Title: Car question
Post by: theomen on May 11, 2002, 08:03:59 PM
I\'m looking at a used turbo car, and I can get extremely cheap due to a family member being a car dealer.  It has low miles, and according to him is surprisingly quick, but there is one problem, when you floor it the car does nothing, he says it\'s like the car isn\'t getting any gas.  I want to know if anyone knows the problem.

I think it could be a disconected vacuume hose to the wastegate, causing the turbo to boost to high and the computer cut\'s the fuel.

any idea\'s?

Yeah, you have to be careful with modded cars. Alot of them don\'t have the original engines, parts etc in them, so you really need to know the history of the car before you consider purchaseing it.

Sounds like a problem to do with the turbo itself to me, its not getting enough gas so its just \'flat\'

If you try it too hard it could explode (this happened to a freind of mine).

Be careful.

it can be many a probs..fuel..vaccum, or the ecu itself(unlikely). Wastegate could be stuck open...does it have an external gate or internal? does it have a boost gauge?, if so..check the readings and post whats happens.

I personally welded my internal wastgate shut and got an external one for that reason.

well the mechanic who inspected the car for the dealership checked the trubo charger, and said their\'s nothing wrong with it, and he replaced the fuel filter.  He says it could be a fuel pump, but I don\'t think that\'s what it is.  Because as long as you don\'t womp on the gas it\'ll pull, so if you want to go fast you gotta ease into it.

I just kinda want to know what kind of project I have in store for me, because just to look at the car I gotta drive 150+ miles.  So I\'m trying to diagnose this by word of mouth.

btw, I think the waste gate is cool because you can get on it enough to get the turbo a go\'n, but when you completly floor it, it shuts down.  Which makes me think vacuum hose to the wastegate assembly.  because if the wastegate is not opening, the turbo will overboost, the the computer will cut the fuel. and as the RPM decreases, the boost lowers and the fuel comes back on.

but I could be wrong, and it could be the wastegate, I\'m pretty new to turbo engines, I\'ve always drove N/A cars.

I havent touched any turbo cars, so I don\'t know too much about them, but here\'s my input as to your question.

I\'ve faced similar problems in the past, where you could tap the peddle, and the car will go, but when you floor it, and open the throttle body, the car didnt pull as hard.  The problem for me was simply the timing belt.  And then another time, a similar thing happened, and this time it was the distributor.  So basically, it could be many different things... including the injectors...  hmmm... I wasnt too helpful here, was I?  sorry =P

it\'s a Dodge Shelby CTX, an old car but still has low miles, and will be a fun project.

well I think I\'m gonna pick up the car Wendsday, and I should have about 300-400 bucks left after the price of the car, for mods.  I\'m thinking a boost controller for $45 shipped, a dynomax super turbo muffler, or flowmaster (I\'ve talked to owners of this car and they swear by the Dynomax)  And then I\'ll grab a larger T-Body, and port the mouth.  And finally I\'ll build an AEM style cold air induction.

I saw your question on the site.  There are a lot of good people there so you should get your question answered pretty quickly.  You ought to give as much detail as you can.

I had a problem similar to this one on one of my cars a while back. It may not be the same reasons but the throtle position sensor was bad. When I would drive it under normal circumstances it was ok, but as soon as I hit the gas it would hesitate and sputter. Simple fix, it took me about 1 hour and 85 bucks later it ran just fine.

ok got the car but now am at a loss...

When the car is reved to around 3700rpm the engine will chug, almost like how a car does when it reaches a rev limit.

however if in nuetral you can rev all you want.

I checked the engine out and found a loose vacuum hose, I conected it, and I can now rev to 4500-4800 rpm before chugging.  I haven\'t checked the hoses with carb cleaner yet, but am wondering if anyone else has an idea as to what the prob is.

BTW the boost gauge reads that I\'m reaching about 4-7psi before chugging, but I haven\'t read the boost gauge since I connected the hose though.

and by chug I mean all power cuts out, comes back on cut\'s out, back on, like the fuel is cut off.  This happens very quickly and makes me look like I\'m driving a car with a manual tranny, badly.

**edit** just checked the PSI and it\'s hitting at 15psi, which is pegging the boost gauge, I\'m thinking there is a leak before the wastegate causing overboost, and the computer is shutting down the fuel.  and thoughts?  I NEED HELP!
