Sony announced today that they\'re planning to release upgraded DVD drivers for the PlayStation 2 in Japan. According to company representatives, while the on-screen interface is the same as with previous drivers, the quality and sound of the DVD playback has been vastly improved. Japanese PlayStation 2 owners can register through Sony\'s website to receive a CD featuring the upgraded drivers in the mail for only 350 yen. It\'s currently unknown whether Sony plans to offer the updated DVD drivers to console owners in America or Europe. For reference, Sony has previously offered upgraded PlayStation 2 DVD drivers through Japanese retailers to fix software bugs that allowed owners to playback movies encoded for other regions.

I\'m glad to see that Sony wants to keep its products updated with as little struggle pocket-wise. Score one for Sony.

Would be nice if they added the P-Scan thingy :)

I hope they do this here soon.
Also, they had better do it right. What\'s the point of a flashable area in the hardware if you aren\'t going to use it? I don\'t want to have to load these drivers every time I want to watch a movie, dammit (like with the current remote).

yeah thats cool

another problem is with some easter eggs you cant input 100+ digits which some easter eggs need......that is what that 10+ button does on "normal" remotes.....

I guess I do not understand you here. I have downloaded the current upgrade for the drivers onto my memory Card and have not had to do so again. What gives man? I have b playing movies ever since never having to download the drivers over and over.

it should save to your memory card

Ok, I just finished reading Sony\'s site about this, and it turns out that the 350 yen that Sony is asking for is simply for the cost of mailing the DVD drivers. The note specifically asks that people who wish to get the latest drivers mail 7 50yen stamps in an envelope to an address specified by Sony. I think I\'ll mail out my 350 yen tomorrow =)

I don\'t like to send money overseas so I think I\'ll just wait and see if the drivers arrive here.
-
I\'ve ordered the driver, and I\'ll post any impressions of it if there are any differences, and if I would even notice any differences..

I\'m pretty sure that the flashable area on the PS2 is not big enough for those new drivers. I do hope that future driver updates will be able to be stored on the harddrive though...

I would say they so, otherwise that\'s $200 wasted.

I figured out what was wrong.
But I\'m not telling... it\'s too irritatingly obvious....
