E3 2002: EURO PS2 NETWORK ADAPTOR TO BE BUNDLED WITH NEW GAME!
The team responsible for Dropship is working on a brand new multiplayer project due to be packaged free with Sony\'s online add-on in Europe
20:18 With Sony of America "going large" on its online plans at this year\'s E3 in Los Angeles, Sony Europe has some extremely interesting details regarding its plans for online on this side of the Atlantic.
Team Soho, the studio responsible for PS2 shooter Dropship, is working on a multiplayer title named Hardware Network Technology, which sees players battling it out in tanks over the Internet.
Sony\'s wider plans for the title are as follows: "Hardware Network technology is designed to build an online network community with plans for downloads, community-based competitions and episodic content that can take into account the requests and requirements of the players to ensure maximum game play satisfaction."
These are the downloadable features SCEE plans to have available:
Extra multiplayer maps - Far more maps will be available to gamers, which will include new pickups and much more diverse environments
Extra vehicles and weapons – More vehicles and weapons which will increase the depth of the game. Gamers will be able to buy some optional texture sets and decals in order to individually customise their vehicles
Additional game types - Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch options will be available
Hardware website - Subscribers will get access to a dedicated web-site that will give players a focal point to get together and chat about the game, find out about the latest news and competitions, discuss new features and check the rankings and stats for all players within the community
Competitions and leagues - Subscribers will gain access to leagues or competitions some of which will offer big prizes to the winners. Their scores and overall ranking will be stored and they will be able to see how they compare against all the other players
Online community - gamers will be able to create clans or groups and begin to build an online community
SMS messaging - Although not part of the game itself, when gamers subscribe they will be given a unique I.D. with which they can log on to the Hardware website. When doing this they can choose to have any Hardware news about competitions, feature updates and rankings sent as SMS messages to their mobile phone.
The only sore point at present appears to be regarding the number of players that will be able to play online simultaneously. Senior execs within Sony Europe are reportedly insisting upon a 32-player title, but inside sources indicate that this is unrealistic with Hardware more likely to end up as 16-player.
There will be an offline single-player mode, but this will serve only to hone your skills before you enter the real competition online.
Although Sony Europe has yet to announce a price and release date for the network adaptor on this continent, we do know that Hardware will come bundled free with the add-on. And we also have the first explosive screens. More as it develops.
