Title: Baseball fans showing up to games less and less every year!!!

Average attendance 4.9 percent below 2001

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Baseball\'s attendance drop accelerated during the fourth week of the season, leaving the sport\'s average 4.9 percent below last year.

The 30 major league teams averaged 26,338 through the first 361 dates of the season, down from 27,701 through a similar period last year. After three weeks, attendance was down 3.4 percent.

Nineteen teams have experienced declines, led by Pittsburgh (down 133,185), Texas (124,630), Milwaukee (82,535), Cleveland (81,811), Florida (70,802), Cincinnati (62,247), Colorado (54,468), Kansas City (49,849) and Montreal (43,284).

The teams with the largest increases are Arizona (63,594), Minnesota (50,007), Seattle (49,674) and the Chicago Cubs (42,855).

But look at the teams that have had the largest dropoffs all suck ass, and montreal is just a lost cause, also the cubs have put those screens up to blind the people from those buildings behind the stadium, there fore a increase in fans goin to there games

When will Bud Selig realize that threatening to take away some of baseball\'s best teams won\'t help the sport?  Of course people will be turned off to it if he keeps acting the way he has.

Anyway, some of these drop offs are logical.  Pittsburgh, for example, had a new stadium last year.  They probably had higher attendance to begin the season last year, because people wanted to see the new stadium.  That extra boost isn\'t there this year.

Cleveland cut their pay roll dramatically during the offseason.  Sure they are still winning, but in a city that\'s used to tons of runs being scored, 2-1 victories aren\'t as exciting.

Other teams, such as Texas and Colorado are just off to horrible starts this year.  No one wants to see a loser.

Notice the increases.  They were all in teams that have a legitimate shot at the playoffs this year.  Arizona didn\'t know their team would be this good at the beginning of last year.  Now they\'re supporting their defending champions.  Minnesota has a good team, where as at the beginning of last year they didn\'t think they would, and they are trying to show they shouldn\'t be contracted.

Am I the only one, by the way, that thinks it\'s interesting that the Minnesota Twins attendance is up, while Milwaukee\'s is way down?  Take that team commish!

Baseball fans showing up less and less?  Actually the baseball fans are showing up the same, there are just less of them out there.

Dang, why do I have to be so literal?

I like my tv.

Going to games I always get sunburned, or it rains, or something.  It\'s safer and cheaper to watch at home.

shock...The Cubs have absolutely no chance in making the playoffs.  And about Pittsburgh "sucking ass" well they don\'t they are in either 1st or 2nd place right now.  The other teams Im not surprised at though, Minnesota doesn\'t want their team to leave so they go to see them more often now and the Expos have like 4 real fans.

Most of the teams with large drop offs aren\'t bad teams so far.  They are teams though that started the season not expecting to ever be in playoff contention.

And as for the Cubs, they were damn close last year, and they got better.  Sure they\'re doing bad now, but everyone is injured.  They do have a shot, just as much of one as the Twins do.

Right now on ESPN Classic they are playing Kerry Wood\'s 20 strike out game.

GOOD LORD I forgot how good he was that day...

To this day that game is one of my greatest sports moments.

p.s. the Cubs SUCK!

I\'ve done my part this season by going to one of the games of my local team(Baltimore Orioles). The attendance that day was around 33k I believe. They were playing the Red Sox. I\'ll probably go to at least one more game this season to show some support.

Baseball fans dont want to show up to games because they have no intrest in the game any more.  The games get boring fast.  The people want action. Why would I want to spend money to watch game if I can see the highlights of the game on SportsCenter.

Actually deadpool, I think you\'re about as wrong as you could possibly be.  First of all, if they have no interest in the games, wouldn\'t they not be baseball fans?  There are hundreds of thousands of people at baseball games on any given day for the entire summer.  Don\'t you think that says something?

Attendence wouldn\'t be such a problem if they didn\'t overexpand to places like Tampa, which never should have had a team to begin with, and if they put a salary cap on the sport so owners don\'t have to pay players so much.

Anyway, deadpool, any true baseball fan would rather go to a game than see highlights on sportscenter.

Your probaly right shockwaves.  I guess when I said people are not intrested I was really talking about myself.  I think the games are boring.  Oh, Iam not a true baseball fan and never will be, the highlights are way better than the game.

Attendance is probably down because before the season even started, you could pretty much eliminate half the teams from contention. Why bother spending $40 per person for a game that will eventually mean nothing?

Who actually thought these teams were gonna compete for a playoff spot?

D-Rays
Cubs
Orioles
Rangers
Rockies
Royals
Tigers
Brewers
Phillies

I thought the Cubs could challenge for the entire NL...

look at thier lineup.

if mcgriff and alou hit like they SHOULD... the cubs would have a kick ass lineup. look at the 1 through 5.

corey paterson (really coming into his own)
bill mueller (coming back from injury soon)
sammy sosa (need i say anything?)
fred mcgriff (30hr\'s and 100+ rbi\'s every year)
mioses alou (300 lifetime average and 20-30 hr\'s a year)

theres no doubt the cubs starting pitching is as good as anyone in the division, while the bullpen has struggled, they should get back on track.

alot of beaseball people thought the cubs would be in the playoffs this year. its not looking to good now though.

Yeah, I did expect the Cubs to challenge for a playoff spot.  I don\'t know why you put them on that list.  They were damn close to one last year, and they got better during the off season.

Apparently St. Louis is stepping it up a notch to try and get people into the seats.

It\'s like I\'ve been saying this whole time.  The Cubs got off to a slow start, but that means nothing.  Oakland was off to a slow start last year, and they had the second best record in the AL.  The Cubs still have as good a shot at making the playoffs as anyone in the NL.

Well baseball ratings have been piss poor sucky the past years. The world series last year tried to revive the game a little.

I think there are two many foreign ppl in baseball and it\'s not a all american sport anymore so most of the red necks and racist are not watching and attended as many games anymore.

Baseball is sad because losers like Ken Griffey Jr. ask for millions of dollars just so they can be pussies and get hurt every other day.
