Volition and THQ are into the full swing of development for their RPG sequel, Summoner 2, and as with the original, we can expect constant updates through the official site. The latest update contains plenty of media and information. For starters, the site has interviewed the Lead Designer of the game, Sandeep Shekar, where he discusses what kinds of changes we can expect in Summoner 2 and how it will connect to the original.
We now have information on The Nhuvasarim, one of the many types of enemies gamers can expect to run into during their adventure, as well as an MP3 of the theme for Munari City:
Munari City music (ZIP/MP3) (http://www.summoner2.com/downloads/munari%20city_mp3.zip)
The Nhuvasarim were an ancient sect of necromancers. Their rituals involved torture and blood sacrifice, believing that the suffering of their victims would make them powerful.
The Nhuvasarim first appeared in Halassar after the Tree of Eleh shattered. At the core of their heresy was the worship of Laharah as a diabolical goddess of death. In their version of the myth, Laharah destroyed the Tree of Eleh to punish the people she had created.
As the Nhuvasarim grew powerful, the kings of Halassar fell under their corrupt influence. Their reign ended when Githiran, first emperor of Galdyr, conquered Halassar. Githiran sealed the evil sorcerers within the pages of a book, and the people of Halassar embraced Laharah as the goddess of life once again.
But a few survivors fled east to Medeva and Orenia. There people worshiped Urath, god of the Sudani. In these new lands, Laharah was unknown, and the Nhuvasarim converted many to their heresy and its goddess of death. As a new holy war erupted, the myth of the Araenugeth (the “War of the Gods”) was born.
After centuries of bloodshed, the last of the Nhuvasarim perished in the fires of the Inquisition. Their teachings, however, survived to inspire future tyrants of Medeva and Orenia, including the villains of Summoner 1.

hmmm this one looks as bad (graphically) as the first one. Not impressive at all. Might play good, like the first one.
-
looks good, not great!!! last pic is quite good though.
hope they fix the draw distance and bad camera angles in this one though, as it made the 1st bad, though the games was good
-
never played the first... but I heard it sucked?
I\'ll give this a try if it gets reasonable reviews.
-
the 1st one rocked
but we all know its about graphics and not gameplay
Plus the story in the SUmmoner was far ebtter then any story in any video game I\'ve ever played
graphics are still weak, but I bet it looks better in motion then it does in a capature
all the draw in problems are suposedly fixed, and the battle system has been revamped as well which disspoints me cause I loved the 1st one
but then I was good at it
-
The combat system in Summoner ruined the game for me. I don\'t think I\'ve ever played an RPG with such dull, repetitive real-time battles. It\'s nice to hear the Volition wised up and changed it, and hopefully it\'ll be for the better.

did you finish the game ??? Cause the game picked up the pace in the 2nd half
I thought it was killer. I had 5 characters going and had to continue to switch between each 5 to reposition them and start an attack while switching agaoin to my helaer to keep the team alive
I loved the that ability.
compared to Turned Based RPG\'s the Summoer destroyed them.
Nothing is more exciting as choosing a menu and scrolling to the desired action. ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Please tell me of some other multiple character one player real time RPG\'s out there.
the chain attack system is one of my faovrites. Vagrant Story rocked and the Summoner added to it by allowing you to control multiple charachters. If you liked Vagrant Story there is no way youy culdn\'t enjoy the Summoner
-
Yeah, I finished the game. But the combat system never got any better.
I find even turn-based battles to be more exciting than those I encountered in Summoner. You run up to an enemy, attack them with your sword, and then begin a tedious process of pressing directonal buttons. Rinse. Repeat. Die of boredom.
Multiple-character, real-time (I use that term loosely) battles should be more along the lines of Star Ocean 2 or Tales of Destiny only with a stronger emphasis on melee combat, or like Dark Cloud or Zelda with more than one character.
And no, I didn\'t like Vagrant Story.
:)
-
different strokes for different folks
I can do with out Turn based RPG\'s in the Japanese anime styled console RPG sense
and Vagrant Story is my favorite game eva, I\'ll take the chain attack system
Summoner was great fun and I wish to god there were a heluva alot more RPG\'s being made more like it, minus the technical short comings of course. But since the Japanese are the only BIG Dev companies making large budgeted RPG\'s I\'ll just have to face facts and realize there won\'t be many good RPG\'s for me to play on the PS2
Games like Drakan and Summoner are 2 of my favorites, not very popular with the majority though.

