Title: PS2 Broadband question...
Post by: BeerStud on May 08, 2002, 01:22:57 PM
I don\'t understand how this service will work.  I can get broadband in my area from Comcast.  Does that mean that I will only be able to get BB from comcast, or will Sony be able to supply it for me since I assume the infrastructure is here if Comcast can do it.  I cant imagine paying $50 per-month, plus the individual cost of the game to purchase, and then its own monthly cost to play also.  That will be a lot of money, which will almost just make me use the dial-up and not be able to play Socom.

Any Ideas?

You can use your own internet service to play any PS2 game online. It dosen\'t matter who you go through.. you\'re still connecting to the same servers. Sega only had Seganet to reduce lag because it connected directly to the server and didn\'t have to ping offa most of the computers in the free world to get to where it was going.

Not that you\'re going to have to worry much about that anyhow since you have broadband.

Dunno if Sony is going to charge a monthy fee for using their servers.. but I wouldn\'t be surprised if they did. It\'ll be low.. like 5-10 a month. Plus you have to pay for certain online games like Final Fantasy XI. For most stuff like fps, racers, fighters, ect.. you\'ll probably just have to pay one base fee to access all of them. FFXI is a MMORPG and needs constant updating, patching, maintinence, and such.. that\'s why it\'s going to cost extra.

So instead of paying $50 a month for Comcast, I can pay $5-$10 a month for Sony\'s service?

I wish there would be away to connect that service to my computer, so I could surf the net with it.

No no BeerStud!!!

The Sony fee ($10 or whatever) is strictly for acces to their game server. You will still need your isp to connect to the internet!!

o, ok.  Damn, thats wut I thought originally, I just wasn\'t sure.
Jeez well, i guess I won\'t be experiencing BB for a while.  A $100 per month gaming experience is too much for my pockets.

My 56k is $10 per month.

Unrelated to the BB...

Anyone know anything about the HDD? I heard that it might not come out in the US at all now.

I hope it does come out, FFXI needs the HDD, I think Square would be pretty pissed if they couldn\'t release it here.

I don\'t think that\'s what SonyFan meant.  It will be another $5-$10 on top of what you pay your ISP.  I don\'t think it\'s been decided whether Sony will run their servers for free or charge for their use.  Regardless, you will pay your ISP a fee for your connection; that\'s a separate issue.

Broadband isn\'t cheap.  Over here its 49.99, but if you provide your own cable modem its only 35.99.  Still its a bit pricey

Word on the street on the HDD.................

Well, Sony may not even MAKE a PS2 HDD... Get this.
The BBA has standard connections for accepting ANY HD, so Sony may just provide the software (disc) for proper formatting and the User can/will purchase ANY HD of their choosing.

Hmmm........

So if you want a 20 Gig, or 120Gig it\'s entirely up to you:)
