Even before its launch, the NGC\'s price has been dropped to 199($177 USD). Without a doubt this is because of the recent Xbox price drop. http://babel.altavista.com/translate.dyn?doit=done&BabelFishFrontPage=yes&enc=utf8&bblType=url&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nintendo.co.jp%2Fn10%2Fnews%2F020422.html&lp=ja_en
Also, the new price Australia will be 329 ($178 USD) when it is released in May. http://www.saarp.com/fluxcapacitor.saarp?page=news_details&nid=459
For the record, the US is paying the most for the PS2, the Xbox, and the NGC compared to everywhere else in the world. Go USA! We are quickly becoming the new "Europe" where companies can charge us extremely high prices and we\'ll still bite. ;)
One can only wonder what effect the PS2 USA price drop at E3 will have on the rest of the consoles. For those of you considering getting a PS2, Xbox, or NGC in the US, it would be foolish to not wait until E3.

Is a PS2 price drop at E3 confirmed?
-
It is all but confirmed. With the current market situations - two new consoles out, Sony\'s being the oldest and still costing $300, it would only make sense for Sony to lower it by around $50 dollars and sell even more consoles .
Personally, I\'m torn on the price drop Nintendo did. They don\'t really need to do it, as they have more than enough solid games to still sell more than MS (not saying much, is it ? ;) ). At the same time, I can see why they done it. It can\'t hurt sells any, that\'s for sure. However, on the flip side, with the price drop they\'ll lose even more money with each unit sold. The NGC was already low enough, in my humble opinion.
-
IMO, unless Xbox sales pick up, I don\'t see Sony dropping the price any further. How much does PS2 cost in the US anyway?
EDID: didn\'t read your post very well on my first way through. 300.. mmh, okay then a price drop quite logical to asume. I was mainly refering to the European market situation where the PS2 has already been dropped, so I can\'t see it being dropped again overhere. ;)

w00000000000t!
I\'m glad to see such low prices here. Gotta love a little competition. :D

in the states
PS2\'s and xbox\'s are 299$
NGC is 199$
but every time i go into EBworld or funcoland then have lots of xbox\'s for sale pre-played for 229$ i wonder why they have so many xbox\'s pre-played and no PS2\'s or NGC\'s
:)
-
Thats 199euros right?? If so, that means it should only be about £120, w00t! Sod the GBA, methinks I may get a GC :D
-
no, 199$ is roughly 230 euros
-
£130 For a GameCube :D

Sony is taking the "wait and see" approach to this. They have said they will wait about a month then decide whether or not they will drop the price in Europe again. If they do drop it then, we might see a simultanious PS2 price drop in both Europe and the US in June.
22,04,2002 - 11:00 o\'clock - (mcv) Sony computer Entertainment does not want to react to Nintendos price offensive first, but to wait for the sales revenues to at the end of of May. " Nintendo was always a guarantor to use each situation over with a price corresponding to real market conditions to offer ", says SCED managing director Manfred Gerdes (photo) opposite MCV. " that is surely also a positive signal at the final customers. We will wait for first the month May and will observe, which suction effect unfolds by this price. We, we will only then decide on marketing or price-laterally intervene. "

And more on the NGC price drop from C&VG:
The obvious question: why? (the price drop)
Gosen: It\'s all about giving the best proposition to the consumer at day one. We wanted them to be able to buy on day one, and to be confident that they\'re getting the best deal, so they have no concerns about what\'ll happen in the future.
Have you confirmed the price cut now to avoid the situation Microsoft faced with Xbox, where it was forced to drop the price merely weeks after launch?
Gosen: I think we\'re in very different situations. We see the price as only one component part of a very strong offering, and we wanted to make it very clear to consumers that they can buy at the lowest possible price now. We expect huge success for our console. I think there\'s a big difference there.
Are you still sticking to the line that you\'re not in competition with Microsoft and Sony? In light of what\'s happened today and the recent price cut of Xbox, that stance is becoming more than a little cloudy.
Gosen: They\'re not direct competitors and I think they would say the same thing. They\'re interested in more than videogames, therefore that does put us in a slightly different position. But as always, Nintendo is the one that sets its own agenda; we do what we think is right for our business and our consumers. At the end of the day, that\'s what drives us forward, not what other people do.

Well the only way I see a price meaning anything if sony drops down to $199. Then that secures them that gamers will likely choose ps2 over the other consoles.
