April 29, 2002 - Since the two or three of you who have not heard quite yet might be interested, a European PlayStation magazine has dropped an interesting hint indicating that longtime Nintendo developer Rare may have a PlayStation 2 game in development.
Rare\'s future plans have of course been the subject of much debate in recent months, since its current contract with Nintendo is up for renewal and potential renegotiation this year. The latest bit of grist for the mill came from Future Publishing\'s PSM2.
The magazine, in its most recent E3 preview column, made mention of "what Rare -- the makers of Perfect Dark -- have planned for Sony\'s console." An interesting comment, but as yet a thoroughly unsubstantiatable one, since anybody actually in the know on the subject isn\'t saying word one at this point.
We will of course endeavor to figure out what direction Rare is taking in the future, so look forward to more news on the subject as E3 approaches.

Unless they\'ve been hiding it for quite some time you shouldn\'t expect anything before late 2003 or 2004.
Rare are perfectionist...them being new to working on PS2 (difficult hardware) and having quite a bit in the lineup for GC would more than likely leave their hands tied.
I\'ll be waiting for something official...

In an interview released today, Nintendo\'s Perrin Kaplan doesn\'t rule out Rareware working with other hardware.. but she states that Rareware\'s relationship with Nintendo has not changed. This means that Nintendo doesn\'t know anything.
Add this to the fact that they own a major part of Rareware (25%, 50%.. no difference) and there you have it, folks! Rareware hasn\'t said anything about moving away from Nintendo Land. Why do I think so? If Rare was going to be developing for other platforms, their shareholders would certainly know. Unless Nintendo\'s been lying over the past few months.. nothing has happened.
This is yet another BS Rareware rumor.. started by a PlayStation magazine. Wouldn\'t a Nintendo magazine be reporting major developments like this? Err, yeah.. *thinks that the editor of PSM2 is feeding off of \'net rumors*
-
This would be a kick in the guts for Nintendo, thats for sure.

You basically answered your own post: the chance that Rare might be working on other hardware is there... as quoted by Perrin Kaplan.

I don\'t see what the big deal is. Rare is Nintnedo Square. Square is Sony\'s Rare. Both companies own a sizable chunck of stock in their respective developers. And if the rumors are true, both developers will make games for other consoles.. although still support their stockholding company first and foremost.
The only company that isn\'t getting a bit of love spread on them, it seems, is Microsoft.
-
I agree with SonyFan. And even if Rare makes games for other consoles - that would be far from bad to both Nintendo and Rare. Because, sales on other systems equals more money. The only thing that could hurt Nintendo are potential buyers slipping off to PS2 thinking that they can get Rare games on that system aswell, although I doubt that Nintendo will let that happen (seeing that they own a big amount of Rare).

Did you read the interview, Seven?
She didn\'t confirm or deny anything.. she simply stated that Rare\'s relationship with Nintendo hadn\'t changed, and that Rare enjoys working on the GCN/GBA. Let\'s just say she didn\'t flat-out deny the possibility.. but didn\'t hint towards it.

Yes, I read it - and it\'s pretty clear what she said wasn\'t it? She doesn\'t rule out the possibility of Rare working on other hardware. That\'s all I said. Now, the relationship might have not changed, but
[list=1]
- We don\'t know the internal ongoings between the two.
- this is speculation
- this is said by a Nintendo spokesperson, I wouldn\'t have expected to hear anything different.
So if Nintendo really doesn\'t know what Rare is up to, I wonder how good their relationship really is. It could also just be that Nintendo knows something, but doesn\'t want to go public with it just yet.
Now IMO, I am sure the relationship between Nintendo and Rare is fine, but that both could benefit by porting some games to other platforms. Something like the Square Nintendo deal so to speak. Since Rare is owned by Nintendo big deal anyway (just like Square Sony) this might be quite likely.
Cheer up Blade, even if Rare was to port some games, I doubt it would hurt Nintendo in anyway. ;)
-
Pffftttttttttt
its just E3 vaporware talk.
-
Hehe, no need to cheer up.. I\'m just trying to squash these rumors.. ;)
Ever since that "MS buying Rare" rumor started, all sorts of crap\'s been thrown around.
Some of it not even involving Rare!
-
yeah I know what you mean. I somehow doubt it aswell... how much does Nintendo own Rare anyway? Wasn\'t it like almost 49%, or am I mixing up something..?!
-
25% initially (early 1995) but many say that the stake has increased.
If Nintendo owns more than 35% of Rareware.. and considering that they\'re easily Nintendo\'s most powerful 2nd-party (also the most successful 2nd-party in the world) I don\'t see why Nintendo would sell their shares in Rare to Microsoft. MS would have to give Nintendo a major amount of cash (or a few of their own developers) to make Nintendo give Rareware up.. and I doubt that MS is looking to let Bungie go. (MS\'s own "Rareware")
-
If the "relationship is the same" then there are no PS2 games in the works.
If the "relationship" has changed, there still wouldn\'t be a PS2 game in the works.
Nintendo owns a lot of Rare, sure. But they\'ve also practically co-developed half the stuff out of Rare in recent years. Nintendo has also been Rare\'s biggest publisher. They\'ve also helped promote their stuff in a major way. They also have permission to use Nintendo franchises like Donkey Kong and Star Fox.
For all intents and purposes, they\'re part of the same company. A PS2 game isn\'t gonna happen.

Thankyou IGN for another bogus rumor. Add it to the list of Factor 5 making a third person Metroid, NST making a non celshaded Zelda, and numerous rumors that of supposed launch titles (Perfect Dark 0 anyone?).
I\'ll believe it when I see an official Rare confirmation. Until then I\'ll be playing my beta version of StarFox for the PS2 which I recieved from an confidential "inside source."
