Title: FFXI hits shelves in less than a week!
Post by: FatalXception on May 10, 2002, 08:17:21 PM
In Japan.

A link to an article here (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/359/359081p1.html)

The gist of it is this.  Developing and setting up FFXI took them 16-25 million dollars (yowza :)), and they won\'t actually know if it\'s a success or failure for a few years, when they find out just how many long term subscribers there are.  There is still a PC version planned, but it\'s taking a backseat to the PS2\'s version, which is their #1 priority.  The american version will be out... later, but we\'ll see some details at E3.

I sure wish I:
1) Had a Japanese PS2
2) Read/wrote Japanese perfectly
3) Had infinite longdistance time to connect to FFXI (or if I could just use my existing BB)

All of those things can be baught... but what I really need is enough time to actually play mmorpg.

Good point.. and if all of us in USA and Europe wish really hard and are pure of heart... Than Sony will put one under our pillows.

They are sure taking there time aren\'t they.  Reminds me of when the Dual Shock analog took a year too long to come out.  But they made it work... so I guess we\'ll see.

I\'ve been waiting for this game for so  long...

Famitsu Weekly: 38/40

Not just a new release in the series, but an expansion into a whole new dimension. Going far beyond the flexibility of other network games, a huge range of rich contents lies right at the player\'s feet. The gameplay is only limited by your imagination, and through interaction with other players the flavor and value of the gaming experience will change. Amazing. This is a first for me.

The fact that the battle system is not "action style" is novel for this kind of game, but this does lead to a little frustration. That said, the vast landscape and the huge variety of independant-thinking monsters that inhabit it are enough to justify playing this game, and through completing quests and chatting with other players in the game, a whole new level of playability emerges.

Reviewer: "Kisuko" Okumura  Score: 10
You can look forward to adventure on a huge scale, and an extremely high level of freedom. This game is so full of elements that stimulate the minds of the those who like to explore new places and collect interesting items, that you\'ll wonder whether you\'ll be ever be able to experience everything. Of course ultimately the gameplay depends on the other players around you, and the setup fees are costly to say the least. But no matter what, this is one game I don\'t want to miss!

Reviewer: Takayuki Haneda  Score: 9
If you have to change your system to play this the initial layout may be expensive, but there\'s no doubt that this is the first of a new and exciting breed of consumer games. Even veterans of other online games will be surprised at the freshness of FFXI. This is not just a scaled down version of society, order in the game will be carefully maintened, making for a smooth gaming experience. The more players the merrier!

Total: 38/40 (Platinum)

That\'s the main reveiw translation I found at ffozone\'s forums... here\'s some more on the picks of the week they have in the magazine, it\'s all FFXI.

Reviewer: "Kaeru" Omiya
My pick is of course FFXI, with 10 points. You can interpret this 10 not just as one more than 9, but as "full marks". Setting up the system may be a hassle, but believe me it\'s worth it. This experience is a first in consumer gaming. The kind of game that you never ends...

Reviewer: "Kisshii" Arashiyama
If you can get the necessary system setup without any problems, then FFXI is an awesome game. Added to the playability of the series up until now, being able to adventure and interact with other players creates a festival-like atmosphere. I only worry about manners...

Reviewer: "Kisuko" Okumura
My pick of the week goes without saying, Final Fantasy XI. It is a very different game to the rest of the series, but although FF games develop and mutate, with new systems and styles, the finished product never fails to excite. I\'ll see you in Vana\'diel.

Reviewer: Takayuki Haneda
While there are many conditions that you need to fulfil in order to play FFXI, I don\'t think this is a game that anyone should miss. Of course some may want to wait and see how popular FFXI becomes, but if you\'re gonna play I suggest you get to it right away!

damn, first I thought this thread was on FFX (yeah, I\'m tired) on its PAL release until I noticed that this is abotu FFXI. Pretty awesome.. I thought it would release like at the end of this year. Anyway, how does this game compare to FFX graphically? Not that I\'m a graphics whore, but I\'m just curious because it\'s a multiplayer game and the graphics didn\'t seem too impressive when the first screens were released..
