Title: to the victor goes the spoils....
Post by: mm on May 09, 2002, 04:32:05 PM
the xbox price is confirmed

http://www.gamespydaily.com/news/fullstory.asp?id=3403

wow, m$ is gonna lose even MORE money while sony still makes a small profit on each unit sold at $199

im curious to see if more PS2\'s are sold at 199$ or if more xbox\'s are sold at the same price.

if sony REALLY wants to drive the nail in the coffin, they\'de drop the price to 149$  take a small hit with every console sold, but TOTALLY kill any xbox sales

hmmmmmmmmm...

Microsoft is really being agressive.  Price drops helped in europe so I guess they could work here too.  They needed to do something because Nintendo was beating them with virtually nothing to speak of.

You have to wonder, though, how much is this going to hurt them money wise?  I don\'t care how many billions they have, this is going to put a large dent in their earnings.

The date of release for that ad is said to be May 26 which is right after E3 so expect official word there.  Also expect price drop from Sony.  Nintendo may wait until the second half of the year to drop the price.

Things just got a whole lot more interesting.

Microsoft makes a ridiculous amount of money every year. This will take a hit on their earnings, but if anyone can survive such a hit, it\'s undoubtedly them.

Soon enough I\'ll be able to get my xbox finally.  I decided a while back 300$ wasn\'t worth it for the xbox.

I thought Sony has come out and said they will NOT be dropping the price of the PS2.

Yeah, they said that the NGC has been $200 since launch and even the Xbox at $300 was outselling it.  Also, the PS2 was completely dominating them both.  They don\'t see how the Xbox dropping its price will affect them in any way -- and I agree with their stance.  Once the Xbox and NGC actually start selling as much as the PS2 is every week (meaning once the gap between the userbases starts to decrease instead of increasing), that is when Sony should consider a price drop.  But until then, IMO they should take the wait-and-see approach.  Will we see a PS2 price drop at E3?  Many say yes, many say no.  Only a dozen days until we know for sure. :)

I think it\'s awesome. If this price drop goes down like people are speculating, I can pick up just about all three consoles in one paycheck. :D Then a ton of games with the next week\'s paycheck.

Too bad I won\'t have time to play any of em. : (

I really do want this move to spurn Sony into dropping the price of the PS2. I\'ve always stuck by my guns of NOT gettin a console until at least one year and/or a $100 dollar price drop. Well... I may just end up getting an Xbox before I get my PS2. : (

NAAAWWW... Too many good games on the PS2 to pass it up. I\'ll get Xbox and GameCube later.. but I will have them. :D

Maybe M$ will reward you as they did UK customers... with a bonus for those who paid 300 at the start.  I doubt it tho.

Personally, I disagree with sony\'s current standpoint (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/358/358880p1.html) of not lowering the price.  I think that they should care whether or not xbox and GC do really well.  Don\'t get me wrong, I want neither to fail, but from Sony\'s standpoint you would think they would want to keep em down.

They might want to slow the competition down, but they also want to keep their business doing well and if they can pull in an extra $50-$100 on each console and still sell-through the number that they do, why change... wait til that plan starts to go bad and then switch.

199.99 should sell a lot more xboxes now. I wonder if Nintendo willd drop gamecube down to 99$ I sure would go out and buy one at that price:D

Sony is showing some big brass ones by not jumping in right away with their own price cut. I love the line "We have never dropped our prices because of market desperation" Way to stick it to \'em

Two other things:

PS2 is still worth every penny

A bunch of good PS2 games were reduced to $20 recently, not including all the bargin PSone AAA titles. May not mean much to most of you cutting edge gamers but it will greatly help sway the balance until Sony does decide to drop the price of their console.

Quddus, if Nintendo decides to lower the price of the Gamecube, it is expected to not happen until the holiday season, and it is expected that the new price would be $149...

didnt Sony find a way to make the chips smaller? I believe I saw a post on that somewhere......so they might not take the hit you think and with the BBA and HDD coming out soon you would be paying around 300 bucks with the PS2/BBA (45-50 bucks for the BBA) and HDD (probaly around the 50 dollar mark)....Just a guess......

My thread about just that ;) (http://www.psx2central.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20551)

Back in early April, Sony announed that they had reduced costs of production by a fair amount, but the price drop would occur later...  It\'s been a month now, and still no price drop, but your idea seems to be as good as any as to why they wouldn\'t drop the price (and continue to trounce the competition).

Actaully I meant they would drop the price  about 100 bucks to compensate for the BBA and the HDD.  My BBA is already Pre-ordered along with Tekken 4.
