REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 2002--Less than one year after successfully launching NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM) at a mass-market price, Nintendo of America Inc. is dropping the MSRP to $149.95, effective Tuesday, May 21, 2002.
To date, Nintendo has shipped more than 4.5 million systems worldwide and its hit title, Super Smash Bros.(TM) Melee, has topped the 2.5 million mark.
Today\'s announcement comes as the $27 billion interactive entertainment industry gathers in Los Angeles for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) to preview the latest and greatest games coming out this holiday.
"It\'s simple, really: Nintendo is committed to offering our players the best games and the best price," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "We were the first manufacturer to reach the $199 price level and now we\'re leading the industry to $149 -- allowing even more players around the world to get their hands on our legendary favorites like Mario, Zelda, Star Fox and Metroid this year."
Nintendo\'s four headliners arrive in brand new adventures, exclusively on NINTENDO GAMECUBE:
-- In Super Mario Sunshine(TM), the world\'s most beloved plumber arrives for a tropical vacation...only to discover that his good name has been soiled by adversaries -- and it\'s his job to clean up the mess.
-- The elfin hero Link sports a brand-new look that perfectly reflects his emotions throughout The Legend of Zelda(TM), as he embarks on an epic quest across land and sea to rescue his sister.
-- With Star Fox(R) Adventures, Nintendo and Rare Ltd. create one of the most technologically advanced video games in history, with a compelling and whimsical story line that parallels a feature film.
-- Fans around the world finally get the chance to find out what it looks like to meet Space Pirates face-to-face as Metroid(R) Prime gains first-person perspective.
In total, Nintendo and third party partners will expand game portfolios by year-end to more than 300 for Game Boy Advance and more than 150 for NINTENDO GAMECUBE. While retaining its unrivaled appeal to players of all ages, Nintendo is also aggressively moving forward with games designed to appeal to a broader audience with exclusives such as Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness: Sanity\'s Requiem(TM), and Resident Evil Zero.
As the worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co. Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home video game systems. The systems include Game Boy(R), Nintendo(R) 64, Game Boy Advance and NINTENDO GAMECUBE. Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.4 billion video games worldwide, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario(TM) and Donkey Kong(R) and launching such franchises as Zelda(TM) and Pokemon(R). As a wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo\'s operations in the Western Hemisphere.

Holy SH%t this is what I have been waiting for :bounce:
$149!!!!!! $149!!!!!!!:bounce:
-
so zelda goes to 2003, *yawn*
i see this as bad
the companies are fighting with price, not titles
how much money is m$ and nintendo willing to lose with price drops only 6 months after release?
things are a changing in the console realm
and i dont like it
-
Mmm.. not bad. Question is.. which do I get first? PS2 or Gamecube? Gettin Xbox too.. but at $150 and with just as many titles that interest me.. I think I\'ll have to choose them over MS. Not to mention that the new version of PSO (v.3) is going to be out on it with 56k support and offline multiplayer.. which should be a real bonus when taking it over my bud\'s houses.
Still wish they\'d just sh*t or get off the pot and make a real PSO 2 (Not v.2) or PSV. Sega\'s gonna starting to turn into Eidos if they keep this crap up.
-
Time for me to get a GC
-
GC = $149
Resident Evil = $50
Memory card = $28
PS2 converter = $10 You\'ll need it for RE.
Total $237 plus tax
Only $38 more than the PS2 and Xbox.
-
10$ for the converter?
i paid over 20$ after shipping for my joybox converter
oh well, it was well worth what i paid to use my dual shock for GC games

Online, it\'s $10 plus $5 shipping. I couldn\'t wait so i went to a local video game import store near me and bought theirs for $19.99. So don\'t feel so bad. :p

TRY IT OUT FIRST! I thought I\'d never try it until I saw my girlfriend playing Pikmin. I tried it and it\'s actually a pretty nifty strategy game. Don\'t let the cuteness fool you. This game, at its core, is about despotism, dictatorship, slavery, conquest and murder.
Ask mm.
Seriously. It\'s a cute way of hiding that stuff. Miyamoto should have been a propogandist. :p
-
I\'ve been waiting for a good reason to by GC and now I have one.
Ace
-
yeah, i take out my days anxiety on the pikmin
i throw the little bastids right in the water, drown them, grow some more, repeat
-
150 dollars sounds a little low for a super high tech next-gen console...
-
Funny how when Xbox dropped its\' price everyone yelled "doomed!"
Nintendo drops its\' price and everyone thinks it was a good move...
I hate you all;)
-
In a year+ when PS2 price drops again what are they going to do go down to $99?
-
Not everyone.
You gotta love competition. If your your normal that is. ;)

So what if they do. That\'s the way it goes when you have to compete.

