoles is the best way for your gaming pleasure, irrespective of its podium placing.
Sublime is having a go on Halo, switching to ICO, and then onto Super Monkey Ball.

The PS2 is in first place...with 30 million users and growing, it\'s definitely at the top right now.
The Xbox is nice, really nice. I see alot of potential in it, but for some reason developers just aren\'t taking advantage...it is only 5 months old though. If MS can get some sense knocked into them to lower the price in Europe and get some games besides FPS, then it could take off in all territories.
GC is beginning to peak my interest again. Square signing on, Sega releasing that RPG, it looks like there is no where to go but up. I think they have a diverse lineup to suit anyones\' taste.
I\'d say we still have 4-5 years left before the next generation rolls out. Anything can happen in that amount of time...

MS have to be more aggresive with their pricing in Europe, as excluding the UK, the other countries fared rather poorly.
And let\'s not even begin talking about its \'sucess\' in Japan.

PS2 was never really a part of a console war this generation. It had secured a win months before the other 2 systems came out. The real war is for 2nd. Will gamecube win or X-Box? Gamecube as has better sales then X-Box in some contries such as Japan. X-box has had better sales in countries such as America.

A lot of you have already decided that Sony has won the war. I agree that it has its feet firmly on the ground and a nice size of sales sitting behind it but it isn\'t too late for this actual console war.
Prehaps Microsoft or Nintendo won\'t sale that many consoles to make up the difference which has already been placed between Sony and the companies. However it isn\'t how many sales the console "has" has but how many sales the console can maintain having. Prehaps for the here and now the userbase may attract developers but if say Microsoft\'s or Nintendo\'s console start to sell by the bucket load developers may switch. It hasn\'t taken Sony all that long to get where it is today with the PS2. Considering this was from what a lot of people thought a disapointing lineup and a disapointing first year is pretty remarkable.

hardly, the ps2 lineup is much much better, the xbox has yet to release an exclusive RPG (or an RPG for that matter)! and I don\'t see one coming (unless you call Project Ego an RPG)

the public voted with their money and as a result the PS2 is brake\'n record after Record... while the X box stuggles to get mor than 8 000 sales in Japan in a Week
look i am not saying the X box is DEAD... but by the looks of things it WON\'t be in any position to treaten the PS2.

With the BBA and the possibe price drop of the PS2 this fall that should be the nail in the perverbial coffin for the X-box and Nintendo, I know alot of people who would buy a PS2 if the price dropped 50-100 Bucks.

What would happen if Nintendo or Microsoft pulled out of the console race? I hope the games Sony & co. made wouldn\'t lose their quality, seeing as there\'s no more competitors. Oh, and it would seem that Sony has things undercontrol for now. Micro-who?:D

These are battles, hence, the war will always continue til there isn\'t a developer making consoles anymore.

I don\'t care about the whole war, it\'s not worth arguing about. Heck this war is what makes Sony, M$, and the big N improve their consoles. If there was no competition everything would be mega mega mega mega ok. (mediocre)

Chrono if I may disregard your fanblyism for a second...MicroSoft stated that they don\'t want to surpass PS2, they have to much of a head start. Xbox was released in North America in the holiday season (Christmas), Xbox was released way after the Hoilday season(Christmas=presents=systems=Xbox PS2 GC=consumer already has PS2 [presumbaly]=GC Xbox/if don\'t own a PS2 consumer wants something new=GC Xbox.... Japan & Europe=Febuary & March=after Holiday season=less money=less systems=less sold [GC won\'t seel like hot cakes either]) solved.

Sales wise, PS2 is obviously cleaning up right now, and it should be. At this point, it\'s clear that it is the best system out there.
I do, however, think that both Gamecube and X-box have a ton of potential. X-Box has so much power, and if microsoft wants to, they can put a ton of money behind it. Gamecube, however, is the one that interests me. They have what seems to me to be a great lineup of future games. That\'s in part because Nintendo has so many established game series to work from. They have Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Star Fox, etc. All of those games interest me a lot. Then, they have games like PSO from sega coming, which interest me as well. The main thing though that makes me think that Nintendo could make this more of an even war sometime down the line is that they finally brought Squaresoft back on board.
This may just be because I have always been a big Nintendo fan, but that\'s just what I think.

to correct you on the Square/Nintendo aggrement... Square never joined Nin a lower level of Square did. they agreed to make a game based on the unpopular Japan cartoon, FF Unlimited. But I agree with you on the Nin franshises(although Zelda looks terrible in cel shade) Star Fox & Metroid r the only ones that seem "cool" so to speak.

No matter how Zelda looks, I\'ll get it. People put too much emphasis on how something looks. Most of my favorite games to play are for NES, SNES, or Genesis. It isn\'t graphics that matter, but how a game plays. Zelda games have never let me down in that area before.

Im with this guy. Who cares what a game looks like aslong as its a great game. FF7 was my favorite game of all time followed up by MGS. They both didnt have *awsome* graphics bt great gameplay+stories.
But im not sure I wanna play a Zelda game where the main character looks exactly like the elf who wants to be a dentist in that christmas movie.

if the X Boux continues to do this BADLY ... very few people will be buying the second one.
