Title: Xbox sold less than 2000 in the uk last week?
Post by: MAKAVELIUK on April 02, 2002, 03:07:51 PM
15:43 It might have gone down like a very cool pint on a hot summer\'s day in the US, but for Xbox, Europe and Japan are a different story. According to reports from the land of the yen, the initial week of launch sales of 123,000 have dropped to around 12,000 units, and reports of retailers in Europe possibly being forced to cut prices in order to get boxes out the door are already surfacing. Although unconfirmed, UK sales could have dropped as low as 2000 units in the last week.
It seems that Microsoft has stepped into the ring with the mighty Sony and Nintendo, armed with a massive marketing campaign but only two real killer apps (Halo and Dead Or Alive 3), and come out with two black eyes and its shorts around its ankles.

Microsoft, however, is showing no signs of weakness, especially in regard to the European market. "We are very pleased with the success of Xbox in Europe to date," stated Sandy Duncan, Xbox Europe boss.

Senior industry sources are painting a different picture though, and are likening Xbox to Sega\'s ill-fated Dreamcast. After an initial success, sales of the machine dropped rapidly - anyone who wanted one bought one quickly, and further take-up was slow. According to industry sources, the main thorn in Xbox\'s side is its lack of killer games titles.

Market analyst SoundView Technology is currently predicting that that Microsoft won\'t be hitting its target of 1.5 million Xbox unit sales in Europe in the first three months of the console\'s existence. The figure, according to the group, is more likely to be around the 1 million mark.

The analyst also predicts that Microsoft will fail to reach its target of between 4.5 million and 6 million console sales worldwide within Xbox\'s first eight months. 4.3 million will be the likely figure, says SoundView.

I fail to see how she is very pleased with the sales in Europe when they are already considering a price cut. The sales are almost at 2000! Thats horrible. I havent kept up with how much the PS2 has costed but has it had a price drop yet? How stubborn can MS be? Cant they ever admit a product that bombed? Well in countries other then USA.

nope they or any other company .....can\'t admit that their product is doing badly !

a company can release sales figures and coment on them...

but if a company was turn round as openly say they have failed then its Industrial Suicide, as people will lose faith in their product as well as the managerial credibility.

Yeah 00seven pretty much summed up what I was going to say. However I wanted to also add that sales figures and statistics can be very easily manipulated.

If the box doesn\'t do well world-wide, will the local US market survive?

Sega never really had popularity in the US. Well not anymore than say Europe or Japan. The Dreamcast was failing in all countries.

There have been sysytems that were only popular in Japan that lasted a good bit, because the systems were made in Japan.

Would a US system last in the US alone?  Maybe.  But I doubt it.

A console needs Japanese software support.

Heh...from where I came from, I can always see people carrying off PS2 where I visit shopping malls during weekend and hardly see anyone buying X-Boxes and some store don\'t even bother to stock up X-Box..

Well it\'s true, the last thing Microsoft is going to do is show signs of weakness, so they get their PR guys to make up some mumbo-jumbo about "oh yeah, we are very pleased upon inical release quotas, we sure the hells don\'t mind selling a measly 2,000 units in a week when our expectations were clearly above 100,000"

It\'s a thing that doesn\'t require rocket scientists to figure out

I don\'t really see what they can do. The only things that will boost there sales figures are a MASSIVE price drop, a lot more AAA games, none of which spring to mind (although i am poorly educated when it comes to XBOX release schedule). Maybe they could make it a bit smaller too ;)

I am quite worried about Microsoft throwing around monney. We\'ve seen it with Halo and we will see it again. If MS can\'t win like that, they might buy their victory.

I dunno how they can win a battle (MS).

All their rats jump ship and get seats with big time competitors!

hmmm don\'t think they got enough to buy Sony. Don\'t know what they\'re worth but I will be surprised if MS could afford such a purchase.
Besides nor Sony or the Japanese in general would allow an American company, especially MS, to buy Sony I think hehehe.

Rick,

Microsoft is a huge company, but there is no way they could buy Sony, unless they want to end up in a life time of debt.

Sony is a huge company, they own alot of media companies as well, Colombia Pictures, Sony Computer Entertainment, Tri Star, Sony Pictures, Sony Music, Metreon,  and many more companies, I think MSFT wouldn\'t even think about trying to attempt to buy Sony.  Also Sony owns there on broadband company in Japan, Sony is a huge company, most of the things they own are in Japan!

I remember a poster at the IGN boards last year posting all the companies Sony owned, it was like 15 or 20 of them I think, I will try to get the list later.

Sony, much like Microsoft, is virtually impossible to purchase.

Microsoft could purchase Nintendo, but it would totally kick their bank account\'s ass.

Yeah, ok, but I\'m sure they could afford the PlayStation enterprise. I very much doubt sony would give it up tho. Ignore me from now on :D

Sony is a conglomerate. As a whole, Sony could buy MS and still have money left over. But that will never happen since a lot of the companies under Sony are autonomous (to a point).

EDIT : This didn\'t come out right. What I meant to say is that although Sony could buy MS, they\'d have to sell off all their other billion dollar companies. And....that will never happen. Polyphony Digital being sold off? GADZOOKS! NEVER!

I\'m sure Microsoft would love to buy Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc.  but I doubt Sony would let a division like that go for purchase.
