Microsoft Tried to Buy Nintendo
According to a new book called Opening the Xbox: Inside Microsoft\'s Plan to Unleash an Entertainment Revolution, Microsoft was at one point all set to plunk down 25 billion for the Japanese game giant. As the book describes, Nintendo\'s U.S. president Minoru Arakawa wasn\'t sure what to think when Microsoft made the offer. "I was surprised," Arakawa admitted. "We didn\'t need the money. I thought it was a joke."
Nontheless, Arakawa and Nintendo of America took the offer seriously and brought discussions to its corporate office in Japan. "Some Nintendo executives seemed interested and the meetings went on through the winter," the book describes. "The parties met six or seven times. Microsoft wanted Nintendo to drop its GameCube console and get behind the Xbox. But Hiroshi Yamauchi, the aging CEO and Nintendo, didn\'t like the idea. By January 2000, the talks were over."

I want some Xbox fans for an explination as to why MS would even in their right mind attempt at buying the big "N."

They don\'t need that to beat them:p
ps: relax jm,nobody can buy Nintendo! :) ...at least I hope:mad:

Yeah, I\'ve been reading about this. It kinda backs up the "MS wants the rights to Mario" rumor from months ago.
Hey, I wouldn\'t mind if MS bought Nintendo.. as long as they stayed as a totally silent partner. ;)
-
ugh..
cant blame them for trying..
i wonder if the book will sell any better than the console..

I hope you know this story could be fake. He has no real sources to back it up. If it were true and they had bought nintendo I think that would have been shocking.
-
This is more likely just a mix up in stories...It probably goes back to when MS was trying to buyout Sega. Supposedly all three companies approached Sega with the offer...
-
If Microsoft tries to buy out Nintendo, it\'s terrible.
But if Nintendo at least tries to buy out or hold partial ownership in Left Field, Factor 5, and Silicon Knights, it\'s perfectly fine.
I think any of these companies would buy out the whole industry, if they could afford it and if other companies were willing to sell.

Both writers and publishers worry big time about getting their ass sued. Unless it says fiction on the cover you can bet there are several reliable sources to back every event covered in a book of this nature.

everybody sing it with me , how low can you go, how low can you go.

Sued by who? On what grounds freedom of the press? This story is likely 100% false.

why so angry, quddus?
anyways, an author can be sued VERY easily for publishing fluff
look at the national enquierer magazine, they employ some of the highest paid lawyers in the US. know why? :)

I\'m not angry:bounce: :) :p and they could have sources there sources could be wrong. And a printing like this would have no need for a law suit. Unless it was some type of defirmation or something.
But hey if they did try and buy Nintendo can you blame them? Thats what all these huge corporations like to do own the market.

QuDDus should be MS\'s lawyer
Never a negative comment in QuDDus\'s house!

Perhaps they wanted to purchase a company with footing in this industry already, rather than take a completely risky and possibly not successful venture into the industry themselves.
-
Here is what I don\'t get. You all are whining and *****ing that MS tried to buy Nintendo, yet if Sony tried to buy Square or another well established company, it would be perfectly fine.
I guess that is double standards for you..
-
yer missing the point LIC
buying the competition is m$ proven method of business in the PC realm
its also what gave them thier stranglehold AND put them in anti-trust court

Plus, Squaresoft and Sony work side by side, have a good relationship with each other. Squaresoft was responsible for making a killer Final Fantasy series on the PlayStation (1 and 2). If Sony were to aquire them, I\'d be nothing different than Nintendo and Rareware, or something like that.