Looks pretty good... - for a 3 year old PC game running on a Pentium II.
Those screenshots look like complete a$$. Volition should be ashamed of themselves for putting out shots like that.
-
well i didnt really like the fighting in summoner, i only got aout of first big town, had a ring and another character...i liked ita bit, but didnt really like it, i found the tming hard as the screen was sooo zoomed out......i liked vagrant story, bu didnt like the fighting on this..hope its all improved
-
I\'m sorry but...
the first Summoner is probably the worst game i\'ve ever played on PS2....
thus, there is no way this one can interest me.

umm the camera was completely controllable and had a zoom in and out feature
also if you didn\'t play the game at least to the 1/2 point you missed out on where the action really picked up and the storyline took off
The Summoner was the best stroy in a videogame I\'ve ever enjoyed with Vagrant Story being a close 2nd
the 1st game is still one of my favorite RPG\'s and the 2nd one is the few present reasons why I\'ll be keeping my PS2

Bah.. You hate Jak and Dax... But love this game... I dunno about you.:D jk...

Honestly I actuallly dont understand the so called hardcore gamer, but there is a quite a few people who loved the Summoner. For some reason they jsut don\'t hang out here, same with Drakan, another awesome realtime action RPG but yet the so called hardcore who hand out here didn\'t fgive it a try probably cause it wasn\'t Japanese enough.... I find it kinda sad
but at least no one can say I only like whats popular. I find Japanese RPG\'s are to melodramatic for my tastes. The turn based random battle systems are a big turn off to me as well
Summoner was fantastic in story and gameplay. It started slow but it got very interesting about 1/3 of the way in. I\'ve never played a multiple character realtime RPG before the Summoner and haven\'t played on esince so maybe there are some out there. Just not on the PS2
I thought the chain attack system and the way you could level up all 4 of your characters with different traits was great
the technical aspect like the fix camera in the city of Lanelle which did suck as did draw in also in the city of Lanelle but its not about graphics right ???
-
yeah i know the camera was controllable, but i just couldnt get the hang of it!!!
i think if i had more money at the time i wouldnt of took it back, but i think it was near a release of a big game when i got it, so i took it back for that!!
-
ive got the first one but i have got bored of it.....sorry if im not jumping for joy!!!
-
the graphics are worse than the original by far (except for the draw distance :)) i hope they are improved
and Ddaryl, you\'ve convinced me to go out and give Summoner another try.. once i finish Baldur\'s Gate, ill need something huge to tide me over til FFX.. i rented out Summoner a long time ago, and the story was cool (i only got up to the first city)
a thing i loved about it was the fact that the cities were lifesize.. it was HUGE.. but it was TOO big and i lost what i was doing and never rented it out again.. ill give it another go, because i have been looking for a strong storyline (and this is well known to have one of the best)..
and the battle system didnt seem too bad.. for a complete vagrant story rip off :)
i am looking forward to this game, and as long as the draw distance is fixed, im happy with it :)
-
yeah hope they include a map on this one, and something so it can remind you what sub quest you are on ( cant rember if they were on he old one, been ages since i played it)

Well if I remember correctly the 1st one was in low res up until the last few months of dev. Which I hope is the case here
and yes the battle system is pretty much Vagrant Stories, but we can find a 1000 games that have like battle systems to other games. Summoner just stands out cause Vagrant Story is the only other game I can think of that uses it.
-
don\'t worry ddaryl! i\'m here to help defend Summoner too!
I recently restarted playing it and I\'m not let down once again just like I wasn\'t the first time I played it.
Considering it was Volitions first RPG on a brand new console they did a good job IMHO
Yes, Summoner had a mile long list of problems and thins that could of improved.
but hey, thats what sequels are for.
No question Summoner had a grade A story. Now if they can just improve on some gameplay elements and graphical tweaks i\'m sure they could pull off an amazing videogame experience.
OH! and lets hope we get ANOTHER HILALRIOUS summoner geeks video :D:D:D
I totally loved that thing, one of the funniest laughs I had in a game to date :)
-
I think summoner had one of THE best stories in a game.
The battles were also very good in my opinion. What It lacked was enough polish. They rushed it for launch was their problem. The quests you got were slightly fun, but had no bearing what so ever on the game. It also lacked realism when it came to the world. There was only ONE city in a kingdom? Come on. I felt the story was epic but the GAME was not epic enough. There should have been more to do than follow how linear the game was. Even the quests only involved you running back and forth the whole time. Other than the Flaws I REALLY liked this game. I thought the summons were implemented perfectly, and the battle system was very well thought out(Other than the metoer spell. Once I got that, battles lost most of their difficulty till way later.)
