Title: Some questions answered (Gamer\'s Summit)
Post by: Blade on April 04, 2002, 12:35:52 PM
This guy went to Nintendo\'s press-only Gamer\'s Summit in Seattle.

Click here (http://www.planetgamecube.com/mailbag.cfm?action=profile&id=70) for his Q&A mailbag.

Here\'s some interesting info from him, concerning Super Mario Sunshine:

Q: Does Super Mario Sunshine still look like crap?

Rick says: NO. The game looks great in motion. The game will FEEL like the N64 title, because it’s SUPPOSED to. Also, the textures in the background objects are PLACEHOLDERS. They are Mario 64 textures, and are just there until the final textures are in. The game is very smooth, running at 60FPS, with loads of animation frames.

Do yourself a favor. Ignore the trolls. Mario will be great. It’s the sequel to “The Best Videogame of All Time.” Nintendo is NOT going to screw this up.

Q: What was the most impressive feature of Super Mario Sunshine?

Rick says: Honestly? YOSHI. Mario walked right up to him, and it looked like the two were about to hold a conversation. It wasn’t apparent whether you could ride him (I didn’t see a saddle), but you never know …

Sounds good! I had my doubts considering Miyamoto\'s philosophy on gaming (gameplay is the top priority, graphics are secondary) but it sounds like EAD is delivering both.. in spades!

Thing is, even if it WAS using N64 textures, then wouldn\'t the GC automatically render them higher in quality?

But then, it really does look crapl. I hope for Nintendo\'s sake, that they are indeed placeholder textures, cause they sure do suck.

A 1996 texture is a 1996 texture.. they don\'t change much. Filtering might be slightly better.

Then again, this guy saw a video of Mario.. not a real-time demonstration. Some of the effects of filtering and the like be unnoticable in that format. Anyways, looking at a few of the SMS screenshots.. I actually recognize some of the textures from SM64.

Here\'s hoping that Rick\'s take on this is correct, and those are placeholders..

Well, having N64 textures as place holders in NGC title is simply asking for media trouble. You know that even as of today if a picture isn\'t showing next generation features such as FSAA or Trilinear filtering, everyone else will be found mocking it the very next day.

Simply put, telling the critics that a game that looks like a 1996 game but plays like a 2002 game is indeed very hard to swallow. And being just that this specific title is Mario SunShine or whatever it is makes the manners worse, because we are so used to seeing this legend being put through things we\'ve already seen in the past.

True.

While you see games like Project Ego and Resident Evil in all of their next-generation glory in screenshots, the typical game looks like crap. In GameCube\'s case, it\'s Metroid Prime, or Eternal Darkness.

"The shots don\'t do the game justice" is a common line for gaming journalists today.

Nah, it\'s like if you took Clyde from mm\'s house and put him on the side of the Empire State Building, he\'d still be just a monkey.  (Yea, that\'s right, chimp, I\'m calling you out! ;))

I still have my concerns about this title.  Cleaning up graffiti?  Sounds kind of like sucking up ghosts to me.  It was fun for a few hours but then what?  Here\'s to putting some depth in alongside the originality.

Oh, and by the way, I heard that the cel-da textures are just place-holders for the gruesome, bouncy-breasted zombie textures to be added later.  So it looks like that will be a good game again.

Me = just pre-ordered Eternal Darkness, Super Mario Sunshine, Zelda, Metroid Prime, and Star Fox Adventures.

All at once, at my local EB. It\'s going to be a Nintendo Christmas this year, baby!

Ryu, I agree with your feeling that more delays must be imminent, but Nintendo seems pretty locked in about Mario, Zelda, and Eternal Darkness (drool) for that matter.  I\'d be more concerned with the dates of Metroid and Star Fox Adventures... ya know, if I was going to be concerned about dates.

It\'s funny how Nintendo, the company that is very concevertive about its products and only presents high quality stuff to the media, gives out screens of its sequel to "The Best Videogame of All Time” with N64 textures...