See, short sighted...

Are you directing that at me?

Sony controles the prices of its consoles as well as the others. Point made.
Microsoft already was losing money with every x box sold and now Sony made them lose even more.
As for GC I dont know whats up with it how much it cost to make it I will have to look into it.
-
No, I was addressing Clowd...

Xbox dropped first...and as all consoles go, they all lose money on them in the beginning. They make up for it in software and eventually turn a profit on the hardware. It took Sony nearly 2 years to break even with PS2...
As competition goes, you do what you have to. IMO, the price drop won\'t effect Xbox until more games come out...

Announcing they will drop price is different from actually doing it.
Make it up in software sales? Last report I checked x box accounted for 1% of all software sales.

What\'s your point?

Again, what\'s your point? Software sales is where the money is...an immediate turn around (or in 8 months) is not realistic.
-
Damn, too soon IMO. Gamecube wasn\'t selling that poorly for a price drop. Must they always be less than the competition? Oh well, I still can\'t afford two systems, I can\'t see how some people do it... Maybe if I can get a used GC for like 99 bucks it may be an option but for now I just gotta stick with my PS2 which I have no problems with.
-
I really don\'t care about them lowering the price of the console. That\'s just a one time fee. I wish they would lower the price of the actual games a little :(

Sony just dropped prices of games to 39.99
-
yeah, sony is being relentless in crushing the competition

Well that doesn\'t help me! I own a Gamecube :(
I will be getting a PS2 soon though. So...yay!
-
I dunno about what my second console would be. I was pretty focused on PS2.. but Xbox is so much sexier now.
Why, do you ask? Ninja Gaiden.. exclusive. That\'s why!
Arguably my favorite 3rd-party NES franchise (only Castlevania and Mega Man contend) brought back to life.
-
doesnt mean its gonna be any good, ya know
dont be like me and buy a console for one game [oddworld]

When was this announced?!
-
Right here (http://www.xbox.com/e3-02/e3pressbriefingpr.htm?det=1)..
Tecmo is shafting the GameCube.. typical..
They deliver PS2 and Xbox games at launch and beyond.. GCN doesn\'t get an announcement..
-
I\'m glad to see developers stick to what they wanna do and not sheep around to Sony...and I\'m also glad Ninja Gaiden will be brought to its\' fullest on the most capable console;)
-
capable, ok
sell the least amount of copies, yes
ask oddworld that would have happened had they released munch\'s oddysee on PS2 instead of xbox
then ask the creaters of malice and wreckless and transworld surf
companies staying xbox only are severely restricting thier market

So should there be no exclusive games on xbox? Oh please:rolleyes:
Ninja gaiden is just another great game coming out on xbox.
-
It\'s just so unfair though!
Ninja Gaiden first appeared at home on a Nintendo system. My claim is.. I\'ve stuck with Nintendo for over 10 years just to get the latest Ninja Gaiden on my new Nintendo console! Tecmo, why have thou forsaken me?! Oh well.. if it\'s anything like Tecmo\'s other new game (a Beach Spikers ripoff featuring the DOA girls) I\'m not too disappointed..

It is a miracle there is any exclusive games on a system that sells that poorly. Looks like there is alot of people on MS\'s payroll... . .

Too late...
RE and GC...
-
Too soon. That is all I have to say. Nintendo was aleady level with Sony and MS and they have plenty of potenial sellers coming out this year, they didn\'t need to lower the price. MS did because of low sales and lack of killer first party games. Nintendo didn\'t....
I am with MM on this..I don\'t like all this price dropping.
:(
-
After seeing Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc.. I think they should have left it at $199.
It\'s becoming more and more evident that the GameCube is up there.. right next to the Xbox in power..
Once consumers see this, see games like Metroid Prime, and see the $149 price-tag.. Nintendo\'s going to be in a world of s**t trying to supply the demand. Metroid and Eternal Darkness aren\'t enough to woo mature gamers?
Well, Halo was enough to sell over 2 million Xbox systems worldwide.. GoldenEye was enough for N64..

That\'s funny. I recall hearing that last when Halo and Munch went to Xbox...
-
yeah, i wonder if halo would have had GTA3 sales it it was released on xbox
teehee, what if halo was released on PC and xbox last nov
take a gander at which would have more sales
i hope bungie was paid WELL
